I have not been this in love with a car since "Impression". I can't wait too see it in person. Thank you Al!

I would say the Mulholland Speedster is a close second to to this one.

NOPANTS68 01-25-2015 11:08 AM

Whoa. Now that's a car

It's very similar (to me) to the Black Pearl he did... and similar to the Speedster you mentioned and similar to the car Rob Ida has in his shop... I guess these art deco French styles are the trend right now.

(I probably should have led off with I love them all! Amazing style and metalwork...beautiful pieces of sculpture!)

Marcel's sure can shape metal!

Boss 5.0 01-25-2015 01:48 PM

That car is flat out incredible. The only thing I didn't like about the Pearl is the gold trim, didn't do it for me. Glad to see this one has chrome.

It has some of the ques that Black Pearl has, but this car is much more Delahaye to me. The Mulholland Speedster is a completely different feel, but just as incredible in craftmanship.

Who built this one?
My WDRDD question was asking what does Rick Dore do. Looking over his website it appears he's more of a project manager than a builder, definitely has a cool style.

Who won the AMBR? I'm guessing the boys from Spokane didn't....

Vince@Meanstreets 01-25-2015 04:03 PM

love those style builds.

Growing up my circle of friends and I would build models and we call the draggers. There was an early bugs bunny cartoon that had a street scene with them. Super low and you couldn't see the back wheels.

Troy Ladd aka Hollywood Hotrods. Winner has not been annouced yet that I know of.

DBasher 01-25-2015 05:17 PM

Wow! Good to see Troy and the gang getting in over their head, car looks fantastic!

Rick Dore is definitely more of the general contractor/ designer of the project. To my knowledge he doesn't actually build anything himself. He does have an eye though, most cars he is a part of are usually pretty amazing.

GregWeld 01-25-2015 08:18 PM

The Alloway Roadster (flamed of course!) won AMBR this

year.http://www.hotrod.com/news/2015-amer...ders/#photo-02

Brewtal66 01-25-2015 09:04 PM

My buddy did a lot of the mechanical work on this car. He said this car hauls ass as its LS powered. I want to say he told me it was an LS3.

Ketzer 01-25-2015 09:15 PM

Just seeing pictures, I like the car Pinkees did and then the Iron Hills Hotrods '36 a close second...

One of the biggest reasons we chose not to enter AMBR judging with the '33 was A) that was never the intent B) Brizio won the year before meaning there's no way he's winning two years in a row

I agree with you Al - there were several other entries that weren't nearly so 80's and ordinary (not that an Alloway is ordinary in build quality). But WTF - Technically last years winner isn't even a Roadster.... so apparently there is no figuring this out.

Could be some politics involved since he was inducted into the hall of fame at the show.

ironworks 01-26-2015 08:11 AM

Everyone I talked with thought the same as me that not one car stood out above the others. So it may have just come down to style and choice that they are trying to promote now days. That Alloway car is cool and yes it's typical Alloway, but he does build cool stuff if you like his style and so does Roy with the Mumford Roadster and Wes with his Phaeton.

I'm just glad to see a deserving car win and not the car with the most insane display win the prize that is Super Duper Ugly.

NOPANTS68 01-26-2015 08:17 AM

While I think Alloways car is beautiful, I feel like he's built that car a dozen times. Same wheels, same flames, same gingerbread etc. etc. I'd own it but there's nothing outstanding about it compared to some of the other contenders. That Nickel 3 duece is the a good glimpse of the future of hot ridding IMO. Rare engine, gold race style wheels, stainless roof and misc. pieces. I'm a huge Steve Moal fan and this car reminds me of some of the wonderful things that he dreams up.

I showed our '32 years ago in SF, Sac, and Portland and was ultimately so turned off by the indoor show scene I swore I'd never do it again. Watching two dozen wealthy old guys argue about who's half million dollar loss deserves a plastic trophy more was pathetic.

