Fast n Loud
Catching a glimpse of Dale Jr's orange 2nd gen on the 60" TV. Priceless!
Man that car started me down this road to building a pro touring car. |

Man that Nomad was BRIGHT! I'm slightly embarrassed that I liked the color but was bummed when I saw them sticking a 350 in it.
|
Those guys don't seem to look up when building these cars. When they showed shots of Jr. driving it, the headliner looked all yellowed and stained. Maybe it was just the lighting, I don't know. It looked crappy. They also never showed the chassis done. They do show body and paint work being done with a rusty nasty frame. They are fun though!
|
I noticed a lot of pitting on the chrome pieces of the interior. The "V" where the speaker and clock are mounted on the passenger side were a notable example. Noticed the ignition switch was in pretty poor condition as well. These are all easily available parts, I'd been embarrassed to post a $26,XXX profit and left off these relatively inexpensive parts.
I cringed a little as they were stripping the top. Won't those rotary sanders mess up the body lines in the top of the Nomad? |
we also assume that it was left like that. We all know how these producers push things to make the dead lines.

I had the guy that appraised that Nomad for the show come and appraise my Volvo X build, and he honestly didnt have a whole lot of nice things to say about it.. They left all the tired trim and interior pieces in place, so alot of that was yellowed or cracked, and the fit and finish wasnt any good at all. It isnt like Mountain Dew wouldnt have paid for fresh catalog pieces.. LOL
That is a total catalog car, so there really isnt any excuse for so much to be left undone, because I am sure most of it could have been overnighted. I can see where Jr. would be happy overall due to what is in his garage. If you look at the other cars they have done with Self Imposed Deadlines, there are so many things left undone and reused, but I guess that is cool if you can get away with it.. I can understand on some of the quick flip freshen ups, but not the crap he is expecting top dollar at the auction for. LOL How hideous was that AC/Console piece, and not to mention the fact how unfuctional the touchscreen stereo was in its position, which is common oversights with their builds.. The bigges joke though, was the show that came on right after that.. LOL It seems that they are trying to find more of these shows that might catch on, so they are giving these off the wall people shows while hoping that their personality is a hit like Duck Dynasty and Fast and Loud. It really isnt about what they are doing, it is more about the social dynamic of their operation and lives, and that is why there have been several recent shows that only have a few episodes made without being picked up.. |
Forgot to mention - all that stainless trim put in a pile. Why make more work for yourself and scratch it up worse? I've buffed and polished miles of those pieces for Tri-5s for our and other people's cars. I'd always ask to please keep it separated. Half the time it was brought over taped together "per side" = way more scratches from the rough areas and brackets and tiny dents. It would have taken more than 10 days to polish that pile of parts out correctly by itself.
Then, saw them "popping in" the pieces with their fists. Next show you're at, check out the trim on Tri-5s with tiny dents every 18" or so - from popping it in with a fist. Why bother if you're just going to damage during installation? At least look like you know what you're doing. I'll step down from my soapbox now. |

What is funny is Dale drove into his shop with the bad ass 67, and then latter, he was happy with their work. The two do not compare.
I hate to say it, but I liked the color. |
Show bugs me, that guy thinks he is the *****.
The next OCC of TV haha Soon they will have a Big Rig and all the toys.:G-Dub: |
All those shows suck..LOL Sorry just my personal opinion
|
I wonder if they fixed all those issues after it was finished,
In general I think those guys are total dumbasses and wouldn't have them build me a riding lawnmower let alone a car |

I'm pretty sure that car was done as a giveaway, something for a Mountain Dew promotion, not Dale Jr's personal car. I think there was a blurb across the bottom of the screen towards the end of the show that said something to the affect of "Enter to win Jr's Nomad at blahblahblah.com..."

I am under the impression, that the car was built for DEW airtime. I imagine the original plan was to do exactly what they did, buy an old restore, repaint it, put a fresh motor in it, give lots and lots of airtime to diet dew.
To me Gas Monkey garage buys cars, puts minimal work and effort into something to flip it for money. They don't advertise a rotisserie restore, instead they breath new life into old cars to keep them on the road and out of the junkyard. After the first couple of episodes, i quit paying attention to prices paid, and profits made. I also believe those are somewhat fabricated. Instead i watch the show for the entertainment factor, and to see what they are going to do next...mainly what tom is going to do. HA |

Funny thing is that before the TV show all I ever saw out of Gas Monkey here at local shows were Ratrods. Nothing shiny, nothing modern. I've got a friend that used to work with Aaron and said that he is the real deal. What you see on the TV show doesn't even give a glimpse of what what the man can really do. I know people behind the scenes with Counting Cars and it is more of the same... all about the drama. You never see the guys that actually do the builds and work on the cars. It's all just propped up for the TV show. |
If you ever see the rerun of Overhaulin where they surprise Chip by ruining his truck, look at his face. Doesn't look real happy. How do a bunch of half asses build something for someone like that? I guess it's the thought that counts.
|
When will they start makin car show's for real car guy's.Real car guy's watch show's like this BUT we all know it's bull****.

I'm pretty sure the reason Dale Jr. and Mountain Dew picked the Gas Monkey Garage to build their car is because right now it is one of the most popular car related shows on television. If Desert Car Kings had a higher rating, they probably would have used them. I don't look at it as they paid seventy five thousand dollars to get a half ass built nomad, but they paid seventy five thousand dollars to get three million dollars worth of air time. Not bad marketing if you ask me, they've got all of us talking about it.

The star of the show is the Oriental woman that has the interior repair business . keeps it real by calling them ass monkeys, thats what they are.. LOL:sarcasm_smiley:

I always figured on overhauling they don't always finish the car. A dead giveaway are the episodes you never see the car move under its own power. |

It's clear I was speaking out of my ass and don't know what I'm talking about. Neither Chip or his dad are half asses and the f100 looks real nice.
 Dan |
