Another second gen Camaro, from Aus.
Hey everyone, my names Jake and I'm from Perth, Australia. Been lurking on Lateral G for about a year now which has ultimately inspired me to turn my tough street car into a proper pro tourer.
I purchased the car with a 502 BBC, T400, moser 9" and a few other bits and pieces, it's an honest car but not really what i thought it would be so I've bit the bullet, taken a deposit for the motor and box and started tearing it down. The new setup will be an LS3 / TR6060, Brand new subframe with all the fruit, torque arm rear suspension, wilwood 6 / 4pot brakes and a 285 / 335 wheel and tyre combo along with a bunch of other little things to suit ( mini tubs, flat firewall, wilwood pedal box, VDO gauges, AAW wiring loom etc ) The exterior will stay is for now, i plan to track this car at so i wont go dumping thousands into body work only to end up in a sandtrap / wall testing the limits of the car. Motor and box have been sold and are due to be picked up this weekend, so the car currently looks like this... http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psg4exlfxv.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psxpre7fnk.png I've also stripped the interior out, started removing all the sound deadner and seam sealer from the floor to check for any rust. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pslsa7asjx.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6bilzp1d.png Found one little patch so far in the rear D/S foot well which hopefully isnt too much worse than whats pictured. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps726ukagr.png The only other area that needs some attention is the very top corner on the P/S, the floor is attached to the sill panels which have been abused on this car, causing the floor to come away from the sill seam when it was bent by a jack, stand etc. So that will need a bit of massaging and welding. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pshcanwqdo.png Other than that the floors seem super solid and it has had a new boot floor put in at some stage so its all good. Will attack it with a wire wheel to bring it all back to bare metal, undercoat, dynamat, underlay and then finally new carpet will go in. My big shipment of parts will be ordered beginning of next week and surprisingly it was only an extra $200 to ship the whole crate by air compared to sea, so it will be here in December rather than March, hopefully Christmas comes early :D Pretty excited to actually build a car, the way I want it with hopefully little paid work. My time frame is around 4 months as there is an event as the beginning of March i'd love to get too. |
You've got a great car to start out with, it's gonna be fantastic when you complete your plans for it.
|
Welcome! You have a great plan for your project. It will be fun to watch it come together.

Looking forward to watching this build! Looks like a real nice car to start with....

Cheers guys!
Motor is finally out and gone! http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3tw6zikr.jpg Also received my fuel system parts from Summit today. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psr1muki5y.jpg Aeromotive phantom 340 in tank fuel system to suit the carby style ricks tank. And a corvette regulator / fuel filter combo with - 6 fittings on each end. Super impressed with the quality and finish of the pump system and it is quite a nice unit. The kit includes pre filters, foam baffling to avoid fuel surge and is completely universal as long as your fuel tank is between 5.5" - 11" deep. This particular single pump model is good for up to 850HP N/A or 700HP FI, which should be plenty for now, if not its quite simple to swap to the dual pump 1200HP units. http://www.verociousmotorsports.com/am_18688_v1.jpg Plan is to run braided line from the pump to the regulator, and hardline the rest of the way to the fuel rail. My rear floor pan is also on the way so the metalwork will begin shortly. Not sure what to do for the firewall at the moment, would like some kind of beadrolled shape but unsure of what will look tidy without being to complicated or over the top. |
Car looks solid and should be a fun car.

Unfortunately ran into more rust with this thing after deciding to investigate what was hiding underneath these horrible patch panels.
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pswoqnvdog.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pse98ou8gq.jpg I was hoping it was just rusted out where they had covered up, but unfortunately it goes a little deeper into the sill than that. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psbacggsx1.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psyzy5fedw.png Yet to find out what behind this patch below the door hinge mounts but from feeling behind its the same story as the left hand side. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psdhqz2uhi.png Fortunately you can get replacement panels for the outer skin, however I have not been able to find any replacements for the rest of the areas not covered by the panel below, all in all not too bad and will give me a chance to fabricate a few simple pieces to repair the rotted out areas without having to worry too much about it looking good as it will mostly never see daylight again. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pslb9wicwd.png In more exciting news I've purchased a motor and box. LS3 / TR6060 out of a VF2 SSV (commodore) with 14,000k's (8,700 miles ), close enough to new for me and at a very reasonable price. :) |
That should be a nice drivetrain. Better to find it now then after it's painted.

