Dz 372
Hey guys. I wanted to start a thread on my project for this year. I want to pull the original 302 in my car for detailing/re-sealing, so I figured I'd have a little fun with it during the process. I've got a 372ci small block that has been built like a 302 on steroids with 13.5:1 compression and a big solid roller. My plan is to put the 372 into the Camaro with an Auto Gear M23W transmission. I also plan to add a DSE power steering box and upgrade the stock seating and gauges. I won't be changing anything that can't easily be changed back. Here are a few pics. Updates to follow.

Love the updated wheels. Can we get a better pic in the sunlight?
|
What's the specs on the wheels and tires?

The motor is coming together now. The long block is complete. I'm currently setting up the shaft rockers and waiting for pushrods. Still need to decide on a carb.

oh preeeeety! be sure to post a dyno graph when it gets finished. Good luck!
|
We had a great day on the dyno today. The motor fired right up and made 564 hp on the first full pull. Best numbers of the day were 579 hp @ 7,000 rpm and 491 lb/ft @ 5,300 rpm. The best torque number was 497.5 lb/ft @ 5,300 rpm and 574 hp @ 6,800 rpm with slightly less timing. The motor made 390 lb/ft all the way down at 3,000 rpm so I was pretty happy with that. It didn't leak a drop of oil either. We probably could have hit 600hp with a carb spacer and some dyno only timing/jetting, but I didn't see the point.
If you guys have never been to an engine dyno, I highly recommend it! Here's a video of one of the pulls... |

I decided to run a McCleod RST twin disc clutch with a McCleod steel billet flywheel and a Silver Sport 621 bellhousing. The bellhousing indexed nicely with .005" total runout. I could not get the transmission mated up using the plastic alignment tool provided with the clutch. I ended up getting the Ram clutch alignment tool yesterday and it worked great. The pilot bearing nose on the tool was initially about .002 oversize and would not slide into the pilot bushing. About 30 seconds with some 400 grit sandpaper brought the tool down to size. I was able to install the floater, top disc, and pressure plate with the tool in place. With the Ram clutch tool, the transmission seated perfectly the first time.

This car is so clean, I love the way it looks with your 2nd set of wheels.
There is really nothing cooler than high compression. What fuel will you be running? I assume your just looking at doing limited street cruising, or are you planning on running some time attack type events with the car? |

Very nice setup, motor sounds great with big numbers too:thumbsup:

Hey guys, we delayed putting the motor in the car this year for good cause. The exciting news is that the swap will be televised on one of the cable TV automotive how-to shows. Filming is scheduled for end of January but I do not have an air date yet. More details to follow.
|
Congrats, Neil! Be sure to give us the details when you can.
|
That's sweet Neil, keep us in the loop!

I went for a DZ inspired motor, too. RPM and Compression can be a lot of fun in this style car ;).
