One thing about doing a project like this, the 911 guys snub there noses
when asking any info on their forums. Really they just read and never give any advise. I have found this forum to be completely different and thank you all very much. :) I'm using a 911 / 996 suspension and a Boxster transmission the two share tons of parts. I have been asking in the Porsche sites if there's a factory axle I could use but get no love at all. The 996 and the Boxster use the same control arms and I think the same rear hubs so its likely one end will slide in fine, the inside end is likely the same as well. The rear track is basically the same so its likely someone knows. I'm picking up the Boxster trans tomorrow (Sunday) so I should know soon. Pictured is a G-50/01 and good trans but I'm not going that way. Renegade Hybrids in Las Vegas is using the Boxster now over the G-50 and have this dialed in great !!! One thing I learned from my old 914 / V8 was its so important to match up the correct transmission and gearing or your project wont be worth a hoot. I was using a 911/930 4 speed in my previous car and had loads of trouble getting the clutch to work well. Its a great transmission strong as they get for an off the shelf transaxle and it shifted odd. There was a huge dual gate action that had to happen in order to engage a gear. Nothing like a modern smooth action found on newer designs. It took a while to master it but it was bullet proof (for me anyway).:hitaxeonthehead: The LS1 is a new world for me and I have to be honest I'm clueless as to what cam to use and since I have some PRC heads from Texas performance and speed makes it even harder for me to move forward. I am glad you posted it here in project progress threads. You will find much support here, and plenty of good advice as well. There are many Porsche fans here (I am one of them savin up for a newer 911) and most of us here aren't "purists", we are "performance car guys"....i'm sure if somebody put a supercharged aluminum 4 cyl in a Prius, we'd be watching...haha....

Starting to put things together. I am mocking up where to mount the A/C
compressor. I've seen a number of compressors that will fit the space represented by the coffee (red) plastic container. I am also looking for a power steering pump to put in the center above the crank shaft pulley to act as a pump and an adjuster. I was able to install the alternator quite easily, it didn't fit but was close. I had to cut a small amount off the case of the unit and refit one of the 3 housing bolts. Having done that it fits tight & keeping it low as I can. Moving along building this project, it seems almost endless. I am getting the engine together and building the cooling system. I've got the 914 wiring harness installed and have the LS1 unit ready to install. I'm going to use 2 Spal 12 inch fans. I think they seem small but they say each is rated at 3,000 cfm that's a total of 6,000 cfm. I'm going to call Spal and ask them about this spec. to be sure. I'm also looking at a clutch, its a pricy unit because I have to use a Porsche 911 unit.

So I may have missed this, but whats the weigt differance between the LS and flat four?
And your going all 996 suspension/brakes right? steering too? I'm loving watching this thing come together....and yes, it does seem endless. But remember, we eat pizza one bite of one slice at a time haha. After "googling" apparently the weight of an LS long block is about 400 for a long block LS vs 240 for a flat four iron? sound right? |

Its not the kind of balanced shape I like. I do respect the ability of the vision & craftsmanship. However I get what you mean about tweaking the shape. I'm not the designer type , wish I was :poke: Being the only one building this car often it seems there's so much work to do I have to keep telling myself to be patient. Design wise I love the mid 60s corvette front
park signal light in front below the bumper line. Like to incorporate that aspect. :guns: |

I'm waiting for my radiator cooling fans to arrive, so I decide to mount the electric power steering pump. This pump is found on a 90 - 93 Toyota MR2, built of all steel/metal and since I used it on my last V8 914 & had success in the past. I built my former cars P/S system using a VW Jetta steering rack and made my tie-rods using a mix of Porsche 930 parts and Jetta. Here some real engineers designed this system (Porsche inc ) since I'm basically using 2004 Porsche 996 suspension. I may need to tweak the pressures to get the desired steering feel. I also picked up some great relays (transit bus) to handle the amperage load. I tried using starter relays on my last build and they just melted down quickly and the factory ones aren't designed to run fulltime and roasted. I also will incorporate a cooler to handle the extra heat because of the 100% duty cycle.

hey man, good progress. don't forget to pull those tie rod boots back and measure where the tie rod is actually rotating off the end of the rack. Then compare that to the rotation points of the lower control arm. That rack is low enough that it is likely inline or close enough to inline with the lower control arms that you can make them the same width by either trimming the tie rod mounts down or add "bumpsteer spacers" to move that tie rod position into line with the inner control arm pickup points. Having 914s prior, I am assuming you have seen those turbo tie rod kits for them with spacers that would move the tie rods out to match the 914 control arm width.
This is pretty much the starting point to get to a "zero bump" geometry. You will actually never get zero bump thru motion, at least not that I have ever seen, but you can get bump down to near zero values thru good range of motion if you make sure to get the inner rotation point in the right spot to begin with. This will require measuring and likely making mount spacers at the strut arm to get the tie rod angle maximized as well. |
Here is a picture of the engine and the water pump manifold I picked up. It is a pain to install because of real hard to get to fasteners but worth it.

In this picture of the blue clutch pressure plate I forgot the starter ring gear is bolted to the pressure plate hold down bolts. I forgot to install it !!!!!! Did notice it prior to installing the transmission :trophy-1302:

I've been accused of being a Ford guy for years, but the 914-V8 has always been on my list of must-do hotrods. I really like where this one's going!
If you ever want to avoid some of the complexity of your power steering system, seriously look into electric power (avoids pump/leaks/hoses/etc.). I've had very good luck/experience with Unisteer's 4500-pound universal setup... |

This is a project I've wanted to hit for years. Will get there eventually.
Although the 914 has been replaced by a Cayman in my head. Keep it up. One bite of the elephant at a time. |

I'm close to getting it on the road, As you guys know Jeff "spode" does fantastic work. As I have said before there is no way I built this chasse. That was Jeff's very handy work. I am waiting for a cable shifter I ordered from "cable shift . com". Its a few weeks away and I have some more work to do to get this thing from being a walking ticket. I did drive it around the house in first gear and seems ok but we all there will be a lot of adjusting before its really ready to go. I still need a muffler shop to connect the Z06 mufflers I got used and a fire wall would be a plus along with a front and rear window, doors etc.

The power steering looks heavy. Mini uses a all electric power steering that might save some weight. That is a great project.