My exact thoughts - and thus the S S D D comment about the Hetfield/Dore build. Been there - done that look and feel. Beautiful yes - craftsmanship over the top - check... but it's certainly not "new" anymore. It's like looking at a Moal car with dimple die work.... But then again - it's real hard to come up with something that hasn't been done in the hot rod world. When I looked at all the cars I was looking for what's going FORWARD... without just being "dare to be different" which to me doesn't mean it's cool or you'd want to drive it. EVERYONE that enters these has over the top quality... so to me - that's not an issue.

I would cite the Ring Brothers Chevelle as something that's going "forward"... and I'd want to drive it - and it would win any show it entered and it would have a crowd around it anywhere it went. The interior being the stand out theme there. To me - that's the kind of thing I want to see at a car show. Something you just don't see - but isn't weird...

I know how I'd judge the AMBR cars..... it's so easy a kindergartner could do it. Which car had the biggest crowd around it all weekend long. That's the clear winner as judged by the hot rodders that attend. All you'd have to do is get an elevated judges stand to see this.... because every time I walked by - there was clearly cars that NOBODY stood around to see. The Alloway was one of them. You could "see" it from 50 feet and dismiss it as another flamed hot rod.

When I saw pics that said this thing was a contender, I thought it was a joke. You can take 250K worth of parts and build a 500K car or a 50K car. This well.............it takes all kinds I guess. No doubting the work and effort, but this screams build as you go and see what you end up with. There is no way they had a rendering to go off of. I hope.

I thought it was "kind of" cool but over all was missing that thing that says "this is the front of the car" and "this is the rear". Kind of like a kids wooden car toy.

Musclerodz 01-26-2015 02:30 PM

Honestly I didn't like the styling of most of the contenders, but that is just me. Of all the choices for me it would have been the slick black one posted above or Pinkee's rivet roadster.

I was going to say but glad you did first. cars shows :bang:
if I had to pick from looks and style I would have gone with the gold hemi powered one. or Troys just because of the level of detail.

I was certain the Rivet Roadster (Pinkee's) had it won... It was the only one there that used fresh color combos to highlight different items on the car. They mixed up gloss and mat finishes... The wheels were custom... there were other one off parts and details... And it had details that made you say "that's cool!".

If you tossed out UGLY -- the green 14" wheel "race car".... and the twin turbo'd abortion... and eliminated the "ordinary" cars like Alloway's - and the nicely done black '34 which was really nice but we've all seen that car a 1100 times.... There were mostly very uninspiring builds on display. We found plenty of really killer cars at the show overall -- but the AMBR thing needs to really pick up the pace because the last couple years have been pretty sad. I mean really -- the little baby blue "almost stock restoration" and The Grass Hopper? Come on --- I built that model when I was 9 and the was half a century ago!

I mean come on -- this is an AMBR entrant?? WTF!

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...-1-640x400.jpg

Can we get more 1960's than this???

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...-1-640x400.jpg

Oh yeah!! That top is real stylin' buddy! REALLY?? Did it fall off something in front of you and land on this car?

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...-1-640x400.jpg

I don't care where this car came from (Stockholm) it's just something that was in the back of a warehouse.... they washed it and brought it to the show. Big Daddy was going to put a glass bubble on it and call it the ZORTNIK or something... LOL

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...-1-640x400.jpg

THESE ARE ALL AS ORDINARY OF A BUNCH OF CARS AS YOU CAN GET..... Super nice to be sure! But so what...

This particular car has an interesting story to it --- and I discussed it with the builder and Steve Moal when we were in Victoria BC last summer for Deuce Days. The owner died 2 weeks before it was completed... a nice and little different - lots of details - looks like something Moal would build but didn't. I like it but it's not an AMBR winner to me....

http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...-1-640x400.jpg

This was a nice car that was caught in the '70's with the wire wheels..... again real ordinary. The kind of car that you'd see at any parking lot show all across the country. It fit between the FUGLY and the ORDINARY.
