Building a LS powered 88 Camaro, hoping to do some track days and some autocross.

I wanted one of these so bad in high school. The IROC with T-tops to be exact.

LS1-IROC 02-02-2018 10:15 AM

Bitchin, looking forward to seeing your progress. You really stuffed that LS back! Curious about your rack and pinion set-up. Will you be using the factory spindle arms?

Vince@Meanstreets 02-02-2018 10:38 AM

nice having a blank slate like that. :gitrdun:

I've built a simple cage and fabed up some headers.

WSSix 02-02-2018 05:37 PM

Welcome to the site. Good luck with the build.

Musclerodz 02-02-2018 06:08 PM

The only car I ever regretted selling was my '90 IROC.

Zspoiler 02-03-2018 07:09 AM

Nice build .Do you remember the IROC and Trans Am cars of that era?

I feel the same way about my '87 Trans Am.

Where in the Hills are you? Do you have a shop? I get out there occasionally.

qnitro 02-03-2018 11:00 AM

Actively looking as well. Mine was white G92 350 hardtop, grey interior, 16" wheels, decal delete car, had 17k when I bought it.

Where are you going to park it? LOL...

Cool build! I'm building up a track-oriented third gen myself... not quite as involved as yours though. Good luck with it, I'll be following along for sure.

guess you havent had many cars! :)

looks like third gens are still fresh in everyones mind! my son still has my 87 TA that I bought in 91 and I'd like it back to do a LS swap as I already did STB, SFC, 1LE brakes, LS1 trans am seats and a 383 with SLP full exhaust, man that could take corners! if I look at any more 3rd gen builds... :badidea:
Nice track car your building sorry to hijack - It's got me thinking

my goal is to keep the headers and exhaust from scraping the ground. And I have the rear end mounted.

With some more money and time I got a little more progress. I have the battery mounted and most of the interior made.

I love 3rd Gen F-bodies. Besides owning a very fun 1989 GTA for a few years, I think the wheelbase & aero make them great candidates for autocross & track cars.

We have some customers running & winning SCCA National events with our suspension setups, but no tube chassis Track-Warriors ... yet. :)

Is that one of our RSRT Quik-Adjust Top Link Mounts?

Yes, I bought that and a watts link from you. You didn't have your Big Book out when I started this project. I think if you had I'm not sure I could have resisted cutting the front off and using one your Track-Warrior front ends. In my opinion those are coolest front ends I ever seen.

Thank you.

We have a Dealer that's planning a 3rd Gen Camaro build with on of the Track-Warrior front clips, as well as the rear. He might keep the factory floor or cut it out & make it smooth. It's not in build mode yet.

I know the strut front end will never be on par with a double A arm front end, but I thought I would try to make it better than it was. The Sweet rack is the right length and I made a spindle that corrected all the short comings of the stock spindles.

Good Job.

I notice you have the aluminum bodied struts from DSE with the JRI shock insert. You will want to get with Kyle at DSE to exchange this for the Steel bodied version they have now. The aluminum bodied version should be fine on the street, but will break under race loads. I know ... I've seen us do it. LOL (Stolen from a Ron White Comedy CD).

The new Steel Bodied version is what we use in all of our 3rd Gen Camaro & Firebird front suspension packages in our Catalog on pages 66-69 HERE.

Best wishes.

You have done some impressive fab work on this track toy and it looks like it will be a lot of fun.

Now that you have revised the issues with the stock strut and spindle setup you won’t be dissapointed much by the lack of am SLA.

I can tell you from my own experience with a strut based track car that any weak point around the strut spindle connection will be exposed very quickly once you mount reasonably sticky tires and get on a fast track. I had a failure in the same area on my setup (thankfully not a breakage) so I would heed Ron’s advice on swapping to the steel Strut housing.

Neat build.

Thanks for the heads up. I bought the struts over a year ago and if it was a option I was unaware of it. Thanks again.

It was not an option a year ago. They only came aluminum bodied. Now, after we had one break, they are not available in the aluminum body any more. Only steel.

I started on the exhaust and with limited space I decided to go with a large single.

I also took a pic while it was on the ground.

Nice work on the stainless--a single is staying true to form with the car! Great work so far!

You're right I am trying to keep costs down a little. I have done everything myself so far except some machining and when the time comes the wiring. The thirdgen is not real popular, but I want to try to make one that is somewhat cool. Cool to me anyway.

89 RS 04-14-2018 11:22 PM

Nice build! I'm definitely staying tuned in on your progress. If you don't mind me asking-- What are the dimensions on the wheels? The wheel fitment looks great.

ur-n-8 04-15-2018 01:32 PM

18"x11" with 6-1/4" bs

Yukon Cornelius 04-18-2018 04:12 PM

What size tires are you running? I'm thinking of 275/35/18 on all corners.

ur-n-8 04-19-2018 07:48 AM

I have altered several things to make the fit, but yes that’s the size in the photo.

Yukon Cornelius 04-19-2018 07:50 AM

How far back did you push the engine back?
