Friend's First Track Day
My friend finally got his car car out to his very first track day at High Plains Raceway in Colorado yesterday. It's an absolutely amazing replica of the #6 Mark Donohue Trans Am Champion Javelin and he had a blast so after sending me some photos and a couple of short videos, I put together this video for him to Tom Petty's "Runnin' Down a Dream" I figured the two went together.
He was surprised to say the least at the reaction of fellow drivers when he fired it up and backed it out of the trailer. He said people were all over the car wondering if it was the real car that sold recently for $847,000. Many asked to have their pictures taken sitting in the car. He got three sessions in with no problems and he was needless to say, HAPPY. Now he knows what improvements to make over the winter. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...psfb8c04ae.jpg THE ENGINE http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps613979d3.jpg |

Found this visual kind of interesting. Sort OLD versus NEW.
I guess the Mustang guy showed a lot of interest and asked a lot of questions about the car. http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...psa32d3eee.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps68d88efc.jpg |

Talked to ColoradoAMX today and told me a great story I had to share about his first track day before he even hit the track.
They were under a large canopy at the track for a drivers meeting learning the rules and protocol for entering the track, passing etc. Wayne was talking to a few Porsche drivers and they asked Wayne, “What are you driving”? Wayne simply said, “Some old Javelin”. The Porsche guys just said……. “Oh”. At that point his son Aaron heads over to the car, fires it up and drives it over to the drivers meeting canopy. EVERYONE empties out of the canopy and the meeting rushing to the car. The Porsche guys say, “THAT’S THE OLD JAVELIN YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT”? They thought it was the real car and were taking photos of the car with people wanting to sit in it for photos and wanting to see the engine. Eventually, Wayne told them it was a replica of the Donohue car. But he said that was almost as fun as driving the car on the track. So, which one is the real deal??? http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps901950f2.jpg http://i1287.photobucket.com/albums/...ps708af9e3.jpg |

Dammit, I was going to go out to the track with my Corvette last Friday and didn't. I bought some new wheels with Hoosiers awhile back and have been jonesing to get a track day in ever since. Apparently I should have gone and I could have checked this car out; I love anything remotely "old school T/A"! Neat looking car - I like the little details like the Traco sticker on the valve cover, I guess they built engines for the AMXs?
I was going to head out there this Friday but I have a chance to get into the machine shop here at work and use the CNC to make some pieces for my new race car project which is incredibly rare so I need to get that handled. This is definitely the time of year to be at HPR in CO - the weather is perfect for getting your best lap times in. |
