Weld - working on another buddies car
A buddy of mine wanted a new motor... just something a little larger than what he had (his old motor was pretty... but lame)... and you know what happens then! It's a "while we're doing "X" can we also do "X and X and X"? Sure... why not... WTF... Got nothing else better to do!
This is one of those -- hate to but love to projects.... I hate it because the car is absolutely flawless.... and it's black and flawless... and did I mention it's flawless? Doing a motor swap over the fenders of a flawless black paint job isn't the right thing to do so I talked him into letting me pull the whole front end off.... and then it starts.... Brake lines.... wiring.... change this -- add that. :hitaxeonthehead: The new motor is a 496" BBC with Brodix heads... just what every 75 year old guy needs right?!?!?!?! So here's a quick self explanatory picture show.... http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...%2056/file.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...056/file-1.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...056/file-2.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-13.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-27.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-15.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-16.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-19.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-20.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-10.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...056/file-9.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-12.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...056/file-8.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...056/file-7.jpg |
Looking good so far! Are you leaving the block that color?
|
A guy has to be CAREFUL around paint like this!! OMG....
http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...56/file-24.jpg YES --- I ONLY have buddies with 8 stacks.... no 8 stacks -- we no friends! LOL http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...tordone006.jpg http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...tordone001.jpg |
Awesome Greg!!!!!!.Nothing's sweeter than a great Black paint job.And when it's black paint on a Tri5 well that's just it.I love the 210 sedan's.Big Block's and Tri5's just fit.

Yeah --- same color the old one was -- he likes the contrasting RED.... And actually --- it looks pretty good in that all black cavern. |

I agree! These cars almost need a BBC just to fill the compartment.... This black is like OMG perfect though ---- so you know what it's like working around it. It's protect -- protect -- protect.... Like a lot of these cars --- it was done awhile ago.... before big brakes -- before 3/16" polished stainless lines -- before we hid everything.... so that's what it's getting now... just a clean up in isle 5. |
|
|
I only hang out with short fat little dudes with tri fives.....
The owner is to my right - left if you're looking at the picture.... http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...stgroup003.jpg |
Yes --- we'll be getting rid of weird plumbing crap like this.....

Wow, that car is clean. Super clean. I see what you mean Greg.
That should be a great sleeper when done! |

Do it now while its out. Just my .02cents so the project takes longer. |
GW - My hats off to ya! Not many people in your position have the talent or the cahonies to tackle a job of this caliber.
You talk the talk and walk the walk buddy. :hail: |

Just kidding Greg......sorry man I couldn't help it. Have to admit though you kind of set yourself up for that one. That Tri-5 is a beauty  |
If you finish that car before I'm done, you and me are going to have issues!!!:stirthepot: Seriously, those are good things you do Greg.

It's really just a nip and a tuck.... |
Greg,
Great thread, thanks for posting. Finally seeing a Tri-5 like that, I physically feel better. http://www.domrep.ch/images/smilies/tv_happy.gif |

Just for you buddy.... It really is a beauty! He spent 10 years building it --- in a two car garage --- and everything was done by him except the upholstery and paint -- and it was painted in his garage.... He is super meticulous.... the fit and finish is spectacular... and get this -- first car he ever did! |

Great story...wow! Never would have thought that's how that amazing '56 was built. |
Wow what a beautiful car, the black is so nice, so freaking nice!
Nice garage build Greg and what cool deal for you to give him a hand in freshening it up for him! |

Thanks Rick.... I only posted it up because the Skeepers (screen name -- Compost Mints - or something like that) asked me to. Actually - I'm certain most of the guys here don't think I've ever even seen a car let alone take the time to work on 'em. :D |

I'm just the wrench.... It's not my car... so I don't call any of the shots. I've pushed pretty hard to get him to do some of the things over that needed some "modernizing". It's tough to tell a guy with a beautiful car - that he built - "er... um... dude... ya think that really looks good?" "How 'bout we rip that all out and start over." I usually just start that conversation the Greg Weld way --- "WTF were you thinking -- oh wait -- no -- you probably weren't were ya." You really can't see the heads and they are polished on the ends. |
You're a brave man, Mr. weld. I have a truck with a paint job just like that car. It's won everything ISCA can throw at it, and I'm afraid to even look at it, much less do something like your doing. I've put four miles on my truck, since I built it, in 1996!
That is a beautiful tri-five for sure! Absolutely beautiful! |

Thanks FOC'er (Friend of Charley) |

Very nice G. Got to love the tris.

Scott -- Gotta tell ya -- Everything we do takes an extra 30 minutes of prep. I just really don't want to be "that guy" that dropped a wrench down the side of the car. Pierre didn't even want to take the front end off! I said I wouldn't work on it if we didn't because there's no way I'm leaning over them to do the kind of work that we discussed.... bending new brake lines -- moving a few things around... fixing some leaks... changing most all of the wiring in front of the firewall... You just have to take the time to protect stuff BEFORE you drop the wrench because we will drop the wrenches! There's very little milage put on this car -- for exactly the reasons you site. Thus his new "project" is the baby blue '57 he bought from Rodger (Ironworks)... it's going to be his "driver". I keep telling him that once he drives that 525hp LS motor - on an Ironworks chassis.... "you'll never drive that black car again". http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...057/file-1.jpg |
Man you're living!
 Pimpin out a new rig and helping a friend wrench on such a great looking car, good times! How much of a "project" is the 57? Just little details or blow it apart and fix all the stuff from the last shop?? :lmao: If we don't connect before you split, honk as you pass exit 4. Dan |
Greg, I see what you mean with that paint, that black is flawless! Very cool car, and cool story about the build to go with it. That baby blue '57 is sweet also, some great rides right there.

Dan -- The '57 is on it's chassis -- does NOT need paint -- has it's motor and trans in place. What he's done so far is to break down the doors - dissembled and greased the window lifts. Aligned the doors. And ordered a bunch of parts. It's more of a minor disassembly/dissection to see what's there and what he needs. It is the perfect project for a little perfectionist. All the heavy lifting has been done... now it's a matter of putting it together. I continue to warn him about his perfectionist ways.... as this is supposed to be a driver... No polished anything.... etc. Get in it and go. The Anti '56. It will need a complete interior and he's shopping around for that now. Yesterday we were supposed to go over to a shop (another friend) and check out a job done by Stitches but the seats weren't done so we skipped it until they're in. You know you can contact me and I'll give you my address and you can come over any time. Well.... not when I'm sleeping - but any other time. |

If you saw this paint in person... then you'd really understand. It's SEMA show winning depth and blackness and flawless. I don't even want to be in the same room! I'm a mechanical guy (a greaser) - He's a paint and upholstery guy (a waxer). My cars never get cleaned.... he never stops cleaning. I love to poke people of course - it's just my nature... and if your car is in my possession -- there is a "cost" -- and it's going to be brutal. So I remind him (daily) that the reason it's on my lift - is because he can wax but he can't put stuff together that runs. Of course, this is far from the truth but who's tracking that! When I find something that needs to be re-done -- I ask him when it was last waxed. |
Super slick bad ass black paint! doesn't get much better then that, You have balls the size of King Kong to tear the front off that car,, I totally understand why, Keep posting update pics
|
if you can post up what he chooses for seats and interior. I am almost at the stage