Little bit of progress, started the repairs on the cowl area, and coated it in a product called KBS rust seal. Very similar to POR15 and it has worked great so far for me.
It's a 3 part system, 1. Aqua Kleen ( Degreaser ) 2. Rust Blast ( Converter ) 3. Rust seal (sealer / top coat ) The Rust blast worked very well on what I would consider heavy rust, however it took a couple of hours of constant spraying and wire brushing and I used almost an entire bottle on just the side inner cowl area that is in the pictures above. Regardless it worked great and the Sealer looks really nice and levels out nicely. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pss9ntzoeo.png Also started striping the floor back to bare metal and coating with the KBS system. Didn't bother with the rust blast as it was completely bare metal, just the cleaner and sealer. Came out great and hopefully wont have to touch it ever again. Have left some areas un touched as they will be cut out when the floor pan tubs and firewall are replaced. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5redva0x.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psejilss5v.png Little comparison, before during and after. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psopbhw4rd.png Bit more progress, done as much of the floor as i can, also painted the underside of the dash, parcel shelf and rear firewall in a semi gloss black. Will all be covered in dynamat anyway but a layer of nice clean smooth paint doesn't go astray. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pskhvoud2x.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psyzeo6qxe.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psjroay5ro.png Also used sikaflex 227 to seal up all of the panel seams, messy stuff! Didn't turn out too bad, i just need to go around with a razor blade and cut off any stringy bits. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4tf4zixb.png Rust repairs will be finished this weekend hopefully, and i might take a saw tot he firewall as well if i have time, that will be a nerve racking experience haha! |
Bit of progress, lower cowl area has been patched, sealed and the replacement panel welded in. Also quite proud of my seam sealing job, came out super neat. Ill be doing the same to the opposite side.
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psr9o7jbg9.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psqt4vwpvy.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9y94x4i4.jpg Also removed the firewall ready for a nice flat piece to replace it with a bead rolled pattern, the wiper motor hole will be filled in and the motor will be relocated behind the guard on the firewall where the 'X' is. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psoriw5wzk.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8meforox.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psmupt6dfh.jpg Parts shipment due this coming week, hopefully won't take too long to clear customs. |
Good work on the seam sealer. Car is coming along nicely. Keep up the good work!
|
Big score! Picked up a set of forgeline GA3Rs second hand for a great price. The offsets are to suit VE commodores / pontiac G8 so all i have to do is order a set of outer barrels to suit 315/335 tyre combo on the Camaro. Stoked!

So about 2 weeks ago the post man came.
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psli7hfmji.jpg Which contained some great bits of gear. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psq7q2f7z5.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pseqjp9lec.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psjiowjswa.jpg and finally a beautiful piece from Speedtech, it will be a shame to paint it but it just wont match the theme of the car. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3usdtozg.jpg My large order of parts including the subframe and torque arm also arrived which i'm yet to be able to un pack. However I did get sent this pic of the subframe. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psbdu4macr.jpg Car is now at a workshop having the mini tubs installed, flat firewall made and a few other little bits and pieces. After reading the G5R build thread on here about 100 times I decided to clean up the ATS aluminum spindles by removing the casting marks and having them bead blasted and clear coated by Greg Hogan aka CRISIS http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1anauc0t.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psutyvkzat.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps0chapkcg.jpg Quickly hit them with some primer to make sure there weren't any deep marks left from the Dremel. First time 'detailing' parts like these, hoping to do a lot of the engine bay parts to go that little extra mile. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pskp03gn8u.jpg Keen to see how they turn out once I get them back from Greg, will be getting all my suspension parts and driveline painted in the coming weeks ready for mock up. |
Nice update. Doing all those little extras make a noticeable difference in the finish product.
|
Very cool, and coming together pretty quick. That thing is gonna be nasty. I did some of the same mods to my second gen. Mine is still a long way from done though, you're smart not to paint it!
BTW, my wife and I visited Australia in December and loved it! I want to build a RHD Ute now. Although I will say it was awesome banging gears left handed in the rental. She couldn't do it though, too weird for her. |

