A CEO of a manufacturing facility is faced with a problem.
His packaging machines have over a 10% failure rate and as a result, his company is shipping empty boxes to their customers at an alarming rate, damaging their reputation as a vendor and threatening their relationships.

They bring in an engineering company at a cost of over 5 million dollars, designs and implements a system with a scale in the production line weighing the cartons as they pass, and if the carton doesn't weigh correctly, completely shuts down the line. A line worker then must then walk over, remove the empty carton, and manually restart the line. The system is implemented and after a few snags, the system is up and running.

A couple of months pass and the CEO checks their error rates and sees the new design system has a 0% failure rate - a statistical impossibility. He consults with department heads to find out the source of the information only to find out in fact, the numbers are correct. So he heads down to the packaging line for investigation. Upon arrival, he sees someone has placed a fan on top of a chair and pointed it at the line - blowing the empty cartons off the line.

He asks who did this, and one of the line workers admitted he had done it because he got tired of walking over removing the empty cartons and restarting the line.

It reminds me of the time I was at SEMA and attended an opening breakfast with Caroll Shelby as the guest speaker. The gentleman interviewing him asked for him to share with the crowd a story about the Cobra Car.

He mentioned in the initial testing the car was overheating. An entire group of lead engineers approached him with the problem and asked for his advice.

His reply: "Well it looks like the radiator is not getting enough air" The engineers politely agreed and with subtle gestures let him know they were aware of that.

Next he said "Well my advice would be to cut a larger hole in the front of the car"
Hence the "fish mouth" look of the Cobra.
And everyone thinks this design was some kind of design marvel. Awesome car, but the thought behind it was all Shelby and his obvious thinking. The results I think speak for themselves.

That is hilarious. Engineering is awesome ... but, sometimes you need experience & common sense.

We had 3 Engineers in our multi-car race team operation ... and they added a great deal to our performance. But every once in awhile ... when they got away from experience & common sense ... the resulting situations proved quite funny.

A medical doctor, an engineer, and a management consultant were arguing about what was the oldest profession in the world.

The doctor started… "Well, in the Bible, it says that God created Eve from a rib taken from Adam’s body. This must have required surgery, and so I can claim with a high degree of confidence that mine is the oldest profession in the world."

The engineer responded, and said, "But earlier in the book of Genesis, it states that God created the order of the heavens and the earth from out of the chaos. This was the first and certainly the most impressive application of civil engineering. Therefore, dear doctor, you are wrong: mine is surely the oldest profession in the world."

The management consultant leaned back in his chair, smiled, and then said confidently, "Ah, but who do you think created the chaos?"

It's not exaclty PC LOL.. Yes Ron, we race at those tracks and all over with CDCRA, and WSDCA. Tomorrow is our first race at the new improved Orange Show Speedway

Oh yeah ... I forgot about Orange Show being converted to dirt.

We raced USAC Focus Midgets there from 2005-2011 (obviously when it was pavement). Orange Show was part of the Western States USAC Tour.

Do you know Walt Boyd & Kyle Cline? They raced Dwarf cars & the USAC Focus Midgets.

I have met Walt Boyd a few times, he is a character!! Don't know Kyle by name ...may know him by car. We've been doing dwarf cars since end of 2009 (I don't drive I wrench). Since you're into pavement... I used to help out a couple of roundy round drivers at Saugus Speedway back in the 80's, and we used to build engines for a lot of cars there (Bill Loe racing engines)..

We ran Orange show Mesa Marin and El Cajon on occasions. Bill Loe went on to work for Spears then Bill Moropoles (sp) doing engines for irwindale and now has a shop up in Bako doing engines for that new track and some dirt cars You know him??

I don't know Bill Loe, but I'm sure I've ran into him at the races.

Over the years we've ran Mesa Marin & El Cajon too. Sorry when they both closed.

I know of Bill Maropulos ... first from Drag racing in the 80's ... then from stock car racing the last decade or so. He is a heck of an engine builder, but I didn't work with him, as we had our our engine development programs (in-house & outside alliances) over the years.
