Where to get CA black plates made?
Does anyone know of a company that can make the black CA license plates? I want my current modern plate redone in the black 68 style. Or is it easier to buy some on Ebay and jusr re-register my car with those ones?
Thanks |
You can get black plates from the DMV now. Im 95% sure.

No you cannot buy them at the DMV.
I was on the wait list for that legacy program.... not sure that will actually play out. Does anyone trust the DMV? If you want to do it now, you need to buy some unrestored or restored black plates that are "clear" with the DMV and they will let you reappropriate them. You also need to buy a year correct sticker to put on it. It's a I just did this last year. It all comes down to how much you want to spend for nice plates, or junk plates, and either restore them yourself or have it done. |
I have personally met the person who is in charge of the legacy plate program. It will happen, as long as they get the pre-orders. If we all have a 'gonna do' attitude it will never happen.
I'm not throwing stones, my car still has white plates and the application for my black plates is here on my desk... |

And that is probably why subconsciously you have not filled out that application and gone down to your local DMV. |

Haha! No, you're right. However, all you do is mail it in with a check and then the mail genies bring the plate. It's not like they press the plate for you on the spot at your local purgatory, I mean DMV. They have the guys up in Folsom to do that. I'm dragging my feet because I'm trying to decide whether I want a personalized plate or not. I used to think they were cool, then I thought they were corny, now I kinda want one again. |
If you check out the DMV's facebook page they in the past have listed the amounts sold on the pre sale. I believe the requirement was 7500 for each era plate.
Last I checked the black and yellow were the only ones to exceed the requirement at something like 12-13k sold. If I remember correct they will start making them in May. |

There is a guy making them with your letter/number combo but they are called "wall hangings". I will have to try and find his info again, I think his name was like Larry's plate?

I just sent in money for the DMV legacy plates. I saw a modern car recently with a black plate and it looked pretty good (I assume it was a legacy plate).

:innocent: I'm just playing. While a black plate probably does look cool on a new car, it would seem out of place to me. |

I think I word I was looking for was..... tacky. Just my opinion. |

Since you have a 68 also you should just need a 68 year sticker. But other years are able to use a non-exact year sticker. I did this research over a year ago so I am not 100% on it now. Do your your research to make sure. Here's what I got. I am into it total for about $350 I think. Some guys at Goodguys swap meet area try to sell junkier looking plates for hundreds more I've found. http://i236.photobucket.com/albums/f...psfcfqtdkw.jpg |
Looks good Dave.
John, another thing to consider is the first 3 letters on the plate if you want them to match the year of your car. Each year has different series of letters. A quick google search will give you that. I got lucky as my car came with black plates that are year correct for a 69 car and as an added bonus even includes 69 in it. We sort of restored mine. I didn't want them perfect so it would maintaine the age appropriate character. Here is the front which is way more wavy than the back. We got pretty close on the color. I got my red & white month tag on eBay also. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...psyfyujl4f.jpg I even have my old high school plate with my last name on it hanging in the garage. http://i855.photobucket.com/albums/a...psqnuqc6q8.jpg |
Jeff, that blue plate is awesome!

I hope they never get enough orders for the legacy plates. A orig black plate car means something.it means it has been in ca for most of its life. If this passes I can go buy a rusted our bondo mobile out of Florida and stick black plates on it.

The black legacy plates already passed so those will happen. The old yellow w/black plates and the blue w/yellow plates didn't get enough votes (voting ended).
For a website dedicated to the modification of cars I'm a little surprised by the negative reactions. This is going to be one of the few purely aesthetic modifications I do to my cars... can't please everyone. ;) |
the black legacy plates are already shipping. If you search on google images you can see some cars with them already.
Is there a shop that repaints these things? I kinda want mine black with red wording. Its mostly a show car so not worried about a ticket. |
Maybe I'm seeing things but I swear I saw a new black plate on a newer CTSV a few weeks ago.

so I cannot put a black and red vanity plate on at a car show? As long as I use the normal plate when its driving I don't see the big deal.

John, a bunch of guys at GG use "vanity" plats at the show, some people just do not want other people taking pics of their cars with their plates for whatever reason.
There is a guy at GG that is in Oakland and does a superb job on making custom plates, and pretty sure you can pay him to do whatever color on yours (he made some all brushed aluminum ones and all black ones in the past). The guy has a work truck full of plates and normally parks by the swap area, I may have a card. He also restores plates. Note that the plates he sells can not be used for registration since they are aluminum. You can get year plats black and red already done online, i.e. year plates here for your 68 in red, about $60: http://www.licenseplates.tv/images/usatrb1.gif http://www.licenseplates.tv/year-built-261.html Like the other guys mentioned, the DMV will require the year of manufacture sticker, and plates (they "may" require a month tag separately). The YOM sticker in good shape is about $30 and up, and they are unique numbers. At the DMV they will use a magnet to test your plate, check if it is available, and pretty much that is about it. Good luck! Gui |
We made this one ourselves. It's mostly aluminum.

If your trying to get black plates made from someone other then ca, there is a guy named ray ray's frames. Do a quick search online and you will find him, his plates are worth there price and look the part.