Bit of an update, got the spindles back from Greg which turned out perfect.
http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3tygli22.jpg And I've spent the past few weekends painting all my suspension components and motor / box. It all came out absolutely perfect with a finish as nice as a lot of exterior paint on new cars. Both colours are from a Maserati, Grigio Alfieri is the lighter colour and Grigio Granito is the darker colour. All components are finished in high gloss with the exception of the motor and box. First up we prepped and painted all of the smaller parts that i could fit in the car. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psjaumqwz0.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pswatuxms0.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pszyyu6dsq.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps51xvh7uf.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psfyzr6ajx.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psjtk7hty6.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psgwskvkn9.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psalonyt2z.png http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pssg4tzfsj.png Then came the motor box and frame, unfortunately being in a rush to get this stuff out of the panel shop I didn't have a chance to get any decent photos. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psekcyjcb0.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psfec1gbh7.jpg Then we mounted the driveline to the frame to storage and transport. And fitted a few bits to see how it all works together! http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...pscvripbva.jpg http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1zs8mmxw.jpg Plan is to add a Drive Junky front accessory drive in brushed with Black anodized pulleys, and carbon fiber rocker covers. Should all tie in nicely. http://i1228.photobucket.com/albums/...psklh5zvcy.jpg Hoping to get the car back from having the tubs and firewall done soon, then ill work on prepping the underside for raptor liner and getting the diff chopped up to suit the 335 rear tyres which are waiting in the US for my new wheel pieces, headers, trans tunnel cover and drive junky setup. |
Welcome aboard !.Looks like you are going to have an "interesting car when you are finish .especially a foreign car.Must best "fun" getting parts for your car.Good lick on your build,
|
Well, this has escalated quite quickly. Long story short I went to remove a piece of the wrap and it just pulled the clear coat right off with it. This happened even with the aid of a heat gun right from the get go. I knew one of the 1/4s was butchered and needing replacement and that i wanted to undercoat the floor. So i decided to get the entire shell blasted, with the remainder of the sheet metal at a later date.
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4485/...1a5c9265_b.jpgShell after media blast and epoxy primer by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4507/...c5e125a1_b.jpgDodgy 1/4 panel repair attempt 1 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4479/...0b2dd8da_b.jpg1/4 panel drop offs rusted right through by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4460/...28008272_b.jpgDodgy repair attempt 2 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4473/...db9455a7_b.jpgDodgy repair attempt by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr As it turns out, both 1/4s require replacing as well as the boot floor / tail light panel. So I've ordered basically the entire back half of the car, door skins, twin headlight / RS nose cone and cowl panel. It's a shame so much needs replacement but it leaves me open to do some custom touches to the 1/4s and rockers, as id like to have a bit of functional aero on this car including a large splitter, flat floor panels, diffuser and spoiler. Going to try and attempt as much of the repair work myself as possible, other than the 1/4s as I'm aiming for quite a high standard with the fit/finish/quality now to match the stout suspension / driveline. Have begun by removing the cowl panel to repair the inner structure rust on both corners. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4493/...99c0f98b_b.jpgOld cowl removed, inner structure repairs required by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr I also received my new outer wheel halves from the states to make the overall size an 18x12, fits with a surprising amount of room to spare with the minitubs. https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4514/...2c3d0793_b.jpgForgeline test fit 2 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4472/...85ef171c_b.jpgForgeline wheel test fit by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr Now away again for work until late November, then hoping to really get stuck into it during Decemeber when I have some time off. The remaining replacement sheet metal is about to leave the states but I can tidy up the rest of the small areas that need attending too, along with the cowl without having to rush. |
That did escalate! Good luck sticking with it and moving forward.
|
There's always more! But...you're doing it right and in the long run it will be worth it. Looking forward to seeing more pictures and soon!!
 |
Finally had time to start repairing the rusted sections of the Camaro. Was my first ever attempt at sheet metal fabrication and welding. So the welds arent fantastic and the piece isnt perfect. But the cowl panel still fits nicely and the welds had decent penetration. All in all i'd call it a success.

After that it will be time to mock up the suspension and drive train whilst I await my sheetmetal to arrive. I'd like to set the motor as far back as possible for some custom radiator ducting, without taking up too much legroom. |
Had some spare time on the weekend to assemble my Speedtech Extreme subframe, brakes etc, some awesome engineering behind the frame, once i have my Forgelines sorted out ill look at getting the whole lot test fit under the car.

That's pretty. I like the engine color choice. Good work!

