Thunderhill March 9--Speed SF
Since SuperChevyMustangDave didn't do it yet, I thought I'd post a linky to the next track day I'll be doing/attempting (as will Dave G.), given sufficient luck and cooperative drought circumstances: https://www.speedsf.com/events/2018/3/9/thunderhill-east-3-mile/.
It's on a Friday, so you can use your vacation, retirement, sick day, or whatever, and avoid some of the stupid weekend traffic . . . |
The motor is out of Old Yeller -- and is at the builder -- who conveniently managed to break his leg bad enough to require surgery....
The new Sutton car - at this point - is a body only.... I feel I have to let Dave have a private track day on Thunderhill so he can get his bearings without any pressure to perform. LOL I can hear the lap records being broken already. |
Far too much of my time spent awake includes people's excuses for why they cannot perform (no, I don't work in porn). What about the "Big Wang" car? Doesn't it need some exercise? Surely Dave could help with the belt situation (or you just don't rev it that high--calculate a bit), with some remote assistance via Skype or something from Ron S. . . .
Can we at least use the garage for sun/rain protection/beer storage? You're probably right in not going. We'll probably need snow tires. Quote:

You won't need the garage -- Dave doesn't use tools.... Big Wang needs the power rack that is here with me in Eye De Ho..... After I spent a grand on a new belt tensioner it seems to be fine now.... It was just typical of a car I buy from Charley..... |
Good work Paul. I was meaning to post something up.
As I told Paul, I ran with Speed SF in December at Laguna Seca and was impressed with them. They take the driver meeting seriously and run a nice tight ship. They also don't overload the day with too many cars. Both things Norcal Shelby is not too great at. Of course when you're a professional like Weld your attendance is not required at the driver meetings. :action-smiley-027: First time at Thunderhill... looking forward to it. |
I havent been on this forum in quite some time now but Basher mentioned to me that a few of these Lateral G guys do actually use their junk. I log on and low and behold you actually do!!
I am going to try and make it down to T-Hill for this if some parts show up in the next few weeks. For those of you that live near there, is the weather usually pretty nice? I would love it if you said dry...Oregon is monsooning today. Looking forward to meeting some new people as well. Sean |
That would be awesome to see the truck in action again, Sean! You might want to give the Speed SF guys a call, just to be sure they won't give you any problems about having a truck (there's usually some kind of disclaimer in this area, so as to prevent people from signing up with tow trucks or brodozers).
The weather here has been ridiculous (good), but that's normal. The scene out my back door is pretty good today, although V-Day is usually pretty decent . . . Quote:

I would love to go but just picked
up the fresh Pantera engine. Not enough time to get it together. I will be there April 9th with Checkered Flag. You guys have a great time Bob |

With your track experience I doubt you'll have a problem - but if you want email Patrick Chio <[email protected]> with any questions. They are a good group of guys. |
Beaters and fancy beer, sounds like a hoot!
:thumbsup::flag2: |
Hmmm, sounds interesting. Now that my car is back, its time to break it again. Rinse, repeat. Might just be there if the dates work....cheers
|
I think I need another 6 months or so before I can join in on this kind of Left Coast fun...but I'm looking forward to it for sure. You'll have fun and be safe.

That's an awful lot of "ho humming" right there.... You need to just sign up -- Dave can use some company. |

My guess is its not looking good for running with them if its about looks I am totally screwed and the truck is too =) Ill follow up with you cats when I hear back from Patrick. :thankyou: |

If it’s about looks, all y’all in trouble!
:D |
By "beaters," Dan undoubtedly means cars that do not exist solely to absorb polishing efforts and questions about paint at cars & coffee events.
By "fancy beer," Dan surely imagines fine selections like Steel Reserve, even though Speed SF distinctly prohibits the presence of such substances at their events. Quote:

I’ll do just about anything...twice. Steel Reserve isn’t one of them.:flag2: |
I just received an email from Patrick that my Truck will not be allowed to participate in any SpeedSF events.
Sean, Unfortunately, after discussing with our officials. Your truck is not allowed at our event. Patrick Chio Speed SF Track Events Speedsf.com I asked him if he could give me any reasons behind it. Seems very different. Most every other club or event I have run with has been super excited to have some different sign up and even more happy when it can keep up with $80,000.00 sports cars. Maybe next time I can make it down there guys. Thanks for posting this event up. Sean |
I just sent Patrick an email.
You’re welcome 😁 |

