garage or lift.........
 

opinions needed. i am in a dilemma and need some advice. i am either building another garage or i must invest in a lift or 2.

option 1: i have been approved to build a garage but it has to be a single car due to our property lines and code. i can build and have been quoted on a 14x22 space for a cost of roughly $14500-$17k, this will allow for 1 car and some storage. to add a lift so i can store 2 cars the price will add about $3500 to above price listed

option 2: raise the ceiling in one of my garages to accommodate a lift at a cost of about $10-$12k, this will allow for a dual lift and raising the ceiling so i can store 2 more cars


option 1 will cost about $5-$8k more and may add value to my house if i decide to sell

option 2 will achieve the same thing but i will be about $4k-$5k to raise the ceiling that will add zero value but i can always take the dual lift with me

thoughts?

I would build the detached garage with a lift. You will get more storage than you have now & still be able to work on cars. You can always take the lift with you. Like you said it will bring the value of your house up

I'd build the garage. Extra storage and parking makes more sense. From the list of your car collection the Extra garage looks to be the better choice.

I'm not sure of your current garage layout but could your current garage have height and width added to make one big garage? I know you mentioned just the height so I'm assuming no.

Which option adds more value to your home?

Whats where you would build the garage now? Would you miss it, or would it take away from the home in anyway?

14x22 is really tight quarters. With a 4 post lift you won't have enough depth for a workbench at the end. If it's only for storage, then you're fine. I'd draw the floor plan to scale and then add the lift and any benches, shelves, tool boxes, and equipment you'd likely have in there.

$14-17K sounds awfully inexpensive. For budget protection I'd add at least 10% overage, then xxxx? for unforeseen surprises.

I'd lean toward your already established space and lifting the ceiling. Potentially less disruptive to the lot size and easier to control costs.

I would build the new garage and plan for a 4 post lift.

I would also not rule out putting a lift in your current garage when you run out of space in your new Garage.

for Now build the new Garage.

If the garage is that cheap, go for adding the garage.
Get a signed contract with specific details before embarking up that path. Seems rather inexpensive, not sure where your located. , but here in Cali.. budget would be at least 25k - 35k.

Wait --- You list half a zillion cars in your "signature" line and you are trying to figure out adding a ONE car garage -- and debating the piddly costs of adding a lift?

asking for advice/opinions, seems like you do not have one.

i chose to build the single garage and add a lift to it. shingles go on on tuesday.

Yeah --- just seemed kinda funny to me when I see all the cars you have listed and then going with a one car garage..... Or is that just a list of every car you've ever had vs have.

single car garage is all that will fit on my property without cutting trees etc and i wasn't willing to do that again. i have 2 two car garages and need space for 6, therefore a larger single car with a lift makes more sense than adding lifts in the others and being crunched for space

the signature is what i currently have, never made sense to me people listing cars they use to own but to each there own

So did you go with the high roof for the lift? What lift did you go with?

If it were me with the amount of cars you've got, I would've logged the property and built a real garage. 2 here, 2 there, 1 over here...Makes more sense to house them together if you can.

i live in a subdivision, not the country. cant just build a massive 60x60 garage. my house had a 2 car garage when i bought it, i built a 2 car on to that, now i have built a single on to that with a lift. its an L shaped garage attached to my house, i can now house 6 cars

My dad is in the market for a lift, just curious which way you went on that...I assume 4 post?
