1964 Fairlane- Smith Hot Rods
I have been searching for years for a '64 Fairlane post sedan and finally found one I could not live without. I found this car cruising Craigslist one night and was on a plane heading to Spokane days later to seal the deal. This car is unreal. It was bought an owned by the same guy for 49 years and only has 41k miles on the clock. Its an original paint car with a 260/auto./8 inch combo. It runs and drives so well, it'll almost be a shame to rip it apart and give it teeth..............but what fun would that be?
Plans: -Thunderbolt-esque outer look - tear drop hood, glass bumpers, and screened off inner lamps etc. -Will probably be either black with gold accents or Super Sonic blue with matte gray accents -Rod and Custom Motorsports front suspension- QA1 coil overs, Wilwood brakes, manual rack, sway bar - molded engine bay- smooth firewall - wheels are undecided but will be 17s for street parties and Sander 3 piece wheels for strip duty - 9 inch with all the Caltrac gear-4.10s or 4.33s,aluminum chunk, locker -cage will be a jungle gym and head into the engine bay to the radiator support - new Ford Racing Boss 302 block, Eagle 4340 347 stroker, CHI 3v CNC'd 208s, Daugherty Racing Cam, CHI intake, Jesel rockers, 850 billet Holley by me, al MSD juice and a Digital 6, Blue Thunder valve covers, Compression will be 13:1 and will run on E85. -Magnum T56, alloy flywheel, Mcleod Street Twin or Centerforce Dual Friction - aluminum driveshaft with 1350s My goal is to land somewhere around 2600 lbs and run 10.50s on MT 275 drag radials. This car is pretty light and should be very crisp with 600 HP. Here we go again right?! http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...psf0a4c890.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...pscf43d839.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...psd138c35a.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps6ccc838c.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps3356e42a.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...pscfe3b283.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps5226405e.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps1667c0b1.jpg [URL=http://s394.photobucket.com/user/silverback427/media/64bolt10_zps5d5d184d.jpg.html][IMG] Sno Boss!!!!!!! http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps5d5d184d.jpg |
nice find!!!!
A-body gone? |
Yeah she's all gone. Left for the Hawaiian islands a couple weeks ago. I miss it already.
|
This is going to be so cool, can't wait to see you get it going Dave!!
|
Thanks Rick! I've been wanting to build this car for many many years.
|
That will be a very cool build, congrats on the great find!!
|
Wow! Great car!
Look forward to the build. |
Good find--I like that car. Better still, it's not a Camaro! One mustn't forget the value of the Holman-Moody '64 with all the YouTube videos, however--it's evolution at work: http://www.holmanmoody.com/images/Fairlane2.jpg.

Killer car!
|
FE that car is just unreal. I remember you posting that before and was in awe then. It's a car that I feel is just proportioned perfectly. I love them. Thanks for posting.
|
That is one clean Fairlane! Love the JC Penny spare tire.
Best of luck with the build! |
Cool!

The car went under the knife this weekend. Ian and I cut the shock towers, front aprons, fender supports, strut rod boxes, and the firewall out. The RC Motorsports front end goes in like any conventional Mustang II system. We will need to remove the fin type edge off of the tops of the rails to accomodate the crossmember caps but that's pretty simple. I left the rear section of the aprons in tact so I could keep the hood hinge locations and geometry correct. I will be making a new firewall and front aprons once my beadroller shows up and I'm happy with the suspension. We will also be bending and installing two 1.75" bars from the knee knocker forward to the front ends of the rails to add the much needed rigidity. These cars are very, very soft and thin. I can pick up the entire nose myself and walk it around the shop like a wheelbarrow.

No rest for the wicked!! :) Not wasting any time on this one - once again! Look forward to seeing it come together!
|
I am getting all googly eyed :D
I see your sig line now states 408 Dave? |
Thanks guys. We are getting it on with this car.
Yeah I bought a 408 from a buddy last month. It's a simple one. All 4340 Eagle, good early block, girdle and studs, Isky solid roller, Victor Jr. heads, Super Victor etc etc. Should make 550+. it went 10.1 in a 2600 lb Fox with a glide so it should work. I'm excited. |
Jebus
That's a nice ride
|
That's a cool little build so far. Will be keeping an eye on this one.
|
Those shock towers will be missed by no one.
|
Yeah they're far worse built than I though. Nothing like 14 spot welded to 20 with zero seam seal or corrosion protection. The build standard and geometry is a joke. I can't wait to drive it with the new gear.
|
Big day yesterday. Stabbed the 408 in with the Tremec behind it. The trans is an MMR900 which is supposed to be some high zoot deal. We'll see. The scattershield is a McLeod and the clutch an RXT from the same folks. We ended up making a pretty good size hole for the tans but it looks like the tunnel will barely fit the driveshaft so I think the major surgery is over.

