Hood insulation question
 

My hood is painted the same as my car...yellow...underneath. I thought that I might like to use some black block offs (for lack of a better term)

I don't want to use the factory insulation as it covers the entire hood. I am looking for some thing I can put in between the braces where you can see the hood skin.

So my question is do any of you have any recs on what material to use.? I know they make underhood insulation that has a sticky backing which would be perfect, but it is a silver foil. I need something black.

Any suggestions would be appreciated

my friend used speaker box carpet glued to hood, It looked pretty good

I had not thought of that.

Purchase plain old foam in a thickness slightly larger than the depth between the skin and the support. Cut to the appropriate shape, spray bomb it a semi-gloss black.

It sounds cheesy, but it looks awesome when done. Trust me pn this one, my friend did this on his car and people were always asking where he bought the custom inserts.

I will let you know how it turns out. I guess I could alway use high heat black. LOL

High heat black is a perfect.... the semi gloss that my friend used was in fact BBQ paint.

what kinda foam are you talkin about I need to do the same thing payton is lookin for, Ive been considerin dynomat insolation but not liken that to much right now.

You might think about Extreme liner over the silver material or dynamat extreme. Extreme liner is black but I do not know what kind of temps it can handle.

I just checked it out on Dynamats site. here is what they had on Extreme liner

So I guess it is good for high heat areas. Also good that it blocks low freq noises.

is for the interior of the car. I do not believe it would hold up under the hood. Most of the sound and heat barrier stuff for the engine compartment has a foil outer barrier. I found some from second skin, but like I stated, it has a foil outer barrier and I don;t want under the hood to look like the space shuttle.

payton have you mad any decisions yet I am with you. I am not wanting silver but not sure what I do want, I have considered the molded insulation from classic but I am affraid that aint gonna be pimpen eather. and my paint gun decided to start spitten when i painted my hood and I really dont want to paint it again...

I thought about getting stock hood liner, maybe 2, and cutting the pieces out of that material to fill in between the braces. I am a not sure regular foam would hold up to the underhood heat and I sure don't want a piece dropping on top of my motor or header.

If you check out Hushmat, they have a closed closed cell foam in 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2. It's black and has a high temp adhesive, it is the same looking stuff Rad Rides used on their hood and trunk lids.

Yes, we keep most of the options instock

What ever you choose to do make sure it sticks forever. Its going to be nightmare if it falls on header / exhaust pipe.

Have you seen the mirror kits pre kut to fit between the braces, as clean as your engine compartment is this may look good but might be a pain to keep clean.. they are in classic ind. cat. page 481.. i think they are acylic like plexi-glass. I may go that route myself.

I have decided to have the hood sprayed with Line-X in between the braces. I wanted something that I could just stick in the holes, but as some of you have mentioned and I feared, it may fall on the motor.

Back to the original problem. the dude that spayed my hood did not get paint in between the braces very well so with the hood up you can see, overspray, thin paint and in some spots primer. I will post pics when completed, but it is going to take a month or so as it is not a pressing problem.

and the bed liner material will withstand heat to 280 degrees...looks like it is a go.

I bought mine for my 70 Chevelle from OPGI. They have it cut to fit within the openings in the hood skin and it is a black mat material.
