EFI Conversion Question
Ok here's my question, I have a 69 SS Camaro with a small block that I would like to convert it EFI. I have an Edelbrock Pro Flo but now I find out that I should upgrade it to the Pro Flo2 at a cost of 2000.00+. Holley, Atomic and Fast all have their TBI systems for about the same price. What would be the best choice?

I would call all the companys you are interested In and see who calls back and how long it takes, It doesn't matter who's product you buy if there customer service sux! JMHO,, I do have a holly hp setup and there guys are pretty dam good for service.

I'm leaning towards the Holley EFI, they've been around the longest and I've heard a lot of good things about their system. I'll sell the Pro Flo first

I would think that you could re-use your EFI hardware and just use a retrofit kit such as this Fast system for $922:

I emailed the FAST tech line about and this is what they wrote back;
Their system controls timing and the 302000 does not. You would have to use our EZ EFI 2.0. I would also need pictures of the sensors like TPS and the IAC to know which ones they are. Also what distributor are you using? Our kit requires a simple 2 wire and ignition box to control timing. There is more to it than just plugging it right up. Thanks, Jonathan |

A few years back I went to my local speed shop and asked about fuel injection and they recommended Edelbrock's Pro Flo system and said they thought it was the best at that time. Fast forward to today and they tell me the Atomic EFI is the best now as it is very easy to set up compared to the Pro Flo.
I would rather go with the Pro Flo because it's a multi port system and I already own it. I'm not an EFI expert as far as setting one up so that is why I ask for advice. Finding someone who has installed a Pro Flo is next to impossible but I did find one person who has the system installed and he said it's been on his car for years and has had no problems with it. Locally, no luck with any Pro Flos installed on cars. My goal is to have a sweet 69 Camaro I could drive everyday as any modern car. Keep the advice coming not just for me but all of us who has EFI questions |
Stick with the multiport. A TBI is just an electronic carb. A well tuned multiport will run circles around any TBI.
The original Pro Flo was nothing more than a converted GM/Motorola ECM, not very capable by todays standards. Just add an Accel, FAST, Holley or similar electronics. You'll be glad you did. |

These are the things they don't tell you about. There are base tunes and prompts etc but there will still be some trial and error on your part regardless. |
I was also wondering if you could use a Holley Terminator or Dominator ECU and Holley wiring harnesses to replace the Edelbrock Pro Flo harness and ecm & chip??

FWIW, I am in the process of converting my Holley TBI to a HP MPFI full sequential system on my 327 SBC. I have not driven it a lot yet, but I see a significant difference in smoothness and drivability. Economy should be better as well. So I recommend the MPFFI over a TBI.

You can use any EFI that will use a cam reference as it's only Sequential Fuel Injection input.
We have a customer running the ProFlo. I wouldn't say it's perfect.. and you do have to send the PROM to Edelbrock to be flashed. I'm not sure if his is a ProFlo2. I don't think so, it was on a shelf for 11 years before it made its way to the car. Anyway. That's the annoying part. Sending the prom back. If you don't think you'll be tweaking on it a lot, then it's just fine. It does add a lot of drivability to the car. And there are handheld tuners that come with the kit, but I don't know how good they are. If all you're looking to do is go to EFI, then it is not a bad option. If you need all the bells and whistles, the ProFlo does not have them. But it is very easy to install. And is SFI.. though I think it's bank to bank style. So it's sort of sequential. I think it fires left and right banks as a whole... if you look at it, it's basically a 3rd gen Camaro set up. It uses all 3rd gen sensors and a PROM. And they all ran batch fire (bank to bank). So it's not necessarily a whole bunch more fuel efficient.. but it's is EFI and has the added benefits of such. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
