Momo steering wheel, Ididit column and NRG adapter?
So I have a replacement Ididit column i'm gonna be installing. I'm wanting to run an aftermarket steering wheel. Looking at maybe a Momo model. After "googling" around I came across the NRG Short Hub Adapter for domestic applications which includes Ididit brand columns. NRG also sells a pretty sweet looking quick release setup. The short hub description states it is made for their quick release. All three of those components, i.e. wheel, hub and quick release, have a 6 bolt pattern.
I'm curious if you can run the short hub adapter directly to the wheel without the quick release? The QR is cool but I'm concerned it would but the wheel too close to the driver. If nobody happens to know, i'll just give them a call next week. Any other thoughts on the NRG products? I'd never heard of the brand till I started looking for this type of setup. Products look nice but hand-on experience from some Lat-g peeps would be a plus :-). Thanks! |
I have an NGR quick release on my stock column with a Momo wheel. Great piece IMO, if you need to do anything under the dash it's real nice not to have the wheel in your way. Theft protection is another bonus.

I have the same setup with a Sparco wheel. I was also a little concerned about whether it would put the wheel too close, but I am on the tall side, so it works out just about perfectly for me. My only gripe is the shifter is a touch too far forward relative to the wheel, but I've gotten used to it now.
As Sieg said, it's really nice to pop the wheel off when you want to work around the dash area, and I took mine off when I've left it parked somewhere that I'm not completely comfortable with and just put it in the trunk. Nice piece, well made, I recommend it. http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...ps0e5ab7b2.jpg http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m...psfb62b150.jpg |
NRG question

Hey guys, im wanting to run this release on one of the cars at the shop.
Right now I have a Sparco adapter already on the column. Can I run the Gen 2 off of that adapter? Is the NRG release base 6 bolt pattern the same as the steering wheel 6 bolt pattern? What I want to do is run the release between the wheel and boot. I ordred a regular QR but its mounted on the lower 3 bolt side. No bueno to use. |
Vince,
I bought the NGR quick release and mounted it to my Momo adapter hub which was a collapsible design. Regretfully it put the wheel too close and cramped arm movement. I purchased the narrower NGR hub which put the wheel close to the previous location. The bolt patterns were the same in my situation - 70mm. |

Its a nice set up and is built right. |
How much time do you have with the adapter? Any play in it?

unlike the stupid one I bought from grant. Feels like the darn wheel is loose.
Just ordered a few and should be in on friday. I'll post a few pictures of the install. |

great idea... I like the ability to pop it off and get under the dash a lot easier
Sieg...is that the narrow version? On their website it looks like the Gen 1.0.... |

What I don't like is that it requires two hands to release it. While a release can serve as a security aid and can add convenience in cockpit maintenance it's real purpose is to aid egress in the event of something awful happening. One handed release is IMO a big part of that. |

It's a real luxury to pop the wheel off to access under the dash after all these years. Beats a Club for theft protection too. |
The NGR is definitely a 2-hand release. I love it for removing for work in/under the dash area, and when I had to leave the car parked outside, I removed it and took it into my hotel room with me.
For my height, the steering wheel being a little further away from the pedals helps as well, but if it were 1/2" or so shorter it might be ideal. Regardless, it's a high quality piece that I really am glad i purchased... No slop at all, very solid feel. I think for a street driven car, you really want the 2-hand release mechanism also. While highly unlikely, the last thing you want is to somehow accidentally release the wheel while rolling down the road... |

But the way I look at it, you use two hands to pull a wheel off anyways. Your wheel holding hand can push the release button and the other pulls the slide up. It can be done. Practice Quote:

How do we know the splines are compatible with our stock columns? Getting ready to pull the trigger.... |

Same for my 2nd gen. I bought mine from a company in Dallas (cannot remember the name at the moment), but I called them and confirmed the specific hub before ordering. All went together just time, and I'm still really happy with it. Not the cheapest setup, but definitely quality.

Perfect, thanx you guys.

I was able to do this cause I ordered a column that is 2" shorter than the original column. Worked out great. Wheel and release bolt pattern is 70mm. |

Warning: You lose the collapsible safety factor of that adapter using the short hub! |
Hey Sieg,
Who did you purchase your hub / quick release from? I called NRG and they don't sell direct to the public. Think i'm gonna go with the same finish you have. Thanks BB |
Sorry for the delayed response, here's the Amazon link where I purchased:

So question for you or Siegster, i've got everything mounted and the stamped plate that retains the horn assembly for the Momo wheel wont seat into the NRG 2.5 assembly. If i dont use it the horn that will be an ugly hollow space, if i do use it i can't tighten the wheel down all the way. Suggestions? |
Think i got it. The horn ring doesn't quite seat but seems ok. Horn works.

Not sure how to improve the horn fitment.........it's not the ideal design. It's on my "need to improve" list. Actually I'm surprised my driveline harmonics issue didn't pop it out.

The stamping's I.D. dimension exceeds that of the I.D. of the NRG part by probably 3mm. So Vince, which screws did you get from McMaster Carr? I'm in need of M5., and 15mm? Anodized black, countersunk, allens, prefered. Its too hold the wheel onto the NRG part. Couldn't find them at Orchard, and bought some that were 10mm long, but due to the "not seating", there too short. I used the ones from my Grant (but there's only 5 and there not quite the proper thread pitch). Siegster, did you get the problem solved? i watched your build thread and you've got it solved? well 95%? |

the ones i have. http://www.mcmaster.com/#91239a232/=s4wrbt come in packs of 100 |
Hmm,
Ran the nut down on the Short Hub and the OD of the hub bottoms out on the OD of my new Ididit column. Is there something that is supposed to go between the hub and the steering shaft base? Off to go buy a steering wheel puller to get that hub back off. |
I had the same problem True. I put a couple of extra C-clips on the splined shaft and it did the trick. Scratching my head on that one too...
