HPI Customs - 71 Challenger "The Contender"

HPI Customs is proud to reveal our render for our SEMA 2015 car, we like to call her "The Contender".
She'll boast a Vortech supercharged 426 among a grocery list of other modifications and upgrades.

More to come as this build evolves and takes shape.

Good luck guys! Looks like it's going to be great.

tones2SS 01-09-2015 04:50 PM

That is going to be a nice build. Looking forward to seeing it take shape.
The '70/'71 Challenger is one of my favorite muscle cars.

MoparCar 01-10-2015 08:21 AM

Looks awesome. I'll be following this one. Any specs yet? Engine, frame/suspension? I'd guess to get it that low you'll be doing a Roadster Shop or similar frame?

Ron in SoCal 01-10-2015 02:58 PM

Nice render Tyler. When you get some time, post up a proper build thread?

I know you can do it :D

Perhaps 707hp of supercharged Mopar goodness on the way?

:thankyou:

Correct, we're using the Control Freaks suspension.

Can you guys tell me more about the taillight setup looks really sweet

Once we start fabricating that part of the car, we can for sure let you know on some details as its currently just a render.

HPIcustoms 01-30-2015 01:00 PM

Christmas in January

So, we got a nice a surprise yesterday in the form of four large boxes for the Challenger. Front fenders, door skins and hinges.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psofugsnfd.jpg

HPIcustoms 02-02-2015 09:04 AM

More boxes came in today for the Challenger build!

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...pszwhbg9mm.jpg

HPIcustoms 02-05-2015 09:10 AM

Time to start cutting the Challenger apart for installment of new door skins, wider rear quarters, new fenders and more.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psrzrixv6i.jpg

Narrow quarters? We ain't got time for that at HPI Customs! One down, one more quarter to go.
http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psobvewzzc.jpg

HPIcustoms 02-09-2015 10:01 AM

Couple updates on the Challenger. Hung the new fenders into place, and amazingly... They fit pretty damn good for some reproduction fenders. Anyone who's ever done panel replacement knows the struggle of them fitting out of the box.

HPIcustoms 02-10-2015 11:32 AM

Some care packages arrived yesterday from BAER Brakes, it was like Christmas.
So today we mocked the front brakes. Monster 14" drilled and slotted discs with monster 6 piston calipers.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psffgcytiy.jpg

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psdqpzhuuh.jpg

HPIcustoms 02-19-2015 03:02 PM

The HEMI arrived for the '71 Challenger, a 392 6.4L which will of course have our personal touches for more horsepower.

Why a 392 and not the 426 that we had mentioned before? Well, no matter what MOPAR tells you, the 426 is NOT available to anyone... Which they will also not tell you till a lot of telephone tag and hair pulling to get the answer out of them. So, we have to give a HUGE shout out and THANK YOU to Cleveland Power and Performance for yet ANOTHER clean, pristine engine for one of our builds. If you need anything from them, be sure to check them out and tell them HPI Customs from Canada sent you.

Only asking because i want to learn to evaluate what im looking at. I weld ok (far from great!!) and love to learn about it and this just looked like what i wrote to me.... Maybe its the picture, maybe its ok too!!!

To me it looks like i could wack it off and seperate them if i got at it motivated... So i tought about the pressure of the roadworks.

Thanks for the info, and awesome job on that build!

As someone who is a red seal certified fabricator there is nothing wrong with that weld. Yes it looks like a bunch of tack welds stacked, which I'm positive it is. If you tack and don't let the metal cool beyond "the orange state "as it cools then move and hit it again you will achieve a good strong weld. Although a horizontal weld is ideal sometimes you have no choice but to weld out of position. This is one way of doing it.
Cheers
Keep up the good work HPI

HPIcustoms 02-20-2015 08:58 AM

This part/ weld is NOT an HPI Customs welding or fab job. This is the rad cradle that was used on the car from another company. The weld is called a "whip", just to clarify all of our welds are done properly, especially when its a structural integrity part.

Drivers quarter cut out and the passenger quarter has been widened. Nothing crazy, just a nice subtle change that still flows nice with the body line. Still some minor tweaking left.

Love the slight fender widening, it's noticeable but not too much!

HPIcustoms 03-13-2015 08:19 AM

So, just to replicate how we felt yesterday when this package arrived, it was something like this: :ups:

The supercharger for the 392 HEMI showed up late yesterday. I'll be sure to post a photo once we have it all unpacked and assembled.

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...psyze83uz3.jpg

http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/...pseueyk9w2.jpg

And a better shot of the front assembly. Its a Control Freaks bolt in kit, but we're now going a different route, no details yet as its gonna be top secret along with the rear end, besides the teaser shots I previously posted. So those updates will follow once its all been done, stay tuned for that.

Any hints as to the new secret front suspension? I'm building a 71 Challenger also and would be interested in knowing what you'll be doing? Your own design, Roadstershop, DSE X-Gen? You're not going to keep this a secret for a year now are ya.....? 😄
