Question for a project???
Ok so I've had this bug for the last 20 plus years to build an old Datsun 240Z. My uncle and cousin used to own a Z shop in Cali for years and built some cool cars. One summer my uncle brought the 71 240Z with a SBC and 4spd to Chicago, wow what a cool car. We took it to the grove and race it all night, it was a high 12 sec car, fun fun fun!!!
Ok now I have a chance to get one from my cousin for cheap and it is very clean from Cali. Cool right? Well now I have another thought, what about a Porsche 944??? I redid one for a guy years ago and always thought it was a cool car as well? You can get a really clean 944 for under 4K and REALLY clean for 6-7K. I'm thinking LS in either car? Yes I'm still working on my Camaro but if I want the 240Z I have to pull the trigger very soon as he has to get rid of the 10 or so he still has. So it wouldn't be anything I would be building until next year at the earliest. So if you had to build either one of these what would you build and why?? :thankyou: |
that porsche will never look as cool as the 240Z...
ask me how I know.. https://farm7.staticflickr.com/6093/...d21f53ea_b.jpg im tellin ya.. do the Z.. and just FYI.. the Zs prices are starting to go up retardedly.. so if you can get one cheap.. do it.. and if you get tired of it youll get your money back more likely than that tom sellek mobile.. |
I think you've seen my buddy's Z being built at Kuhnhausen Metal Concepts on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/KuhnhausenMetalConceptsLLC
Back in my AutoX days in the early 80's a friend was running a 240Z with a 327 transplant. It worked well all things considered. I like 944's too but.........parts pricing vs Z? Aftermarket component selection vs Z? From a uniqueness perspective I don't see a lot of either of them on the road or hiding elsewhere. I'd have to say I see more Z's than 944's though. From a saleability standpoint I'd have to say the Z would win easily. |
I'd get both, if $$$ and space are no issue. The z and 944 are my favorite cars.
|
Go for the 240Z. Iconic car that will be great with a LS.
|
I'm gonna go the other way Rick. 240s are very cool and there's no wrong answer, but I think the late 944s handle just a bit better IMHO. I was out at Laguna Seca a week ago and both were on the track. Off camber turn and you could see the 944 carry more speed and keep the outside tire flatter. Could've been the difference between the two car's set ups, could've been the platform...who knows...but I liked it better.
Cool factor? That's a toss up. They're both awesome! I've thought about this: http://www.renegadehybrids.com/ (click on the 944 link at the top) ...but the People's Republic would never let me register it! I hope you do this buddy  P.S. I prefer the later model 944s personally. |
Go with the 240, you will have less to modify for an LS. Plus it sounds like you may get a better deal on it.
As far as Porsche..... I'd love to do a 928 LS twin turbo. |
Is there an option C: None of the Above?
:hello: |

Had an instructor in front of me years ago in a Z and he lost it trying to lose me. I do like the 928 idea though. Those cars have always had a soft spot in my heart for them. |

Pretty car...
...but it sounds like an alien spaceship! |
I'm leaning towards the Z car. However, I wouldn't do an LS swap. I'd go with a turbo 4.2 to keep with the inline engine theme. That's just me though.

Buddy of mine has a 240z hes doing an LS swap in. Soon I hope. I have his 6cyl4spd on my side yard in my awning for sale, pretty clean, but the LS is the same or lighter....but waaaaaaay better.
And ya, a 944 with an LS or a 928 with an LS or a Miata with an LS or an S2000 with an LS and on and on and on..... putanlsinanything.com......i gotta buy that domain lol |
Rick, Chris Porter can give you the ins and outs of an LS install in the Porsche

I like the Z all the way.
|
Z car all the way. Especially if its able to be bought cheap. Honestly, I think there is a much bigger market for resale with the Z also.
Bitchin little cars  |

A full one megawatt! |
Trailblazer 4.2, Rick. It shares a lot of LSx architecture but in an inline 6 configuration.

Z, no contest. I had one for like two weeks back in the '90s, and always wanted to put a V8 in one, but never did. You do the weight math, though, and the advantage of the V8, especially a 350, is zilch. I saw somewhere that the shipping weight of my Ferd X302 was like 385 pounds, however, which beats some 4-bangers.
Bring back the straight six--BMW says it's a good idea! |
I would do the 944, but the Z will be much easier
|
z for sure, love those cars.
|
Get the Z, besides the price advantages it has family history attached to it.
Even when they're ugly they are cool. This Z was at the local autocross and was embarrassing 90% of the shiny cars there. Definitely had some motor and a well tuned suspension. http://www.smugmug.com/photos/i-W4Nr...-W4Nr4T6-L.jpg http://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-n...-nmhBZgH-L.jpg |
^^^^ cool pictures Sieg thanks!!
As for which car it WILL be the Z for a few reasons. First it's almost free other then the shipping which won't be that bad. Second I may get two of them from him one to mess with and one to sell here in the Midwest as they are soooo clean. For what I can buy a 944 for I will have the Z here and could have an engine it and running so it makes the decision much easier plus after looking around the Z will look way cooler in the end. So now that I have the bug to do the Z anyone want to buy a Camaro??  Oh and I'm not kidding, I will be painting the Camaro and putting it up for sale! |
I just saw this thread and read through the entire thing and all i kept saying to myself. Rick do you actually have time to take on another project. Then I saw you were going to sell the 2nd gen. Good decision when you have kids one project is tuff let alone 2.
ps Come over and get my LS Mock up block and trans so we can stuff it in the "Z". http://garagescene.net/gallery3/var/...Datsun%202.jpg http://garagescene.net/gallery3/var/...cts/Datsun.jpg Quote:
