Speed Tech Shop Project: Down Under 69
Hey all-
Just wanted to start a thread on a car we're working on here at Speed Tech Performance. This 69 Camaro hails from Austrailia and came to us in a pretty rough state. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4716451c.jpg First order of business was designing the car, my first design/ rendering project with Speed Tech since joining their crew. For this project we're not looking to reinvent the wheel with radical body changes and add-ons. This one will be more smooth and subtle with some minor body mods and more focus on paint scheme and interior to stand out from the crowd. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...psdbec0a52.jpg Although it had new rear 1/4s before it got to us, upon tear down we found lots of rust and a very beat up firewall which had been covered over with flat sheet metal. Unfortunately media blasting revealed even more rust. Here's the freshly blasted shell. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps908b758b.jpg Since this shot we've replaced the roof inner structure and outer skin, shaved and formed the drip rail area, and built a completely new firewall. As we move along the car will be getting our full pro-touring front sub frame and suspension package with a dual quad 572 nestled between the frame rails. The engine bay will have a cool twist on the overall paint scheme including of course a color matched engine. More coming soon... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3e07fb39.jpg |
Car was in rough shape, you guys are doing a excellent job. Post some pics of the new firewall. Nice meeting you all yesterday!

Lots going on in the shop, including the wheels for the Camaro were delivered recently. Fronts are 19x9.5s and rears are 20x12s. Here's a couple shots of the back wheel. Nice DEEP lip and take look at this spoke color! Plans are to carry this theme throughout the car. More coming soon...

A few more updates-
Sheet metal replacement is done, so along with the roof and inner structure, the firewall, and part of the trans tunnel, we also replaced both lower rocker panels and did some patch work here and there. Next step was prepping the floor for some under coat. We decided to do it in color, to contrast the black suspension parts and carry the theme of the concept artwork through to the bottom. How about that shade of yellow? Cool, eh? http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2665a216.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0187203a.jpg |
We also have turned some attention to addressing some interior items. First off, we've used our new Trans Tunnel Cover to make room for the T-56. Such a simple install, it sure makes life easier than building a new tunnel.
http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...pse85f589d.jpg Next we had to address the clearance issue that the DSE trailing arms create with the rear seat. Circled in yellow is the area that is required to be modified. In the second photo the yellow arrow shows how far forward the seat is pushed by the new trailing arm pocket. We like the simplicity of our Speedtech Torque arm rear suspension, the trailing arms bolt into the factory leaf spring pockets. This car came to us with this suspension already installed so we're changing things up a bit to make it all work. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps45ff2d96.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8ca752f2.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps732a1b55.jpg This car will be getting a Marquez dash and door panels, along with custom covered Recaro front seats and matching upholstery on the rear seats. You'll be seeing the black, yellow and red theme carried through the interior too. More coming soon... |
Some long over due updates...
Getting ready to head into the body work booth... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6e002339.jpg After Getting the body laser straight it got jammed and is ready for some base coat... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps25ad6f0b.jpg After the base coat and clear on the underside of things. Notice the cool filled in panels under the hood... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps99ea4765.jpg getting some prep work done before laying down the stripes... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7beee704.jpg Back in the paint booth for stripes, pearl and clear coats... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5fa99654.jpg More coming soon... |
Another one to the west.. Maybe I need to move there! That rendering looks awesome. Can't wait to see more of it
|

Lookin good ,....cant wait to see more

Look's awesome.

Couple new photos...
Things are really rolling on the car now! Paint is done and and Travis has been cutting and buffing it, heading towards a mirror finish. Meanwhile the front subframe is coming together as is the 572 BBC/ T56 drivetrain. Pictured here is the cool front drive system we got in from Eddie Motorsports. This system is really nice, it's got just the right sheen on the finish and the bracketry has a real clean and lean design- not big and bulky looking. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps313d9cf0.jpg While the mechanicals are coming together we also have the upholstery under way. We're using Recaro seats which are getting new covers made. Simple yet bold, a good way to describe the whole car. http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...pse2d7a599.jpg |
Looking great. No on the big cowl in my opinion.
|
Its looking sweet!

Thanks for the compliments everyone.
Tmadden- it is a bit big but as Blake said also necessary. Unfortunately sometimes folks get TOO carried away with cowl induction scoop heights and it throws the balance of the overall look off. With this Camaro's huge rear tires, deep offset wheels, and contrasting black rear spoiler it should all visually balance out. Stay tuned for more coolness... |
First spy photos on the paint via Travis' cell phone...
Travis is a fantastic painter, but this is where everything really comes to life! http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d923235.jpg Mmmm, shiny! http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...pse48b6522.jpg Wayne does his best GQ for the reflection test... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7a155849.jpg |
Just seen the dash & engine pics on fb. Looking good! Jay was telling me to keep an eye out for the startup video.
Any reason for the speedo going the opposite way? |
all the gauges rotate out of the center. the 3 gauges on the left rotate to the left and the right rotates to the right, the reason............. it's different.

We took the Camaro to a car show over the weekend, and it took "Best Overall Camaro", we were pretty stoked to get a trophy first time out! :trophy-1302:
Here are a few new build photos and some shots I took after the show. Enjoy! ... http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...psee622bed.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3618f8f6.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps741c04e8.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps09be4346.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...psf135de1f.jpg http://http://i1299.photobucket.com/...ps2de3e358.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2de3e358.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps67a9b0ef.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9fed0765.jpg http://i1299.photobucket.com/albums/...psc7edbcdb.jpg |
