65 GTO Project

5 Attachment(s)
I've been around the hobby for 30 years and I've built some cars so when I started this project just over two years ago I knew what I was getting into... Sort of.. maybe not. 65 GTO, Art Morrison Max-G chassis, LS7 based engine, Procharger, 6 speed etc, etc. It all started out fairly simple and went down hill from there. I'm building the car by myself in my two car garage. Not so easy but it works if you keep it clean. I'll post more pics as I have time.

Welcome Charles. Killer project you've got goin' on there! ... :hello:

Charlesincharge 07-18-2013 03:27 PM

Thanks Ron, I'm trying to work on it as much as possible but I have a wife and a full time job so its a slow process. I did build everything myself. Stainless headers and exhaust, chassis mods, floor pans, etc. I'm sorting out the blower and intercooler along with the front accessory drive now. Trying to get it all to fit isn't easy but I'll make it work.

You've gotten started on the right foot. Thanks for posting pics. Keep us updated. I'll be watching this one. :welcome3:

More pics. The two car garage gets tight.

:omg: I Love that year body style. I'm stoked to see one of these built to this level.

:wow: That is some serious hardware. 3 link the super low stance with the driveline tunnel raised.

You need to throw this up as a build thread.

If you tell me you are planning an earth tone body color with black wheels I will be hopelessly in Love despite the LS motor. You can just keep the hood closed.

I suggest

1965 GTO as the name cuz nothing else is needed to describe it.

Looks great, Charles. Welcome to the site.

:ohsnap: :popcorn2:

lookin' awesome!

Charlesincharge 07-20-2013 02:14 PM

Thanks for the nice words!

How can I change to a build thread? Is there a way to move the entire thread?

I'll post more pics soon.

That is one killer build and the fact its in a home garage makes it that much better.

camcojb 07-20-2013 04:49 PM

One of my favorite cars, and definitely my favorite year. Great project!

BPDRacing 07-23-2013 11:48 AM

Awesome project! I love seeing well sorted project cars being built at home in the garage.

Code510 07-23-2013 12:08 PM

Kudos! Awesome work you have already put into this car already. Can't wait to see more pictures. All in a two car garage too! That's impressive.

Great project Charles! Huge undertaking in a 2 car garage - kudo's to you! Looks great thus far! Keep up the great work! Can't wait to see it completed. BTW - I like your inspiration model on the dash! :D

214Chevy 07-24-2013 12:17 PM

Metal work is awesome. I can imagine how much nicer it'll look when it's all buttoned up with smoothed out welds. :weld:

wookham 07-30-2013 10:47 AM

Hey Charles

WOW i remember when you were just talking about building this beast, looks like your making excellent headway...... i have lots of questions and ideas i'll keep in touch

Flash68 07-30-2013 11:05 AM

:king:

What a project. :bigun2:

Charlesincharge 07-30-2013 11:25 AM

Thanks Wookham, its coming along. This is all going on in my garage on the weekends and the days I call in sick ;). I've built some cars in the past but nothing like this. I learned to tig weld at the Lincoln Electric Motorsports welding school just to build this car. Before this I had very limited sheet metal experience and even less chassis building experience. After two years of fabrication I've figured out and learned quite a bit. Of course this means I've redone parts of the car I did in the beginning when I really wasn't sure how to do it. I'm hoping to wrap up the sheet metal fab work this fall and move to the mechanicals and interior.

PM me and I'll get you over to the house to see it.

waynieZ 07-30-2013 06:15 PM

Awesome project, I love it! Beautiful work.

Code510 07-31-2013 02:19 PM

Looks like how you've built the frame and sheet metal that the bottom side of the car should be pretty much smooth then? Just maybe some exhaust and that's it? I saw this done on one other Chevelle years ago. It was pretty slick!

Charlesincharge 08-01-2013 07:11 AM

Code 510, your correct. the rockers roll down under the car and meet the belly pans. the underside is smooth.

67goatman455 08-01-2013 05:21 PM

Here are a few. Nothing is 100% decided or finished yet. The firewall is back some (3") so the pedals had to come back as well. Right now I like the position and the feel. The factory parking brake assembly was shortened and moved closer to the kick panel. I don't have a gas pedal yet since I don't know if I'll use a cable or drive by wire.

Hey Charles

it looks like you changed the angle of the firewall, how far did you set the motor back??

67goatman455 08-07-2013 05:14 PM

good work on the pedals. gives me a little bit of a look into it before i start messing with mine, any reason you didn't go with the forward facing master cylinders? looks like it would have bolted up to the firewall nicely
