1965 Mustang GT5.0 at GAP Racing

This project is a 1965 Mustang that the owner has had since it was new. The car was originally green. He then painted it red back in the 70's and did a lot of drag racing with it. The car had had a hard life and then was put away for over 20 years. Most of his family members have forgotten about it. When the car came to us, the plan was to go back original and install a mild 289 and a 4 speed. As with many project, things changed. We sat down and discussed hos options for making it more modern, giving him the ability to actually drive it and enjoy it.

1965 Ford Mustang Fast Back GT :

Total Cost Involved Front Suspension
Total Cost Involved Torque Arm Rear Suspension
Ford Motorsports 5.0 Crate Engine
American Powertrain 5 Speed Trans
Wilwood 4 Piston 13" Brake kit front and rear
Ford 9" Housing
Mini Tubs
Vintage Air
Plus more........

Here is the project the day we picked it up

So as we started to do the tear down, we realized the car was in need of a lot of sheet metal.

Headed off to the media blaster

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:06 PM

When we got it back to the shop, we started replacing the inner tubs with a wider version, new Quarters, Floors, Trunk, Doors, Fenders, pretty much most of the sheet metal was replaced

The new power plant arrived

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:10 PM

Both shock towers and the entire front inner fender area was destroyed. It had been in an accident and the repair was horrible. We cut it all out of the way and started installing the TCI front suspension
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4152d1cf.jpg

Test fit the engine
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2ecab6a7.jpg

Started fabricating some better looking panels to clean up the engine bay area
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps70bd0a16.jpg

Then we installed the 5.0 with the 5 Speed. Then we ended up raising the trans tunnel

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:11 PM

Fabbed up a radiator mount.
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps02cd4b1b.jpg

And a cover to hide the cap and the air intake
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps77d2e376.jpg

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:14 PM

The drip rails needed some attention. They were rotten and falling off
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ab135bb.jpg

Once all the sheet metal was lined out, we started hacking up the front bumper to make it fit tighter
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...psa34172c9.jpg

http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps20d2a6df.jpg

The rear bumper needed a lot of attention too
http://i1337.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1f46af91.jpg

Once they were trimmed and notched and re shaped, we took them off and welded all the holes up too

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:15 PM

Suspension stuff is headed out to the powder coater

GAP Industries 01-01-2014 01:18 PM

Hope to have some more updates early in January. As soon as its buffed out, we will have it in the clean room so it can go back together.

We did not do a lot of custom stuff to the car. Customer wanted to keep all the factory trim and stainless. Should be a really cool driver.

I do not have any pictures of the rear suspension at the moment. But we should have the car back at the shop in the next few weeks. I will post them up asap

Body shop update. Had to go out and look at the 68 Camaro they are doing for us. Here is the 65 Mustang. All that is left is to finish painting the engine bay, paint the bottom and wet sand and buff it out. Should not be long now.

Looks like the project is coming along quite nicely. That Coyote is going to look great in it's new home. I can't wait to see more of it in person.

^^I agree.

Restocreations 04-01-2014 06:09 PM

Nice Work!

I see you went with the TCI front end. Im using it as well in my 67 mustang with a coyote motor and I am not a fan. What are you going to do for a master cylinder? I did not even have room for an SN95 master, so i had to use a custom pedal assembly with a 90 degree master cylinder and booster that are mounted under the dash. Also, do you have issues with your tie rod angles? Mine are at a 35 degree angle relative to the rack when attached to the spindles. I am going to need to have some spacers milled to correct the issue. Any hood clearance problems? My shelby hood cleared before i put on the Roush supercharger, but there was no way a stock hood would have cleared.

Congrats on your marriage. Best of luck bro!
Keep us posted when you get back at it.

taxidermy man 07-04-2014 10:07 PM

Looking forward for more progress on this car, love the early fastbacks.

GAP Industries 08-31-2014 12:49 PM

Ok. Sorry for lack of updates. I have been super busy since I got back from my honeymoon. Our Stampede project has required a lot of my time but I am shipping it off to Recovery Room soon and will be able to focus more on some of our other big projects.

We had some issues with the painter, but finally got the rest of the body parts back.

Doors are installed

Who's hood did you use it has a real good look to it

67XR7 09-02-2014 03:29 PM

what is your solution for the brake master and slave master with that coyote motor in there?

Everything Ive seen says its a PITA and there is nothing that just bolts in, 100% custom.

It's a 68 style shelby hood from Maier racing. We removed the loovers at the rear for a cleaner look

We are going to make an offset for a Wilwood MC with a remote reservoir.
