Starting from scratch, your thoughts on this?
I would really like to squeeze a wider tire in the rear, maybe a 285 or wider out back...but was not sure how to achieve that without a mini tube. I would think I could roll the fenders and gain a little clearance with that way, but what else could I do??? Am I stuck with a 275 all the way around even on a 1969?
I have checked out the qa1 coil over kit @ CPP: I then figured I could pair this with a set of their upper control arms: Get a set of the BMR bolt in sub frame connectors |
You are pretty much maxed out with a 275 unless you start trimming a considerable amount of lip or some aggressive rolling. Not sure it makes sense for an extra 3/8" of tire width. Not sure how you are getting a 275 tire up front but in both cases you will need to nail the backspacing. Not much room for error....

Only way to run a 275 up front on a stock subframe is with Ridetech Tru-Turn and even then there is guys who tried and failed. I chose to be cautious and ran 255 with Tru-Turn. You absolutely have to nail the backspacing and run a fair bit of negative camber.

Carl Casanova has been running 275s on his stock subframed 68 Camaro for years and he autocrosses/road races the car. If I remember correctly he is running 17x9.5 with 5.5 BS up front with 275/40/17. I have had the same tire combo on the front of mine and driven it.
You can also accomplish this with Speedtechs UCAs/LCAs, AFX spindles and shorter fast ratio steering arms that are shimmed. However, what are your goals? Why the need for 275s up front? |
Carl runs a bunch of camber up front. At least that used to be the case to make it work.
I'm with Don, 10mm isn't worth the trouble. If you want more traction, go with a better tire or shock package. |

Starting to think that the SPC control arms are a good way to go for adjustability and a 275 up front is gonna be tough! 255 may be the answer with a nice sticky tire!!!!

The SPC's can work, nothing really "wrong" with them. However, I ended up ditching them for a set of Speedtech arms as I liked the construction better and had a much easier time getting the alignment specs I was looking for. I couldn't get a decent amount of Caster without worrying about how few threads were left in the turnbuckle. Others have had more luck, I just didn't. Plus, once you get the alignment where you want it, you're really not likely to change it unless you're a hardcore track guy or major tinkerer. That just wasn't me.

Are you going with SPC lowers too? What is your caster goal? Trying to get a lot of caster with the stock lower arm can put the wheel off center in the fender and lead to rubbing. Better to use a lower with a relocated lower ball joint.

Look at the SCCA road racers of the time if you want to "flare"it to fit the size tires you want.

Okay, reached out to a great friend of mine who build race cars for a living and has helped me figure out the reverse engineering effect for this thing.
We are starting with the spindles and working out. Obviously this is somewhat with a wheel/tire in mind,,,,square stance for now, with mini tube in the future. More than likely going with the ridetech tru turn for the 17x10 with 275/40. Working on a wheel setup now. Gonna match it up with a good set of springs and leafs for now, with minitube in the future. I'm convesing myself that you don't need coilovers to have a great driving care, cut you need to caster to go around corners...so-to-speak. Lol. I know it's more than that. That's why I have a racing buddy! |
