The official "magnetic brake" thread

We get bombarded with question about our magnetic brake. I will just start posting up applications in this thread as they come accross my desk.

So that 16 gauge capacity is a bit of a understatement. Pretty impressive. So .120" has to be about the limit??? I'm pretty sure I need one of those but I need a bead roller worse. Your going to have to hook me up on that Shane. Awesome piece of machinery ya got there.

coolwelder62 02-14-2014 05:45 AM

I see a need for that almost everyday.

We have that same brake Scott. I can tell you we absolutely love it. The more you use it, the more things you think of that you can do with it!

Hook him up Shane!

GodSpeed 02-14-2014 09:42 AM

Yes, I will be having one of these very soon.

mitch_04 02-14-2014 01:41 PM

I want the tool and the knowledge on how to build that rear!!!

The machine is rated for 16 gauge full width, but we have plenty of guys pushing that spec.....as you can see.

INTMD8 02-17-2014 09:50 AM

I've been enjoying mine. Rebuilt part of my floors and am now building the core support from scratch with a sheet of 16ga steel.

It does bend 16 gauge full width no problem as long as there is enough engagement.

I've found on pieces you want a strengthening lip that are too narrow for the top die, you need to engage the edge by at least .400 or so or it wants to lift the die.

Really? I thought the only thing you knew about bent metal was how to straighten it?

LOL

BAILEIGH INC 02-28-2014 06:35 AM

Here is a project by one of our customers. You will notice radius bending with a piece of solid rod as well as box bending......

There is not a single machine on the market today that can perform all of these functions at once.....except a magnetic box and pan brake.

Here is the thread: Woo Hoo It's Started! - Page 3 - Lateral-g Forums

Looks nice!

I've been working on a core support for my Cadillac as well. No shots of the mag brake in action but aside from the lower corners that are .125 steel plate, the entire thing started out as a sheet of 16ga mild steel.

Here is one with the rest of the panels under the hood. This is the first project I did with this machine. There is no learning curve, the machine just works.

Hi Shane,

Sorry I haven't been able to get in touch with you, we have been phone tagging for a week then I got busy.

Heres a battery box that I have been working on. My neighbor growing up had this Army Jeep that was from the Korean war era. It had this cool box on the side that he said was to hold morter crates. It had this cool swing out hold down on it and I remember studying it for hours. I was 12 at the time and wondered what it would take to make one. It was the inspiration for this. A battery box.

So with a flat piece of 18 gauge, 1/4" OD tubing, 3/16" stainless rod, cool dies and an accurate brake I came up with this.

3 piece a, scratch built hinge. Not done yet, have some tig welding and sanding to do. Oh and a stud hold down.

All dimple died, now to work on the swing out hold down.

Template the cap, a bend here, a bend there. 2 scratch built hinges.

I should have planned it better cause when I got to the bottom I found that it wouldn't hinge correctly unless it was notched. Too late, analyse, over come and recover.

cap flipped out. Came out pretty good.

4 hours, 10 bucks in material and some head scratching to avoid buying a $40 battery tray. It was a good exercise for all. We are having fun doing it.

...to be continued

2 turn quick release hold down done. Painted up and installed. This Baileigh brake works great!!
I can't wait for the next brake project we have lined up.
Custom fuel cell enclosure.

Good design, fab, and speed, love it!

coolwelder62 03-10-2014 05:32 AM

I'm going to put one of these brakes on my 2014 order list.

Vince@Meanstreets 03-10-2014 09:22 AM

You will not regret it. It's a great tool to have. I don't know how many times I have been limited to bending cause it was impossible on the conventional benders.

As I was going through my wishlist put together while up at Mark Gerish's Academy for the Art of Metal shaping and shopping on Baleigh's website I figured I would hijack the Magnetic Brake thread for a second for another kick ass Baleigh machine I used while there...
http://i696.photobucket.com/albums/v...pscf2a4be1.jpg

About a year ago I bought a Baleigh BR-18E-24 Power bead roller and have fudged my way through a few projects (thus taking the metal shaping classes to learn the right way :snapout: ) and I got to use this bad boy. The BR-16E-36!!! I rolled out the sheet metal door panel in the pic on day #2 and felt like a superhero! After coming back home and using mine again I'm realizing how freaking nice that machine was!

I need to finish some more cars so I can buy more tools!! :G-Dub:

just knowing how the metal will react when you impose your will on it is an art of its own. nice work on that piece. thats a great machine.

This thing works awesome for when I make my Lexan scoops. Built one today for a guy in Jersey and used the new brake for the first time with Lexan. It did a great job with it, in fact better than the old brake I used to bend Lexan. This is 3/16" Lexan.
