Restarting my thread in the Project Update Forum. I started in early 2014 with a complete tear down, blast an epoxy. Tubs, 4 link, some rust repair, cage, sub-frame and some interior work including new trans and trans tunnel is all complete. A ton of pictures following. Thanks again to everyone for your inspiring builds.

Installed sort of a reverse mold for the custom fiberglass interior panels, probably seems a little strange to use wood, expanding foam insulation and drywall putty....but this was a quick way to shaping this mold. Then I laminated glass over the top. Of course this will all get removed later in the build and the glass will be covered with leather and alcantera. The wood mold will get removed and tossed, of course then I will need to mount the interior panels, truth be told, I haven't figured that out yet but I wanted to get this done prior to installing the roll cage so I could put the cage bars tucked up as tight as possible. It looks rough now...but it's a good base with a cool shape.

Roll Cage was next. I left the door bars off for now, just to make access easier.

Had to modify the bottom of the doors to fit around the cage and also installed Ring Bros hinges. Pretty Sweet pieces.

Seat mounting brackets. Went through a couple redesigns but for certain have DSE to thank for the concept from one of their first gens. I spent a fair amount of time notching the sub frame connectors and lowering the seat mounts in order to get my head as far away from the rollbar as possible. There is another 1/2" to be had by modifying the seat brackets...for another day.

Mounted the seats and did some test fitting of the door bars.

Trans cross member. That was a fair bit of work!!! Tons of fun though.

Went for the bolted sub frame connectors. Sleeved them of course. Had to apologize to myself for being so stupid and not doing this before I installed them. Actually remember saying to myself...ah no big deal, you can put the sleeves in later. Had to buy myself a beer.:bang:

Trans tunnel fab was next. Tried to keep it tight. Tried to increase both foot wells.

Installed the DSE master cylinder bracket. A few slight mods to clean up the firewall here. Also made some changes to the way the wiper motor mounts so that it ends up level, no clue why factory and aftermarket motors are mounted at some weird angle.

During one of my "hey sweetheart, can you come out and give me a hand in the shop for a few minutes" episodes...my lovely wife actually said...."how come you make so many small cuts of metal instead of just cutting it once?" Because she is beyond gorgeous and I really enjoy her company....I just simply responded ..."cause I'm lame". A proper explanation or smart@ss remark wouldn't have served me well.

All caught up now with the build thread, present day work on the cowl starts now. Wheels and tires should be here in a couple of days. Brakes and rear are on order.

Wheels arrived this week, going through mock up now. With the 315's in the front, I knew I was headed towards flaring the front fenders a bit. Looks like the front track width is going to be a little over 2" wider than the rear so I am likely headed towards flaring the rears as well so I can push the rears out to be equal with the front???. Haven't ordered the rear-end yet so at least if I decide to flare the rear, that won't be an issue. Appreciate any advice on the track width issue.

Don't know how I missed this before. Nice job, love the little "unseen" details in the tranny tunnel. Plus, I'm a little partial to 2nd gens....

grendel 07-24-2016 05:08 PM

Having flared the tail end out with some metal work...

GO AS WIDE AS YOU CAN

Loving the work.

Thanks. You and Steve both convinced me to flare the rear. Both of your cars look great. Looks like I will need to push the rear fenders out 1 5/8" each.

Worked on the cowl this weekend, the plan is to seal it off 100%. Though I did prep the underside so it is sealed and could get wet if the access panel leaks. I will also drain the pockets below the wipers that I have created. Pics on that later. For sure I have a few hours with the grinder on my plate tomorrow!!

Brakes arrived. A little shipping snafu with the rotors....but Bear and Matt's Classic Bowties are both top shelf. Slotted only rotors on their way.

Welds cleaned up on the cowl. I will put a gasket under the access panel with the goal of completely eliminating the chance for any water or debris to get into the area below the cowl and down into the door sills. I sealed the metal with rust restore and then painted it....just in case water ever gets past the access panel or the wipers. I realize I've created a pool for water where the wipers bolt to the cowl, I might create drains here with some metal and rubber tubes to direct the water out. A decision for later.

I think you are, too.

Just curious have you kept track of the hours you have in this project ?

I saw the car in person yesterday and the workmanship is better than John's pictures. The front flares will look great when he gets it completed. I can't wait to see the car as it progresses. Definitely the most radical Pro-touring car in the Boise area.

64mali 08-21-2016 08:06 PM

very clean work! I can't wait to see the progress continue

Front fender flares are mostly tacked up, will stop here until the rear end is in so I can have a better feel of how the back flares are going to come together...need to insure they play nice with each other. Huge thanks to Steve Lenning and Grendel for paving the way on flaring the rears!! I owe beers!!! And for sure, appreciate the help and encouragement from Kyle at DSE and Tim McGilton. Front width ended up at 74 5/8" with 18x11's and 5"backspace. Plenty of clearance everywhere ....except the fender of course. Will fab my own fiberglass inner fenders later.

If you can see the black sharpie line on the flare (it was originally in line with the body line), you can see how much I had to raise the flare up, along with bringing it out almost 1 5/8". Truth be told, I'm way over my head when it comes to hammer and dolly'n this back in shape but I'm going to make it happen!! I will end up with about 3/8" of clearance while compressed to the bump stops and at full lock on the steering and about 1 degree of camber. I'm assuming that is about what camber will be run on the street? Hope is my strategy on this 3/8" being enough!
