Ford Nine Inch Aluminum Center Section???

What are your thoughts on this rear end housing?? Looks cool but???

Just remember that Aluminum has "durability issues". It should be used where servicing it is regular and ongoing (such as a race car)... and used where to win is everything - which means shaving weight for performance gains.

I ran a Strange aluminum pumpkin on my street driven '56 Nomad. It was a waste of money but it looked cool.

waynieZ 10-25-2014 09:24 AM

It is sweet looking! It must have a big price bump?

Rick, I'm uneducated but I don't see why this would any different than an aluminum engine block or aluminum transmission case. Yeah, I guess not quite as strong as steel, but I don't see why it would be a problem. I think I saw this same rear on Ebay. I don't recall it being too expensive.

Greg what are your thoughts on the bolt in axles? It's definitely a cool factor!!

Yes I would think the same thing but not sure about the bolt in axles??
And yes I found it on eBay.

Oh I think that rear end is bad ass! I just question some of the "all out race" stuff going into street cars. If it's a purpose built track car -- hell yeah. But for the street -- aluminum stuff can have issues that don't come up on the track because they're rebuilt and inspected all the time etc and you pay a lot of money extra for "kool" and then it becomes a problem. For street stuff I like things that are reliable and leak free etc. I don't know anything about that particular rear end - and it may be the perfect piece for the application.

For what it's worth.. I know guys that run alum 3rd members (not housings)on the street for years with no issues. I ran one in my red Camaro for 7 years and beat the hell out of it and never had a proplem. Yes i did remove it for inspection or gear changes and it always looked great .

That is a bad ass peice

Vince@Meanstreets 10-26-2014 11:22 PM

after chopping, squaring axle housings for so long....Im loving the bolt in axle tubes.

DBasher 10-26-2014 11:31 PM

Vince where are you buying the housing ends? Moser, Currie? I picked up another housing that needs to be cut down and I need to research what ends to get for the brake set up I now have.

Thanks
Dan

Go down to Fife... and talk with the boys at Art Morrison. They stock/sell Wilwood... and rear ends - and have all the jigs etc.

Chevy bolt pattern ends. Flush mount so you can use your parking brake bracket as a retainer.

I like the idea but the only thing I am thinking is you would have to make sure it would work with your rear end setup. it looks like it's aluminum where my rear end brackets are welded on and that could be a pain.

they feature mild steel plates that bolt to the housing then you weld your brackets to them.

The rear end above doesn't have any specs in the photo. Here is the company. http://speedmaster79.com/tds/third-member/ perhaps someone in the thread knows this company. I suspect the casting is made overseas.

^^^^ Yes Jeff, I believe you are correct, but Australia? Well at least that's where the parent company is from according to their web site.

Also another interesting their US company is ProComp who sells ALOT of cheap knock off parts on flebay! You name it and they sell it, I believe they are the ones selling the fake Persision EFI manifolds?? Not sure on that one but I think I saw the ProComp name on them before.

Also on their web site the housing is $400 and axle tubes are $80 so a few bucks less then flebay.

Gambit 10-28-2014 11:24 AM

If that's procomp in Australia be very wary. They don't have a good reputation here. Never personally used their items & can't say I would. I'd rather spend a bit extra upfront than replacing new parts

Vince@Meanstreets 10-28-2014 12:10 PM

that would explain the low cost....looks cast.

Tell me though, what would one pay for a billet aluminum one made in the US??

Like everything else these days....quality control should be the concern, not the PoO
