Craigslist Special
1 Attachment(s)
While cruising Craigslist one day I came across this lil sweetheart. The seller had picked it up from a tow yard auction and needed to get $600 for it, sold! Not wanting to loose out on the deal I called my dad, he's retired and always looking for an adventure. I told him to not ask any questions and to not judge me and asked if he could go get the deal done. My pops called a few hours later and said that the guy had delivered it and it's kinda neat...the best part is it has a SBC and a 700r4 stuffed under the dog house, bonus!

We got it down to my house and I, accidentally, tried to get the graffiti off of the side. I used a stripper that ate right through the graffiti and the blue paint, all of the sudden it's shiny and I see my eyeball staring back at me! Turns out the entire rig is aluminum other than the foot wells, you know what that means!
Lots and lots of time stripping, what am I doing? This thing is stupid, why did I even start doing this, FML! In between scraping and applying stripper I'd play with the drivetrain. I notice a bunch of new gaskets, oil pan, water pump, TC cover and even head gaskets, hmmm. My dad would come down and we'd spend time together monkeying with and getting things sorted out. We wired it enough to try and start it, hooked up a temporary fuel can and turned the key.....braaappa brappa, wumpty wumpty wumpty, it's alive! |

So fast forward to today. After being back up at my dad's house for a few months he delivered it back to me. Driveline is in, exhaust installed yesterday, lights are working, she's ready to roll! I got home from work today to find it sitting in the driveway, key in the ignition....
Feels good to drive it down the road, it still has some issues to work out but nothing that'll stop me from cruising the neighborhood. Sitting up so high with the doors open, no seatbelt and old, not really round tires is a bit odd! |
Killer!! How does it drive? Are you gonna leave the shell unpainted?
IS IT FOR SALE? |
That is awesome!

Awesome...

The brakes feel good and the steering is tight. The front springs are soft and pretty close to the bump stops so I'll need to figure out something for that.
My brother just put new wheels on his mega cab so he ran these by last night....not really the look I'm going for but I'll try them out and see what happens. I've got some wheels (Craigslist) that once cleaned up will fit the style I'm after, I'll get a picture of those tonight. As much as I'd love to keep it, I need to put a roof on the house this year. I really want to road trip it to Bonneville for Speedweek.....we'll see. |

I picked these up, 16" instead of 17.5". I like them better then what my brother gave me. I'll spray them black and leave the center cap chrome, done and done.

Like this.

It was either last year or year before at SEMA there was a polished one of those. Cool project.

Back in the day 1976 my neighbor bought an old Devco (I think thats right)
and painted it blue with an eagle down the side. He and his mom drove it from Seattle Wa to Washington DC for the Bicennetinial. They had a blast. |

This is one of my favorites. Completely modern underneath, the roof rack hides a satellite and a RV style AC. The back is able to be closed off and has a flat screen, comfy chairs, coffee maker, it's a rolling living room!

To cool!

Killer project DB!!
But I have to ask --- "what's the plan"? It's not a tow rig.... or is it? Is it a flip? Cruiser? Camper? WTF you going to do with it? Or is it like DG's (Flashythingy) tow rig... it's just an item to keep a spot on the driveway oily. |
It's a huge distraction is what it is!
I bought it before I bought the mustang thinking it would be cool to just have, the price was right and I'm a sucker for odd ball vintage. The plan today...get it sorted and enjoy bombing it around until someone has to have it. The Seattle area has a huge vintage truck/trailer following, small businesses selling goods at open air markets and street fairs, not sure any of those hippies have money though. The plan yesterday...Send it down to J-Rod&Custom and have him put it on the ground, load some crap in the back and take off for the summer! The reality is I have two weeks before key components for the mustang show up, headers, rear axle and more Mike Maier Inc. goodies. So a bit of thrashing and than back on the mustang, later it'll be sold and I'll throw the money at the house. Of course I may talk to the bank and see about a loan for the remodel.....:underchair: |
That is really cool. I may be interested in it for the right price.

So this happened....and I don't have the shoulders for it. This was about 10 minutes with Never Dull. I'm going to need to find someone who enjoys polishing or figure out how to do it with a machine.
About the sanding scratches, do I just sand it with real fine grit and thn try and polish it out? Stupid distractions! |
What happened to the one with you flipping me the bird in the reflection?? LOL
That's going to take a machine...... |
If you really want to get serious about polishing it - this would be my method.
I would get a DA (they make with smaller orbital paths for color sanding application - we have a Dynabrade, but I can't remember the specs). You can get discs for it all the way down to 3000 and 4000 grit. Start with whatever is required to work out the scratches/grinder marks (some of them may be starting with 220 from what I see). Work your way up to 2000 or 3000 and then I would buff it either with a normal buffer or I may even try an orbital buffer and some normal compounds. Any way you look at it - -this will be a massive amount of work. It would look awesome though. The part that would stink is that you would have to constantly be polishing on it. I may just DA the whole thing with 220 and be done with it! |
Thanks Brandon, I'm going to borrow some equipment from a buddy and see what happens. The back up plan is GTWayne knows a guy that has experience polishing....something about airplanes.
Something else I've learned, this thing attracts a lot of attention! I need to put up some "No Trespassing" signs at the end of the driveway! For every decent person I've got 3-4 weirdos that want to know about it. I don't like people on my property. :bigun2: |

CURE..... http://i919.photobucket.com/albums/a...s/IMG_5491.jpg |
There are probably some chemicals that will really brighten up the aluminum, but they wouldn't do anything for the scratches/grinding marks. They might be a good way to remove the oxidation though.

My truck in front of the house, probably 35'-40' away.

This reminds me of the project I did when I polished and put sharkhide on the toons on my pontoon boat. Lotta work but it looked great when done.
Then later on my friend that worked at the American Airlines overhaul base brought me a case of stuff they used to polish the planes. I haven't tried it yet but I bet it's the same stuff your friend gave you. Looks great! |
looks nice had a lot of cash till I jumped out of a jet

Still polishing and cleaning up a few things, lots of work and my shoulders are feeling it! I put it for sale at 9k on a local forum, we'll see what happens.
|
That would be a sweet flip if you got 9k for it. haha
