69 Z06 Camaro
Hi everyone,
My name is Jeff and I live in So Cal. It's been 20 years or so sense my last car project. I did a replica of an 037 Rally car but took time off after. About 2 years ago I got the bug again and started a Porsche 914 project. It had a LS6 and the suspension from a 996 under it. While working on it one day John (aka Driveability) was casing :_paranoid my area and stopped to check it out. After stopping by a couple more times he made me an offer that I decided to accept. My mind was already drifting toward a Camaro, so as John was picking up the 914 I was dropping off my new project. The plan is a full frame with late model C6 Z06 drive-line. I've had the car for a little over a year now so I will try and get caught up to where I am currently. Byndbad914 is how I came across this site, as he had a 914 project here but there are so many cool builds and ideas that it has become a routine for me come here. The 037 https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3934/...7022aa16_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5610/...7e328e2d_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3946/...9dc8ae4a_o.jpg The 914 https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7445/...00fdb014_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5605/...5c429eb5_o.jpg The Camaro came with extra quarter skins and I figured I would be able to just use those and save as much of the outer shell as possible. I knew I wasn't going to use much of the original car but I really underestimated how bad this car had been tore up. Here is the car when I brought it home. Comments and suggestions are always welcome, either on the thread or PM. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5603/...1421bbb9_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3947/...c0872cc8_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7512/...4004ccdb_o.jpg https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8533/...11311ca8_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3939/...85a47c11_o.jpg And my Orange Coolaide because I see some people here ride. https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3955/...86ce3f12_o.jpg Jeff |
I like your style Jeff. That body isn't so bad, we've all seen worse. It's a perfect starting point for the style of build you're going for. Looks like fun, and so do those previous projects. That's a sweet bike too. Good luck with the project, I'm looking forward to future progress.

Welcome Jeff!
Variety is the spice of life. |
Yep, have some orange (mixed with white) Koolaid up here too!

pretty good start and a nice rear foundation to hold up that transaxle.
welcome to the site. |
btw give me a hollar when you get to the rear track and rear body width dilema.

Thanks for the offer, I'm sure there will something else thou. Jeff |
One of the first things I needed was some kind of frame table/cart. I still had another car I needed in the garage so it had to be mobile, square and adjustable sense the garage floor is not level.
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3951/...b4eb86f1_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7532/...c82e99d8_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3942/...3c50a28d_o.jpg Some tear down pictures. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7514/...fe6e0d0c_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7554/...5a2d8119_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/...92828697_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5614/...ce3de224_o.jpg |
I was able to find the transmission and tube assemble on craigslist but it was missing the rearend. It took more than a few weeks to find one on Ebay. He was asking a couple hundred more then others I had seen but they sell fast. I figured I better just get it. After talking to the guy it ended up being the rearend from this trans. Something he was going to install in his car but needed to sell. Also found a complete rear suspension, seems that everyone uses the front suspension components but not so much the rear.
One of the first things I decided to replace was the rocker panels. They had been shortened for the Pro Street tires and where rusted through in a few areas. https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5608/...e82bcfe0_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7492/...d5ea3cb5_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7468/...7b33b719_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3938/...38f5b0c0_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5604/...2e3d6d7f_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7572/...82d2025b_o.jpg |
Welcome to the site. This sounds like a great build. I'm curious to know how you made your table adjustable as I'll be in the same boat should I ever need to make a frame table.
Thanks |

After much debate I decided to use the stock rear aluminum subframe. Made a jig to hold it in place, got some bends from Art Morrison and started on the frame.

nice work!!

Picked up a new block, :faint: some LS7 heads and Forgeline rims from the Corvette forums and an intake from here. The motor was going to be setback a little more then I was hoping so I made new offset transmission mounts. Pictures show the motor with the offset mounts.
Finding front suspension was harder, seems there is good demand for the C6 suspension. Got some new/setup only front knuckles off Ebay but the guy had drilled the lower ball joint holes, so after getting that mess fixed I ordered new. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7539/...426b7707_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5606/...1f971dc2_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7508/...df459c16_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5612/...e52f3122_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5605/...a09f09d3_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7484/...d3469edc_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7467/...8bcc0bba_o.jpg |

Love this project! From previous project pics I've seen, using the Vette drivetrain sometimes creates a cramped space (floor height, tunnel, etc.) in a first gen Camaro. Just curious if you've looked at that and if it's an issue? Also, is the block new or used?
Keep goin' Jeff! |

Block is new as used motors didn't seem to come up much when I was looking and didn't want to put out the money all at once for a new motor although in the long run it might have been better. BTW enjoy the builds you have going. Jeff |
Front of frame coming together, engine and rack and pinion mounts.
Everything is cell phone pictures so sorry for not being steady enough when taking some of them. https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7552/...37873925_o.jpg https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3950/...ab272a4f_o.jpg https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8122/...9b995b0f_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/...4cbe3c8c_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5600/...3d25a690_o.jpg https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5614/...273144cb_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7537/...1d32aafc_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7529/...bc934d87_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7481/...149f686e_o.jpg https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7515/...113f99e9_o.jpg Jeff |
Damn. Looks good.

Great job on the Camaro, but I really love the 914. Do you have a link to where I can see more pictures of that build?
Andrew |
Very nice work, I will follow this one for sure

I did not have one going when I started it but John has a build thread here. https://lateral-g.net/forums/showthread.php4?t=45044 Give him a nudge on his thread and I will text him for an update. I talked to him a couple weeks ago and he was getting ready to start it. Jeff |
Sweet. I'm looking forward to more pics!
After seeing what you have done so far the starting point of the car doesn't look as rough as I initially thought. You have cut it all away anyhow! |

Picture overload ahead. I didn't plan on replacing the the entire car but the rear panels were cut up and the roof rails were rusted though. Also some cage construction.

Cool project. Good call on the Woodward rack. I dig the Orange Crush, too. I'm more of a blue flavored guy, myself.