If that is the kind of crowd they are I would not be a good fit. Here is the funny thing. I originally emailed him, sent him a description of the truck, my background, all of the instructor schools I have done in the last two years and a list of all the events....it was very clear that it was a truck. He then asked for some photos of the TRUCK... Of course I obliged and sent him a few photos of the truck. I asked him this evening and he sited their rules and that there are no trucks or SUV's allowed for safety purposes. I call total b.s. no trucks allowed is fine just tell me that up front but when you ask for photos and run it past your officials there is another reason. I don't believe in not telling the truth as hard as it is to hear sometimes I would rather hear the truth than some bull**** story. I'll get down there to run with you guys this spring. Sean |

No trucks....other than this one found on their site, running Thunderhill.
Whatever. No worries, plenty of other events. You know, with you not going, Dave just got faster. Lol |

Sorry, wrong picture...😂

That's a big ball of suck, Sean--we were looking forward to seeing the truck kicking the surprised snot out of some snooty punks. That said, it seems that much of the track and autocross crowd has not been made aware of the abilities and builds of pro-tour pick-ups. Perhaps they've also missed that whole NASCAR truck series, in which they race pick-up-like things . . .
Maybe it's time for another LS-powered Volvo or something like that from you. We all know you'll be back with something far more imaginative than a C5, not that that's a bad car . . .:welder: Quote:

Bummer man....
|
Yeah... That would rub me the wrong way as well. Most promoters are clamoring for attendees at their events...guess this one doesn't have that issue.
Sucks Sean but there are still plenty of other chances to beat your junk up at other events that will welcome your awesome build. |
There's always Norcal Shelby's Spring Sprint there April 28-29. They're Greg's favorite group to run with.

Well? I know at least one of you had plenty of time to take a few pics....:action-smiley-027:

Let me take a shot at it, you tell me if I’m close.
No list, no prep, bad tires and it was a cold track...plus the sun was in your eyes and you couldn’t get your Nano to play the right “driving songs”. If you had an SLA and more seat time you’d be the fastest guy out there....am I close? :knokwood: I’m sure by now you’ve got it pulled apart, it’s been two days, and have parts on the way to resolve the issue....:G-Dub: race car Your scorching lap time is now my target. :flag2::thumbsup: |
^^ You've been hanging around Weld a bit much there, sport. :theresa:
Paul, Chuck and I had a great time. Nothing beats a day at the track. Actually ON the track. Get off the internet and try it sometime Basher. |
Quote:
I'm glad you were out doing it and had fun, how could you not with Paul? I'll be on track by Spring and the goal is to head south in August to try and beat your 2:19 lap time.:flag2: ps, I haven't seen Weld in weeks |

See ya in August, sport. 🍺 |
It was an excellent day--Dave picked well. The weather was absolutely perfect, not even windy, which is almost weird. There were only about 40 cars for the whole day, so groups were not clogged at all. Speed SF put on a great track day, short of the whole refusal to allow Sean's truck.
My car worked great, up to a point. In my third session, I started getting some kind of power cut that only happened when turning right after about seven laps. Otherwise, I was having a good time, hitting about 120 on the straight before applying my still somewhat low-confidence brakes. Last time out, I had the stupid speed limiter (unknowingly) sticking me at 95-98, reminding me that the car's PCM was from a Suburban, not a Corvette. Now, it's set at about 217 . . . This was my first time doing the bypass configuration, which is perhaps a bit more interesting when you're seeing it from so far back in the car (back seat area). It takes some getting used to, and I pretty much hit it like your grandma every time. Dave's car worked great, until it didn't. I didn't see Dave in the first session, but in the second, I passed him, only because his clutch said "F-you!" My friend Chuck, who drove his totally stock 1985 Mazda Rx7 120+ miles to the track (and back home), ripped through all of his sessions without an issue. Go figure. There was very minimal carnage for the day, short of a guy in a McLaren who lightly tagged a wall. Small groups probably helped. Nobody brought a real camera, but there is phone-cam evidence of Dave using tools.:flashie: |
Quote:
Paul. Statements like that without evidence could destroy your credibility. :) I guess the fact the car remained broke could seen to be proof of Dave picking up a tool. :EmoteClueless: Isn't this how BMF got started? A failed transmission at a track day. I wonder what "upgrades" are planed for the Fox "while it's apart " I'm glad to hear you're getting the Falcon dialed in. That thing is cool. Get the porting tools out and go to work on that 12a/13b. Those little rotarys scoot with a port job. |

The Rx7, supposedly, will be getting a 5.0 Ford some time soon. We'll see. |
