It only cost me about 30 grand to have Alex attempt to learn to drive there.... in the Lotus... and that was 2 weeks after sending him to open wheel school at Bondurant in preparation. Some folks don't quite understand the concept of "working up to it". :EmoteClueless: :buttkick: |
You better get good video and audio.......Maybe Ron can partner with an A/V guy to make it happen.
:popcorn2: |
Laguna
New Hoosiers showed up for the
Pantera today.. time to go Viper hunting:) Bob |
Hmmm. May have to see if I can make this, assuming it isn't already old out by the time I figure out logistics.
|
105 D.B.s in one place = lots of E. Hardy gear, and perhaps an overdose of chrome. Bring repellant.
On that note, visiting in-laws for some reason in November means a trip to Laguna (in the gutless, soulless Honda), regardless of the reason . . . |

It only spun because the suspension was such a flaming disaster.... and the tires were worn out... and hard... |
Or maybe you didn't know how to drive....

I'll vouch for the suspension being garbage, it's hanging on the wall of shame in my shed. Like I told Greg when he gave it to me was he'd have been better off using tennis balls and rebar for springs and shocks. :knokwood:
Charlie have you driven the new and improved yet? |
Your both idiots...

That's never going to happen.... If he drove it now - he'd think that's the way it always was. LOL Funny thing happened along the way. Prior to the Ron Sutton suspension redeux.... My goal was to try to get thru a track weekend without spinning. It never happened. I'd spin before the two days were up. Since then ZERO spins... and lap times are down considerably! Do I have more time in the car... yes... Did I have lots of driving school time before I bought the car?? Yes... including 3 trips to Bondurant and 1 to Ron Fellows. Did I spin at any of those driving schools? ZERO. NADA. Have I looped the much faster Lotus... yep. Once when I tried to go too deep into turn 11 at Sonoma... and lifted (a big mistake in a car that has 63% rear weight bias). Is it a sin to spin? Not in my book.... we're amateurs that try to drive like we're some kind of pro racer boys. We're in the car, on track, 3 or 4 times a year.... and I know for me - I'm still trying different lines and trying to learn and do what Sutton is asking of me. It's a steep learning curve that you just hope isn't too costly. LOL Even spinning in the Yellow Group (beginners) is a learning curve... small things like cold track and cold tires... incorrect tire pressures... forgetting where you are on track... letting your street driving carry over to track driving (completely different)... |

REALLY?? Your ?? Try -- YOU'RE |

I have to TRY to be nice to him - he has the '33.... Too bad it doesn't leak. LOL |
I spun it once in the years I owned it. For years it was one of the faster cars at the Shelby club events. Very easy to go fast in it. I sell it to :G-Dub: and suddenly it is a POS with all junk parts and unsafe to drive with built in spin cycle. I think the roadster has 4 flat tires.:poke:

My guess is - having owned more than a few cars over the years.... that these things don't happen "suddenly".... They do, however, need regular maintenance... and inspection... The car was at LEAST 10 years old by the time I bought it... things do wear and fail. I could have just replaced the shocks (a couple of which were beyond simple failure) and all the bushings (the rears were completely frozen)... and the cracked ball joint... and called it good. That's not my MO. Let's just let it go, and say the car is improved, and I love it, and I'm glad I bought it. And I stole it, and you can't have it back. |
So back to the db deal....:grouphug: I know the lotus has tripped the level before and Bob with his straight piped Pantera is loud. Is this a big deal that brings out cars that don't normally run or are usually restricted? Any idea what your buddies NASCAR or Chet's mustang db is?
I wonder if your mustang is any quieter with the reworked suspension....:peepwall:  |

The Lotus has a very high pitched exhaust -- and will trip the 103 db limit at Thunderhill.... I had to modify the exhaust to point UP and AWAY from the sound meter which is placed low in turn 15 there... 105 db at Laguna Seca IS a big deal - because they have very few "higher" sound limit days. OUSCI day was like a 93db limit -- that is STOCK CORVETTE sound. The big deal is that this is a track people love to run -- and NOT having to worry about sound is "nice". I'm always blown away that the Cup cars that run with us can make sound -- when they fire up - it scares you! LOL... somehow that deep throaty sound gets away with the 103 limit at Thill. I remember Charlie having to mod the exhaust on his '66 Mustang to pass sound... The whole suspension discussion on the Mustang has been hashed to death... it was time for an upgrade and it got it. End of story. I loved the car before and love it more now. Done. |
Nobody should read anything into our "banter".... I ran the Mustang for a couple of seasons before deciding to change the suspension! I had a blast driving it... it wasn't until I bought the Lotus that I even "thought" about doing anything to the Mustang.... once in there - we found lots of old worn out stuff... well DUH! The car was built in '99 or '98... WTF would anyone expect to find! 10 years of running the crap out of it... yeah... shocks and things get old and tired.
The other thing I sometimes feel like I fail to point out --- is that Sutton made the car EASIER to drive... he didn't make it (or set it up) to be the FASTEST... it's set up to be easy to drive and to be able to make mistakes and be able to recover from them. |
Stielow liked how it drove.....I rest my case.....................So did Jody....I rest my case again......
Stay tuned for pics of Welds parted out roadster.......when it arrives..... |

Wait..... HOW many years ago was that?? Oh yeah -- I bought the car FOUR years ago... |
I remember the creativity being done at Laguna for the Optima deal, just wasn't sure what the number was.
As far as the banter, I get it and understand the bromance around here....I'd like to think I wouldn't jump on any real drama....well, maybe talk about the Miata. Sounds like a great event and a good time with friends for the holiday, enjoy! |

HA!! The lonely Miata --- I haven't even retitled it yet!! It just sits in the corner of the shop like a little model car. 93db is tough to make... so restrictive!! 105db is pretty loud in comparison. This will only be the second time I've run Laguna Seca... it's our 36th Anniversary - and Thanksgiving... it will be a great week. The area is special - not like Charlie, who is Special ED... it's hard not to want to run there and visit the area. After beating the crap out of the '33 -- Charlie might be able to get more from the parts than the car is worth complete... I think it might need a complete repaint after this last trip. |

Oh.... what you wouldn't pay to own one of my poorly maintained cars.... :G-Dub: :smiley_smack: |

- The exhaust exited low right - The sound check station is on the right at the start of the front straight - Due to the nature of the corner it's very easy to hit the rev limiter in 3rd and that causes a pop right next to the sound check. It's one of the quietest cars at any event I've been to........except for that pop and the resulting 3 meatball flags which had me tip-toeing all day Sunday. |

Laguna 105
I have run Laguna several times with my street exhaust
and it makes the 105 db... this event will bring out a lot of cars that you will not see there any other time other than an Open exhaust day which is sometimes once a year 105 is still tough for the Cup cars Funny how this sound thing came up... I was taking the quiet car.. my Firebird... down to the gas station to fill it up for the Marina event this weekend and barely got down the street and the red lights lit up behind.... pulled over and the Lady Cop said I was pulled over for a loud exhaust and Bald tires... I did not want to let her know that the Hoosiers were brand new with less than 20 miles on them.. fix it ticket I was thinking the Pantera is a lot Louder.. may have to put my quiet exhaust for running around and also some tires with tread on them.. |
The other HUGE difference at Laguna Seca is that the sound is portable and moves around - and is manned by the County not the track.
