1980 Z28
When this first came in we thought we could do a quick paint job, update the suspension and brakes make it a roller so the customer could install a GM crate engine. The owner bought it sight unseen but had it inspected. At first it looked great.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psfbf68b1c.jpg We removed the rear bumper and found this. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps25393360.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps8b89dc3f.jpg Cut out the first layer of rust http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6097f373.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psa5a1bc8e.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psc50f4c39.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps1a300482.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps1ba0b01a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps0bac873d.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps7c8490f1.jpg |
So this is why the Mustang is on the back burner!
What's the plan for this? How involved do you plan on getting with this one? Stock or modified? |

One of the first things we did was install Global West subframe connectors

Thats a common place for rust on these cars
|
The T-top channel had rust that Brian had to cut out and fabricate patches

The owner ordered a DSE roll bar made for a 1980 Camaro.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psabfba9ce.jpg Sanded and epoxy primed http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps9dba3ed3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps36e2e23f.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps51e63443.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psd5ae8194.jpg Before installing the roll bar we had to patch a few small holes in the floor and sand followed by a couple coats of epoxy http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psdffbce1a.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps33e29c01.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps86cf7efd.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps32762367.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psf9c41923.jpg |
The right fender had rust in the brace plus a small spot on the fender. This is what it looked like under the brace.

As we were taking the front end apart we noticed we had a rust problem where the steering box and sway bar bolted to the frame
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...psb1a1f589.jpg Sway bar bolts http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps2789aab0.jpg There was a lot of rust inside the frame http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps6938c517.jpg Last Friday a semi delivered this DSE powdercoated assembled hyrdoformed subframe with rack and pinion steering and coilover shocks. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps931722d3.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v3...ps02ad801f.jpg |

Very nice looking Disco era Z28 Camaro.
|
We are finished except for installing the windshield and back glass molding that the owner has. He will finish putting it together. I'm not sure what he is going to do with the rear suspension.

The EPA regs as we know strangled factory performance cars back then obviously, but at least the Z's and TA's of that era weren't dull looking. :)
