Scam, Sham or Deal?

I'm selling my customized daily driver pick-up and I have it advertised in the auto trader and on Mautofied.com(for modified vehicles). I received this email from a guy wanting to buy my truck.
:
Hello,

I am interested in purchasing your GMC Sierra 1500.Please confirm asking price if it is still available.

Regards,
Jim

after emailing him back he sent me this:

Hello,

Thanks for your immediate response. Asking price is okay. Presently I am off the shores of Angola where I work as a Drilling Engineer on the coastal explorations with Exxon Mobil Oilfields. So I will need to ask a colleague from my home town in Texas to send you a Cashier's Check. Please send me your address, full name and telephone number so that I can instruct my colleague to send you the Check. Since that is the only means of payment I can offer now due to my present location. Do not bother about the shipping to Angola I have a shipping agent who will come over to the USA to ship some of my items from my home in Texas so he would also come over to your house for pick up of the truck. Please reply ASAP.

Regards,
Jim

I spoke to a person from my bank and said to get a P.O. BOX and have him send the cashiers check and see if it goes threw. Then if the moneys good then release the truck. The only problem is the transferring of names on the truck since he's overseas.
What do you think about this? Does it sound like a scam???? Help me!
Marcus

It is very much a scam. You can have fun as I do and lead them on if you like. Sometimes I get bored buying and selling stuff that I tend to make scammers very unhappy but getting them all excited then pulling the plug at the last minute. But yes, 100 percent scam. Never do a Westen Union anything unless it's family. Also these checks they send look very real, but they are fake. They will tell you as soon as you have the check to send it, and by the time you get word from the baank that is it a bad check, they are already gone.

wow, I've never heard of that scam. I'd try the PO box thing.

race-rodz 08-05-2006 09:29 PM

its a scam...but i say go ahead and let them send a fake check to a po box and wait till it fails to clear, you can always spice it up a bit by tellin them that the check was good....but the truck got stolen, and you allready spent the money on the horse races.

A few give-a-ways it's a scam...No one from Texas would:

use the word "colleague" more than once.
capitalize "Check"
say "I have a shipping agent"

That is such a scam. I saw something about that on Chevelles.com in their scam bulletin. You can always check there for more information on it. Also, the grammar will always give it away too.

Scam for sure!! But do as above!!!

He will send you a check for a coulpe grand to much. He will tell you his freind screwed up, and ask you to return him a CC Check or probably a wire since he is out of the country for $1500 or something, and offer you $500 for your trouble and cost. In the meantime, your fake check from him bounces, yours to him clears, and he wins.

So, if you want to have some fun. Make him send it Fed Ex priority overnight, will cost him $25 or so. Then tell him your baby spilled something on it and ruined the check, and now he needs to Fed Ex again. Let him invest $50 in it.

The Piece a ****!

Thanks guys,
I'm going to talk more to the bank tomorrow and see what I shall do. Probably the PO Box thing ,then if it's a fake, I'm going to send him back a bomb.
Just kidding....

what if you accept the deal and he sends you a check and the other guy shows up the next day to pickup the truck? or the other guy just shows up with the check? id be real careful. im sure its a scam.

It's a scam! I promise with all my heart it is a scam. I have seen dozens of them, just last week we had one with a friend of mine, might be the same guy or ring of guys the letter is so identical. We have a blast f--king with them. Don't waste your time with the bank, this guy has you all excited now thinking you have it sold. it's a scam, tell him to go away, or find away to make it cost him.

ZZ3ElCamino 08-06-2006 10:28 PM

Sounds identical to a scam someone tried to pull on my buddy. He was selling a 5th wheel sand trailer, and this was almost the exact story word for word. The scam artist on the other end actually sent him a cashiers check and once my buddy caught on to the scam h etried to contact him. The person was no where to be found and the check turned out to be a fake.

sorry bro.. this is a scam in its most obvious.. :captain:

yep a scam for sure! I had at least one of these a week when I had a car for sale on Auto Trader.com Like some others I got excited the first time and thought it was sold....then my wife informed me it was a scam, she had heard of it before. So I then played along and asked for some business info and mailing address as he said he was a auto broker, never to hear back from him, which I thought was strange since just a day before he said he had a client that wanted my car. After getting a few more of these emails (from different address but the same bs) I finally stooped as low as them and told them what I thought of their 'business', I'm sad to say it was mosty in four letter words...never got any more emails from them though!!

I just had this happen to me yesterday. I saw a complete Donovan motor, big block and fuel injected on craigslist, on the add it said 55k into this engine, and was selling for 7k, and he had pictures and it looked great, but then I e-mailed him and he said that the motor was in San Francisco, but he was in Italy, but he could ship it to me. I told him to suck something, then I deleted his add.

Rob07002 08-07-2006 10:59 AM

Yup, scam for sure! Get the po box, take a dump in a box and send it to him!

Think about it....why not just buy a truck in ANGOLA? Seems awfully complicated for him to buy a truck sight unseen and ship it to the other side of the world. Hmmmmm.....

Project_Gotham 08-07-2006 07:01 PM

Thanks again guy's there are a couple more people interested in the truck here in Texas. Hopefully one will buy it.
