New standing mile record.. 278.2 mph

So I was at the Texas Mile this weekend cheering on my buddy that owns the Ford GT that had the record last year. The previous record was 267. They made a pass this morning and went 278.2! Crazy huh?

Stuart Adams 10-27-2013 02:39 PM

Wow. Video?

Flash68 10-27-2013 02:51 PM

Wow. This is all I could find so far:

Assuming similar atmospheric conditions......11 mph's is really raising the bar on the competition!

Car is a 2006 GT, the motor is a built John Mihovetz Accufab engine now on Methanol. All I can say it makes around 2300 hp and they ran 278.2 at about 2000...:)

That is amazing. If you watch the video you can hear a little wheel spin in almost every gear with that much hp. Just on the edge of traction to get the most forward bit. The seat of the pants feel must be like a fighter jet.

Sieg 10-27-2013 11:43 PM

Midway into 4th gear it sounds like it started to hook up. Car could use more aero downforce.

My guess is here's why they would rather ignore the wheelspin….

The rear wing works in conjunction with the rest of the body, the front splitter and the rear diffuser to produce downforce. This is the effect the air has on the moving vehicle. It also has the effect of causing drag. Downforce is helpful as this increases the effective load onto the tyres giving a greater traction ability (the tyres’ ability to create grip increases with the load or weight applied).
Drag is basically how resistant the vehicle is to penetrating the air, and is a function of many different fac- tors, including frontal area. Increasing the wing angle to give more downforce will increase the frontal area of the vehicle and consequently increase the drag level, reducing the top speed.

That sound great. But to get the record to you name ,you can not chance the cars profile, silhouette.
At least at according Guinness World Records and those are the main rules everybody is racing with.
That way every run is comparable to others.

Another angle popped up on Jalopnik:

I've been building my car for years and run at Maxton & Dade Collier a few times. I hope to EVENTUALLY break 200. Can't imagine 278! Thats almost twice as fast as I can go now!

Figured that was the case and they profiled the carbon rear tail section as much as the regulations allowed.

WOW!
That is insane. :headspin:

So what is the record for exactly? Sounds like you have to maintain a Forg GT profile or is it profile for whatever production vehicle you are representing. This would keep complete custom vehicles out of the running.

Current record by Johnny Bohner from PPR ,WPB FL with his Ford GT: 283mph,

Read about it here: http://www.worldrecordacademy.com/tr...rd_213218.html

Somebody mae notice that there is one speed record made by Finn on that same page..

You can use what ever car you want but it has to be production car, no tubeframe, carbon body Camaros as in Drag Week.

Earlier Sieg wrote that texas GT guys made a rear section from carbon, to lose weight or why? What I know about land speed racing, like Johnnys GT, they like to add weight. To get more stability at high speeds.

I was honor to meet Johnny at his shop a year ago and got a shop tour and got a chance to study his GT compare our stock one.

I know that car but that 283 number was at a unofficial "rental" using a V-box.. Not taking anything away from anyone, cars going that fast are in another league. I thought running 247 in my Supra was fast 5 years ago but now cars are getting crazy fast!

SuperB70 10-29-2013 08:53 AM

I edit my post, dont know nothing about any unofficial, it has been posted at Guinness records. Then it must been official record.

247mph in a Supra. That is same what the fastest Suora is running in Finland nowdays. We got a C6 Vette that is going faster. Lot of Saab's, Volvo's and Audis, four banger that are around 200mph

phillym5 10-29-2013 09:05 AM

Simply amazing.
I've been taking my 69 to these half mile races out here. She see's 180+ in the half mile. Be interesting to see what she does in a mile.

That was based on my observation, to me the rear section appeared to be a custom crafted carbon piece........I could very easily be wrong!

LS7 Z/28 10-29-2013 08:21 PM

Wow, I'd like to have a chance at running 200 one day but it seems like now the goal is 300. Seems like pure insanity. I love it.