No big brakes for this car. I'm running a 15 inch wheel and trying to keep this thing a featherweight. http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...psjqhlnafd.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...psktqx63xv.jpg http://i394.photobucket.com/albums/p...psec0qlu0y.jpg I'm really impressed with the R&C Motorsports stuff. Everything went together perfectly and the quality of components is outstanding. I'll be making new inner fenders and a firewall once the bead roller shows up. More to come! |
Nice work!
|
Thanks Jar. It's been a really fun project so far. Now header mania begins. Could be a real pain figuiring it out. Sounds like most guys are having good luck with Headman stuff so I'll try that first.
|
Nice car, I love the body style and you've got some sweet parts to go with it. It's going to be interesting.
|
Slow your roll down there player! You're going to build 2 cars before I get one done!  Looks great Dave! I'll come by and check it out!
|
Aw come on Brent. Get your magic pants on and get that Chevy done son! My goal is Vegas 2016 as I think is yours as well. Do I smell a drag race on Convention Center drive coming?
|
Straight from Mr. Ben Hermance. Dude's a treat to work with. Now we have a road map. I like the way he rendered the oil cooler in the bumper and the boom tubes. Color will be Supersonic Blue.

Looks BadA.. Dave
Are you going with Glass Bumpers? We purchased the Crites units for my Daughters 63, they are real nice quality. May I ask what brand those Valve covers are, they look sick! I am like a little kid (but I am 59) every time I get an email about this build. Thanks, Joe |
Thanks Joe! The valve covers are from Blue Thunder and are their competition style units. I think they're out of business now but I saw these pop up on eBay and snagged them.
Yes on the bumpers and hood. Those are coming from Crites. Their glass is pretty good quality and fits well. I'll glass in an aluminum brace into the front cover and mount the oil cooler to it, then run a pair of -10s under the rad support and to the engine. Thanks for your support on this one. Sometimes I really need it. |
Dave,
Any updates? I am looking for inspiration, i've been block sanding :hairpullout: Joe |
any updates bro
|
Yeah Dave, whats up?
I want to see what you are doing to the back half??? Ford guys need to know :-) |
What's up dude! Well after measuring and figuring and talking and...... we decided it'll just be better to build our own 4 link system for the rear. I like the one Rod and Custom Motorsports has, but it doesn't allow for the steam rollers we want to run. I also don't like the shear tension placed on the two heims they run. These cars have big rockers with good metal in them so we'll build a rear cross member and tie the cage into all of it. It'll be widely adjustable, sit low, and work perfectly on the street, strip, and turns. Gonna run a 305 rear tire and a 235 up front on an 18 inch wheel.
I sold the 408 and am looking at some other options. Coyotes, pushrod Boss 302s etc. Not sure yet. |
^ As long as you keep a ford in a ford, all will be right with the world. Badass build so far.
|
oh it'll definitely be an oval in it. Been looking at Whipple charged Coyote builds. They're really cool and look bitchin.
|
You didn't happen to keep the Blu Thunder valve covers? :bump:
|
you know I did! lol. Those are on the wall waiting to make something look cool.
|
.....and then the wheels showed up! We went to ADV1 for the wheels on this car and selected their Advanced Series 3 piece wheel with an extreme rear concave profile. They're designed for 6 piston Wilwoods and are 18x7 and 19x12.5 out back. Rear tire is a 345/25/19- not sure on front heights yet so I'll just be using my roller 235/40/18s for now.
Dealing with ADV1 was an absolute breeze and their staff is ultra professional from deign, to logistics. The wheels feature all Ti hardware and the level of detail is unreal. I have looked over each wheel closely and cannot find a flaw. Can't wait to have these shoved under that little car soon!