Long time no update!
Where to start. Apologies for the poor quality / portrait photos, i really should have kept on top of documenting the build a little more thoroughly. Fitted the Speedtech torque arm rear suspension. A benefit of removing the trunk floor was that i could fully weld the cross brace that the coilovers and panhard bar bolt too, with a floor already in place you can't get a mig / tig in to fully weld the brace along the top edge. https://live.staticflickr.com/964/40...97675cdc_b.jpgIMG_3764[1] by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...af736eeb_b.jpg20180625_144348 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr I also had the Forgeline GA3R's refinished. The centre's were done in the same colour as the motor / transmission, with the inner barrels being done in gloss black to hopefully hide brake dust in the future. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...82ca6f45_b.jpg20180422_150226 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a94a92bc_b.jpg20180422_150311 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a3b2495a_b.jpg20180422_152427 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5849fdf4_b.jpg20180622_170654 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr I then had the huge tyres fitted so that they car could be trialed on its wheels with its new rear suspension for the first time. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aa542905_b.jpg20180625_143017 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5d8c6704_b.jpg20180625_143002 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...0b942400_b.jpg20180625_144404 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr The next big task was to fit the Extreme subframe. After having the firewall made i wasn't happy with the execution, it was warped and the top edge wasn't very level which made cutting a large hole in it to fit the driveline as far back as the frame allows a little easier. Nearly the entire motor except the Drive Junky accessory drive will sit in line or behind the front axle centre line. Pretty happy with that! https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...2d3bba71_b.jpg20180728_104831 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9e1c8d91_b.jpg20180731_155015 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...12113544_b.jpg20180731_155023 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5468aac4_b.jpg20180808_130607 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c6a3b88d_b.jpg20180923_150156 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr More posts to come shortly! |
After waiting over 12 months for my AMD sheet metal to arrive from the states after a major shipping f**k up the old junk panels were finally removed and the new pieces installed. This included
- full 1/4 panels - trunk floor + drop off extensions - outer wheel houses - rear beaver panel - rear tail light panel - doors skins Basically everything rearward of the fenders was replaced, fortunately the fenders were completely rust free and undamaged save for a little warping on the passenger side. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...fc374042_b.jpgreceived_405655243515161 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c589756c_b.jpgreceived_312286949402422 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...eb7d1021_b.jpgreceived_981056035615468 AMD only supply trunk floors to suit 71-73 camaros, the 70's have a different shape floor and rear parcel shelf setup, so some modification was required to make it all match up. Can't tell it was done now that its been metal finished. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...7d1f11c0_b.jpgreceived_379640986160549 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...aa29586a_b.jpgreceived_346963389239387 Everything was epoxy'd before fitting up the outer panels for the final time. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c18706bf_b.jpg20190301_192540 I couldn't resist putting the wheels on and winding the photos done for some photos, i also trial fitted the new anvil auto tucked bumper and a low trunk spoiler. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...081f574b_b.jpg20190310_134639 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...af65c2d9_b.jpg20190310_134848 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f4840e4d_b.jpg20190310_134916 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e9f324e7_b.jpg20190310_134927 I also have Anvil inner fenders, front spoiler and radiator close out panel on the way. |
Looking real good. Keep up the good work!:thumbsup:

Wow very nice! It looks great all together.
|
Very nice! I'm glad to see you're still plugging away at it. Keep up the great work!

Thanks all!
In the future I plan on running an angled radiator and hood ducting similar to the RS Rampage Camaro. Since i need to push the radiator as far forward as possible i needed to look at changing how the hood latch system works. The factory setup is massive and bulky, so i removed the lever system and modified the bracket to accept a newer cable release GM latch ( found on a chevy ss / VF Commodore ) https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...af74cf6a_b.jpg20190803_123106 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...91eec432_b.jpg20190803_123158 I also modified the large support bracket to allow the radiator to fit further forward into the nose. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...b757dc91_b.jpg20190406_171322 All factory mount locations remain, and I've used a Lokar universal cable release system to open the hood and trunk. https://www.lokar.com/assets/images/...hood-trunk.jpg With the trunk all that was needed was a small tab for the cable to attach too, and a bracket for the cable adjuster. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...e454c8b7_b.jpg20190422_110604 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...85890fa9_b.jpg20190422_110616 Pretty happy with the results, i will trim the cable once i have decided on a mounting place for the two release handle. The only downside i have found is that the handles have to be mounted on the passenger side, so ill have to get out of the car and walk around to the passenger side to open either the hood or trunk, but it is not a deal breaker. Hopefully i wont ever have to open the hood in a hurry or whilst out driving  |
Looking good!!!

Great ideas! Looks great.

Thanks!
Final update for a little while, instead of going the common DSE subframe connectors, i wanted to maximize rear passenger legroom / comfort by offsetting the connectors close to the rockers. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...9345d21c_b.jpgPART_1563193722369 by Jake Baldwin, on Flickr I also wanted the connection points to the subframe to look almost seamless with no brackets or bracing protruding out each side. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f36c9c7d_b.jpg20190725_161409 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...5f10ee5f_b.jpg20190725_161403 They have also been notched to suit the aftermarket Planted seat rails for my Recaro CS seats i got for an absolute steal! (approx $500 USD). https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...f8e53f92_b.jpgreceived_1851106264955855 https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...a1de0b41_b.jpg20190801_170001 The rear seat area was also raised up (as you can see above) to add a tonne of room for mufflers. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ef34cbaf_b.jpg20190801_170247 Next plan is to sort the firewall, get a driveshaft made and finish the trans tunnel. A pet hate of mine with second gen camaros is the top of the cowl that uses the cheap plastic to stop leaves etc getting into the cowl. I plan on adjusting the shape of the openings and creating custom "fake vents" that wont allow any moisture or dirt etc into the cowl. More on that soon :) |
Great job!!!
