Pro Touring Car Owners.....

How many of you could jump in your car right now and drive it 100 to 200 miles with few worries? Assuming gas is available and no weather issues.

AMSOILGUY 04-24-2014 06:39 PM

 negative but ask again a different day.

GregWeld 04-24-2014 06:47 PM

If you can't drive it 1000's of miles -- you suck as a car builder.....

camcojb 04-24-2014 07:00 PM

I can't right now, but hope to in the future.

James OLC 04-24-2014 07:05 PM

Have gas in the car and wipers... No worries.
(Except the car's in North Carolina)...

How many are daring (and/or stupid) enough to drive a couple hundred miles to a track and back though, without a trailer?

Four letter word starts with S ends in curb, ditch, parked car, etc.

bret 04-24-2014 09:25 PM

Anywhere, anytime, any distance, any weather...like a really fast rental. If you can't, you're not doing it right.

I drove my now sold '68 Camaro up to Seattle and back to SoCal staying (not entirely successfully) ahead of a couple of winter storms. I had all weather Michelins on it, but it gets exciting when you're wondering if you'll get through the mountain passes in northern California and southern Oregon on the I5 before they require chains.

Now that mine has reached a reliable driver and racer, this is my next step. In fact I was going to drive it 3 hours to Lincoln NE to race it this Sunday as a first test, but severe weather in that area spooked me out of it.

I raced it in the rain last weekend so that isn't a huge issue, I'm just not that excited about driving 3 hours one way to race in the rain.

I can't think of a reason mechanically to not drive it a long distance to an event, but will probably trailer it to St Louis for USCA because of the family, dogs etc that will be going with. If it was just me, I'd take the car alone.

dale68z 04-24-2014 09:40 PM

Next weekend Tom and I will be driving to Fontana for Speed Ventures at Auto Club.

I will be bringing a trailer. The car we are tracking will be pulling the 4x6 trailer. The trailer will have fuel, Extra tires, easyup, and our clothes.

So, basically if I have the time and the trip is interesting enough. I have no issues driving either my 68 or 71 anywhere.

Vegas69 04-24-2014 09:41 PM

I drove mine to 25+ autocrosses, one road race, and the Optima Challenge. Plenty of desert hail Mary's and 7500 street miles. Car failed me once when I sheared a distributor gear cruising. With a big block chevy by the way.

With that being said, I'd trailer for road racing by choice. I just don't enjoy problems that can be avoided.

I stayed overnight in Dunsmir, CA coming back from Sears Point in '94 driving my '94 1LE Camaro......woke up to 6" of snow on the ground - Goodyear Eagle's aren't the best snow tire.

Winner.

But...there's two questions here I think. 200 miles on the street? Sure if that's your plan.

To the track? Bring a trailer.

I just had to say it before I buy a trailer sometime and end up like Todd, or Ron (hopefully sometime soon). It's nice to be able to drive to an event and back without a trailer, but the reality is, we're beating on some of these cars so hard that parts are going to fail eventually, and not all of those parts failures can be avoided with preventative maintenance. I've broken stuff at the track 150 miles from home that couldn't be fixed with the tools in my trunk. It wasn't fun.

Done it.

Won't do it again. At least not without a chase truck.

Sieg, you sh!t starter.

Oh, and Todd... gimme a couple months. :D

Mkelcy 04-24-2014 10:52 PM

And on the original question, after 10+ years of building this thing ('68 Camaro) alignment on Tuesday (set pinion angle, align 3 link rear to car, align front end) and place insurance, it's on the road - maybe not 1,000 miles right off the bat, but soon.

And only folks here would appreciate what a thrill it was today (after about 3 years of having the engine running on a minimal fuel load) to put 5 gallons of gas in the tank and see the fuel gauge move.

NEW QUESTION:

How many people drive their 1960's chase truck 5,000 miles?

You know, you and Ron and I should go in on a trailer so when we go to track days we can always tow either of our Camaros or your chase truck home if they break.

yep, f*** boats. Nothing sucks more than not tracking hard cause you know you gotta get home and breaking cause you did.

I drove my Nova to Texas and back with 6 people in it. Hit snow on the Grapevine. Good times.

Having said all that...

These days, most of the time, most of my cars get trailered because of convenience. Now we do this as a business so the "luxury" of getting an extra day or two of fun road time is rare.

But...we drove Sharon's GTO convertible from Pleasanton to Ft. Worth last fall on the Goodguys tour [2000 miles]...Greg drove our 66 Chevelle to the Texas USCA race last month, raced it, and drove it home [1400 miles round trip]...Kyle has that same Chevelle at the Atlanta Super Summit event this weekend [900 miles round trip]...and Danny and Mike have our 2010 supercharged Camaro at the Kissimmee Goodguys event this weekend [2000 miles round trip].

I can't wait to see our fuel bill next month.

Trailering to a race is smart and safe.

Like that is what we all strive for :)

barrrf 04-25-2014 09:54 AM

I still have some more "tinkering" to do before Im driving great distances without "worrying about anything".

I mean, Im only worried now because I didn't build motor that's in it. I don't know if it was done right. Ect Ect.

But if someone asked me Id roll it on a long road trip - with headphones. ProTouring? Not quite there yet.....

Me. :) I've done it twice to the FW GG shows, if you count those. Working on plans to hit a track 2 hours away soon!

Minor problems both trips, but nothing that couldn't survive the drive. I do carry a big bag of tools as insurance though. ;)

Best thing I carry ------ with not so much as a spare tire in the car --- CELL PHONE and AAA CARD. LOL

You just need to add a cell phone charger with car and wall adapters to the list!

At last count 24 tracks through 27 states...

But I don't think there is anything wrong (and a whole lot right) with trailering it to the track. There's nothing fun about being far from home with a broken pile...

That being said... the trailer hitch is going back on the car for the summer and the coffin will be back on the road starting in Road America...

MaxHarvard 04-25-2014 10:37 AM

No problem here. Even drove it in the snow.

One of the things I had Eric add was a cigarette lighter socket to the car up under the dash so that I could plug in a charger. On the trip to Fort Worth, I used the GPS and listened to Sirius/XM the whole way which completely drained the battery in the fall! This worked perfectly during the spring trip...

Um, er. Makes complete sense in my head. :)

I left out a detail... I was using the GPS in my phone and listening to Sirius via Bluetooth through the car stereo. 3 hours of that killed the battery in the phone, not the car. ;) That's what I get for trying to write a message while busy at work!

I had yah Bryan. Greg just has too many balls in the air to focus! Plus, it took him so long to use the multi-quote, I'm not sure he knows you can stream music and use the GPS in a phone all at the same time! :bigun2: :underchair:
