My intro with QuadraDeuce

I have been lurking here (and the Pro-Touring forums) for many years while building out my 69 Camaro, however last year I was able to pick up an All Wheel Drive 1932 Roadster called QuadraDeuce. I'm hoping many of you have seen the car before - I remember reading about it in the magazines 20 years ago. Here is a little history:

Version 1.0
First created in 1995, the QuadraDeuce was the brainchild of Summit Racing Equipment R&D Chief, Mark Stielow, famous for his Pro Touring Camaros. It was initially painted purple and yellow, had a 6-speed transmission and made the rounds in all of the major car magazines such as Hot Rod, Car & Driver, Street Rodder and of course the Summit catalogs.

Version 2.0
Recreated in 2000 by Troy Trepanier of the famous Rad Rides by Troy. The original QuadraDeuce contributed its GMC Syclone front differential and transfer case, front suspension, Corvette ZR-1 rear differential, Harwood fiberglass/carbon fiber body and grille shell insert. The rest of the vehicle was heavily modified or built from scratch to create a whole new look.

Version 3.0
Updated in 2016 by Campbell Auto Restoration, the paint, engine and drivetrain were all retained. Everything else was updated including new interior, leather dash, gauges, soft top, brakes, wheels & tires, headlights, and many changes to the suspension geometry. She has a few nicks and chips, but that iconic paint from version 2.0 is still there.

Some updates specs below:
CHASSIS
Frame: Harwood frame rails stretched to 112" wheelbase
Front Suspension: Pushrod activated A-arm, GMC Syclone differential with custom half-shafts and limited slip
Rear Suspension: C4 Corvette suspension with coil overs, Corvette ZR-1 center section and limited slip
Brakes: Baer four-wheel disc 6 piston calipers (14.0" front and rear)
Wheels and Tires: Budnik Pivot SKO (18"x8" front, 20"x10" rear), Pirelli P Zero tires (245/45R-18 and 285/40R-20)

ENGINE AND TRANSMISSION
Type: Chevy 400 small block bored to 406 cubic inches, 594 HP, 0-60 in 3.2 seconds
Cylinder Heads: Chevy Bowtie 18° aluminum, ported, polished, cc-ed
Induction: Chevy Bowtie 18° aluminum intake modified for electronic fuel injection, 35 lb.-hr. Bosch injectors, Holley ECM
Exhaust: Custom 2" primary headers and dual exhaust with Flowmaster mufflers into single tailpipe tip
Transmission: TH-700-R4 automatic with 3,000 RPM stall converter, built by Rossler Transmission
Other Items: Custom C&R Racing radiator, custom air cleaner by Rad Rides by Troy, custom gas tank by Rick’s Tanks
Engine Built By: John Lingenfelter of Lingenfelter Performance

PAINT AND BODY
Paint: PPG Smoke Charcoal Silver and Wild Cherry
Body Modifications: Hand-built steel hood, aluminum side panels, grille shell, and taillights all by Rad Rides by Troy
Modifications 3.0: Mirrors and headlights by Campbell Auto Restoration
Bodywork By: Warren Lewis at Rad Rides by Troy
Paint By: St. Aubin Auto Body, Manteno, IL
Flames and Graphics By: Bob Thrash, Manteno, IL

INTERIOR
Upholstery: Distressed leather with perforated inserts, custom seat, door panels by Campbell Auto Restoration

And here are some recent pictures from its recent outing at the August 2016 Good-Guys in Pleasanton.

Good to meet everyone here,
Desi

Congrats to you! That was the deal of the century!! If I would have known about it being on ebay, you would have had a fight on your hands...

I consider the QD to be an iconic build (which I would probably modify as soon as I got it home...:willy: )

Love this car! Welcome!

Yeah, I know. Kinda floored me when I was able to get it.

Yep, exactly, I thought the same, so we tried to modify it to bring it up to date, but at the same time making sure it didn't look too different. I think we succeeded. We spent a long time talking about things like tire sizes - we wanted a bit more rubber on the sidewall like a Hot Rod instead of a Hot Wheels, but had to stay EXACTLY within the same percentage difference in diameter front to rear on order for the AWD gearing to work properly. We also spent a lot of time finding just the right distressed leather, then have some of it perforated to slightly update the look.

Speaking of updates, that thing is begging for an LS3/LS7. :popcorn2:

Yeah, I know, but with only a few thousand miles on the Lingenfelter engine, I didn't want to touch it yet.

Just please tell me you are driving the wheels off of it and enjoying it!!!

Loved this car when I first read about it. Glad to see it pop back up and owner on here.

Absolutely! Luckily no snow where I live, so put on a jacket, gloves, and hat, and drive around for no good reason every few days. I'm sure it would drive fine in snow with AWD, but I would not want to deal with road crap slinging up into the interior with no fenders.

Congrats on the buy! Cool car with such pedigree and history.

Kevin and the CAR crew do such nice work. Very good shop.

And leave that bad ass 18 degree motor in there -- no LS can touch the sound of that thing I bet. :bigun2:

Very cool car, I live by Summit so I've seen it several times. Are you planning on taking it to Super Summit at Norwalk this year?

Thanks! I plan to take it to events here in California, but no real plans to take it elsewhere. I'm hoping to never trailer it again, and I can't see going cross country with maybe 120 miles per tank of gas. But maybe one day it would be cool to go to some events around the country.

Congrats to you, and a job well done on the updates. I always liked this paint scheme. But the wheel/tire change as well as the new interior look GREAT!

I saw the car at the NSRA Nats when in Syracuse in 1995-6. It was purple then. Was a wild ahead of its time car back then, although that paint was horrid. Somewhere I have pics form that event.

Glad its in good hands where it will get used and enjoyed.

Thanks! We struggled over making major changes, but needed to update it a bit. The paint still looks great 16 years later - thankfully it was not wild like when it was purple and yellow. If you have any pics, would love to see them. I'm putting together a website and Facebook page for the car to preserve it's history. Already talked to Troy at SEMA in 2015 about it, and he had some fun stories about his parents when they took it on the road.

It will take some digging, but I will find them and get them to you. Probably not the best pics, but they are yours when I find them.

Awesome. Whenever you have time, I'm in no hurry to get the website setup - it will take a lot of time and research to get all of the facts straight.

Awesome car, spent a lot of time with it on Power Tours and shooting it for Hot Rod TV a million years ago. Congrats!

desids 05-30-2017 10:34 PM

If you have pictures of it on the tour, would love to get some. I believe Troy's parents took it on the tour, so would like to see pictures with them if you come across any.

Awesome ride. If it were mine I would need seats with headrests, or I would get constant whiplash from accelerating every time I drove it

Hi Desi,

I have been cleaning my attic office and I found a stack of Quadra Due Brochures from Summit Racing. Do you have any interest in them. If so I would be more then happy to ship them to you.
