It’s headed to the body shop to begin repairing all the body panels, prep, and paint. The drip rails will be shaved and the seam between the rear quarters and the filler panel will be welded for a nice clean look. Im using the factory subframe. I sent it off to Precision Powdercoat in Houston and they gave it a nice satin black finish. I highly recommend these guys for powdercoat work. Before: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3813/1...c334e6b9_b.jpg After: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3755/1...42de699f_b.jpg My son and I built a body cart, and it was a nice father/son project. Little over $100 invested and it works like a charm. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3784/1...29b7a3dc_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3789/1...a784e5e6_b.jpg Here are some teardown pics: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7424/1...873b2f0e_b.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5547/1...152abe27_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3672/1...128f80b7_b.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2870/1...6a5ef177_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7302/1...41fff716_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7434/1...a1e11900_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7346/1...aa0ff40b_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7340/1...10670691_b.jpg Buddy cutting out the glass http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2892/1...33524ea3_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3724/1...8fa263bd_b.jpg I’ll add pics as I go. |
Nice project! Great to have your son involved!! Where does the resale Red name come into play? From the pervious owner I take it?

Resale Red actually came from a buddy of mine. He came over to check out the car, after I purchased it, and the first words out of his mouth were "Resale Red". He didn't mean it in an insulting manner at first but as we evaluated the car more, it lived up to that name. I do not want this thread to focus on the past as I've forgiven the previous owner for what he did. I'm open to all ideas for this build, so feel free to express your opinion on things. My goal is to have this car road worthy by next fall. |

Glad to see you are going forward with the car and with what looks like a lot of gusto. I hope it turns out well for you. I hope that I have (a) a son and (b) a son who wants to help me restore cars! Good luck! |

Anyone have a good source for a 12-bolt rearend? I'm looking for something complete but want to keep cost in check. |

I really appreciate the offer. |
Great project! You and your son will look back on this and grin with pleasure. Good for you guys.

Something to think about. I originally got the rearend to swap out my BOP 10-bolt rear, but decided not to do it (time constraint). |

Bye bye drip rails:

Great project! Looks like you guys are having fun!

If you have time, and the ability to scrounge, look for a Ford 9 inch from a 67 to 69 Mercury Cougar. They are virtually identical and swap pretty easy into a first gen Camaro. It will need to cut off and weld on a set of spring perches.
Another option is to live with the 10 bolt. As long as it is the largest ring gear that is available in a 10 bolt (8.6 inch if memory serves), if you are not going to be regularly beating on it, and if you are running less than 500 HP, it will serve you well. Looks like it already has disc brakes. Just find a good shop to go through it and upgrade the axles, put in C-clip eliminators and a posi-unit and they work well. Couldn't help notice to the hole on the fire wall and the dash panel behind it on the passenger side. Just curious what the plan was for that hole. Pretty sure you didn't do it. |

Funny you mention the hole in the firewall. It was the bright idea of a previous owner to run the LS engine harness into the cabin. To make matters worst, he cut into the seam. :hairpullout: http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5523/1...391e52bf_b.jpg The holes will be filled with new sheet metal. :D |

A quick before and after:

Looks good! Keep the updates coming.

I agree with U-turn Looks great and I'm looking forward to more updates.

Cutting out rust:
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3773/1...a17f168b_b.jpg Ordered new sheetmetal, steering box and other misc parts. FedEx and UPS drivers are going to know my house by heart for the next few months. |
Cool build... keep at it.

Mocked up the motor to see if I had clearance issues with the oil pan and crossmember. The motor mounts and plates that came with the car were not for a LS swap. Luckily Philip, CENCALC6, had a set of energy suspension mounts and LS plates he hooked me up with. The motor fits like a charm with the correct setup.
I bolted the trans up to see where the tailshaft mount lined up, and I'm going to use the BMR trans crossmember. A factory cross member was used previously and it caused the tailshaft to point upwards. I read the 4L60E pan should be at zero degrees when installed. Front coils and new steering components installed

BMR Trans Crossmember showed up. Its a really nice piece, for the money, with tons of adjustability.
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3751/1...394093ee_b.jpg Body work is coming along and hopefully the car will be in primer this week. |
This is turning out really nice!!

I love that you're including your boy in the build... And building these at home is way harder than it looks... Never enough tools and never enough space... I've built many this way - trust me. I love it!
|
Looks like you're making great progress. Are you going to reuse the Dynatech headers? If so, it's good idea to mock them up as well so you can check for clearances.

These are mock up pics before the steering box but there is plenty of room with the box installed: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7392/1...e3db9a65_b.jpg http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2852/1...0c9e1309_b.jpg |
Very Nice!!!

My two little helpers hard at work. My daughter supervises and J does the wrenching. Gotta love it!
My daughter already called dibs on the car. http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5480/1...84828649_b.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5538/1...2a4ee174_b.jpg |
Great pics of the kids!
I used to "help" my Grandfather and Uncle (he had a yellow 57 Chevy)....When I was about that age. So the '57 was almost new! UGH! When I got in their way - My Grandpa would dump a coffee can of nuts and bolts out on the work bench and ask me to sort them... HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... In the summer it was a coffee can with water and a paint brush - and he'd have me paint the house... Guess that was "pre" X box. |
Quote:
I'm really pushing concepts with J so he starts understanding how things work. His questions are always answered. Their minds are sponges at that age. |
Nice build and can't beat the father and son time

Decided to tear down the engine due to low compression readings.
Found this needle bearing cap floating around in the block (None were missing though): http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7433/1...e595ccb4_b.jpg Heads: http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7391/1...46445661_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3816/1...114927bb_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7429/1...a656b472_b.jpg Cylinder wall: http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2764/1...4e2ff5a5_b.jpg Water jackets: http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3800/1...7e436691_b.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7398/1...e815dd0f_b.jpg http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3793/1...7c948bfa_b.jpg Side of me just wants to get a new crate engine, but the practical side is saying to rebuild this one. Any input will be greatly appreciated. |
