LS3 starter choice

Which starter did you guys use for your LS3 with a Manual trans ?? The GMPP instruction sheet states use the 10465385 starter. I have been coming across another starter, #299. How about the starter bolts ? Thanks!

That part number is stupid money, it might be an awesome starter....

Try this.
ACDelco Starters 12617229

ACDelco 11610787 bolts

ACDelco PT170 GM Original Equipment 1-Way Female Black Multi-Purpose Pigtail to plug into the starter.

All in for less than 150.

Or a Powermaster 9201 comes with bolts and has a bolt on connection for the 'S' wire.

Thank you Donny.

I like that starter too. That's the gen 5 Camaro unit. There is also a nice OEM heat shield that mounts to it. I used it on my Cougar.

Thank you Andrew, I ordered the parts.

Well guys I picked up the #229 starter. Man its real close to my Holley/Hooker 2262 headers. Forget the heat shield..

Hi Paul. I have never had to shim an LS starter.

I love powermaster starters over GM.
I have no experience with LS motors.
I run BBC.
That being said,
My first GM starter was axially offset and no shimming could fix it.
I went with Powermaster because:

1. I can adjust axial offset.
2. I can clock the starter.
3. I can use all three bolts to secure starter to block.

(I just bought a new AC/Delco starter for my zero turn and it has a stamp:
Made in Korea)

Powermaster rules.

For LS engines the factory starters work great and they are affordable. No need to go with anything else imho.

Did some quick checking and for the starter the other part numbers are (Saving for as much my information as anyone else):

12617229 ACDelco GM Original Equipment Starter
12101763 Pigtail CONNECTOR
11610787 Starter BOLT Qty 2
11571131 Shield BOLT Qty 3
12629286 SHIELD

I realize this thread is old but wanted to add this bit of info. If you're using an early Quicktime bellhousing for a Magnum transmission with a *round* hole for the starter, an LS3 starter may cause some interference to fit. The earlier LS1 starter mounts about 1/8" differently and fits perfectly to both the engine, flywheel, and bellhousing. Later Quicktime bellhousings have an oval opening for the starter so the LS3 starter will fit, no problem.
