T-56 Reverse a real SOB!!
Just drove my car for the first time this weekend . After going over everything with Troy he told me reverse was a little hard to get into !!! Well I would be okay with a little hard but I literally have to use two hands to put this thing in reverse. I guess my question is, is this normal ??? I did have the trans completely up graded from the stock unit so I'm wondering if this is the reason for it being so hard. Just checking to hear if anyone else has this problem .

You are having to overcome the reverse lockout spring, because the solenoid is not retracted. I plan to use this on my next build and have it incorporated into the harness. You could wire it in fairly easily to your setup using the brake circuit to activate the solenoid.

Totally agree with Z06Vette... I had the same issue until I hacked the solenoid into my brake light switch. Plan to install the American Powertrain Lock-out solenoid switch (http://americanpowertrain.com/i-2388...e-6-speed.html ) as I've scared myself downshifting from 6th with the brakes on and almost slid in to reverse.

Please post up more driving experiences for this awesome car when you get the little gremlins sorted out. Pretty cool to see it on the road and congrats for sure !!

If using an LS engine & OEM ECM, you can add it the circuit to control the solenoid. Program the ECM for manual trans. That is what I did.

You can have the brake activate it. Or you can use the ECM to activate it. I prefer ECM method.. since it's tunable (unlocked and locked parameters) by vehicle speed. But if you don't have a spare ECM pin laying around.. brake power and a ground to the other wire works well. We did both on Glassman's car. He's running ECM controlled now.

Yeah, I wired mine to my brake lights too. Works like a charm.

Handy post - we're nearing completion of our LSA/TR6060 install and we were wondering how the GMP LSA controller kit would go with this

Again you are all overthinking this. Buy the box i posted, run a power and ground, 2 wires to the lockout switch, and 1 wire to the Vss signal and your done. Works like a factory car. over 5mph you cant put the car into reverse. Anything under works like butter

Randy that's a nice setup!

Had to laugh at this --- because so many people attempt to overengineer stuff.... that usually is a pretty simple electrical solution. An On/Off switch vs using a laptop to run something....LOL Mario --- It's about damn time you puts some miles on that poor thing! Beat on it. That's what cars are built for. |
Randy, did you tap into the VSS such that this sensor is wired to your ECU and to the lockout control module at the same time?

here you go. Easier for me to show you how it works with the car off.

Mine isn't even close to being that easy . Come to find out Troy did install the lockout module so I'm going to bring it to my shop next weekend and find out what's going on. |
Mine is wired into the brake light switch. When I touch the brakes, I can hear it. I would expect you should be able to hear the engagement with your system as well, and if you don't, it's not working...
Good luck. |

Hopefully yer Ridler ride will pose less riddles...soon. :P |
Thanks for the motivation...
Well after putting 1700 miles on my car since being road worthy I have been working on a number of punch list items. Reading this post motivated me to think about how my reverse has always been a workout. I finally took the pigtail loose on the reverse solenoid and was getting voltage when the key was turned on so I figured bad solenoid. :bang:
After some more digging I managed to get to the bolt holding it in and removed the entire solenoid I tested with the wire attached and the entire assembly hanging down and when the key was energized still no release of the pin. I disconnected it and brought it out from under the car and as soon as I looked at it under good lighting I saw that one of the pins was bent over and not making contact. Woo Hoo I straightened it up reconnected and tested it and it worked. Back in the car, reverse is now no effort, as it should be. I am using the ecm and VSS signal for control with modified stock harness that I sent to Speartech. :goggles: :gitrdun: :flag2: |
I did the brake light thing at first. Grinding on downshifts coming into exits a few times made me change it to a momentary switch.
I will switch to one of those slick units one of these days. |
Just ordered one.

What problems? Ya cant dent it if ya cant drive it.
Anyways, great dinners with ya..if your out this way, lemme know, you can stay at "Casa de la Pamela" (wifeys house, i get the garage) |
$250 for that kit!!!!!???? That's crazy. If you are running EFI & GM computer, let the ecm do it for you, maybe have $30 in parts, add the circuit to the ECM, run some wires, crimp some terminals, done.
I can spend $220 somewhere else. |
Right. If you have a GM ecm, or an aftermarket ecm that is configurable to perform that function, that is the best way to do it.
But not everyone has that capability. |
**raises hand** :D
I bought the GRC lock out kit when I first installed the T56, it worked great when I had the vss from the dakota digital gauges hooked to the stock ECM in my car. When I took the ECM out, the reverse lockout quit working as well. Two years later, I still haven't found time to crawl under the dash to figure out what to rehook it too so it gets a speed signal. Sounds like a good project for tomorrow morning. |
