I must be insane!

I have been a car nut for 40 years, My first car was a 76 455 4sp Black Trans AM. I guess I am trying to relive my youth. Going to build this all myself in my own Home Shop/Garage.
I started with a $200 71 Formula 4spd RUSTY CARCASS bought out of Wisconsin. I have replaced almost every panel except the roof and outer cowl. I have installed a DSE Quadralink, Minitubs, Subframe Connectors, and Hydorformed Subframe. Wilwood Aero 6 Brakes, and have Been working with Jason Rushforth on a set of wheels. LT4, Ultimate Headers, TKO-600, and a 9". Here are a few picks of along the way. Stan |
Nice!!!

Wow! You’ve got the makings of a great project car, love those early 70’s Camaro’s. Any thoughts on an exhaust system yet? Can’t wait to see the finished product. Until then good luck on the build!

Will build my own out of Stainless Mandrel Bends. Not sure on mufflers, Want it reasonably quiet though!

Wow...look forward to seeing this build come together.

I love 2nd gen builds and looking forward to seeing this one. On a side note I have a set of NOS door skins if you need them. I bought them and then realized they were not for a Camaro. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |
Maybe a little insane but when it's finished you can look back at what you built, very nice so far. That engine will make it fun to drive:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thanks for the compliments!
The goal is to do all the work myself. It will take a few years, but it is my midlife crisis car! I have done most of the work before in some capacity on other cars in my past. I did the muscle car thing for quite a few years, then the street rod thing. I sold off a couple cars to build this one. I still have a 55 Chevy 210 (pretty rotten, but has a lot of local history) Also a fiberglass 32 Ford 3 Window coupe and a 29 Ford roadster pickup. Neither of these are enjoyable to drive. Now its time to build something you can drive hard and enjoy! |
Good job on the work. Keep us updated. I too love 2nd gens.
|
Lot of work you've done! Looks great.

Sounds great! When the timing is right give us a ring at 707-544-4761 and we can run through all the muffler options that may be of interest, as well as hook it up with forum member pricing. Until then we’ll keep following your build thread. |

I've been slacking, this is all the progress I have made.
Blew it back apart to put on rotisserie to do some work. Fit the AC, and welded in firewall plate, Removed roof skin, blasted the inner structure, DP primed, and installed new skin. Now trying to figure out how to narrow the rear seat upholstery to maintain the original pattern. In the last pic you can see the patter and I need to narrow the seat back 2" per side. The band around the insert is only 1-3/4" I will figure it out, just chewing on it for a while. in the meantime next will be raising the area under the rear seat bottoms for more muffler clearance. |

Looking good!
I really like your cold air setup, well done on customizing it. What system did you start with? |
I used a 2017 Z06 (LT4) filter box, it also has the boss for the MAF so that's a bonus. Then I used a Airaid U-Build-It Intake tube kit (part number 100-400) kit to connect the dots.
I made the sheet metal box and dimple died holes to seal the system to the front corner of the radiator support. Stan |

Wow!! So impressed with your work!!
Just killin’ it! |
Awesome build, can't wait to see the progress!
|
Thanks everyone for the encouragement!
I'm just a 1 man show with a 50 hour a week real job so the progress is slow, but in the end I can say I built it myself in my garage! |
Time for a couple updates.

After a 1-1/2 months of playing with my old Consew machine, I am happy with my narrowed rear seat.
Used NOS comfortweave and Ultraleather. Seat back is narrowed 3-1/2" while trying to maintain a stock appearing pattern. The bottoms are notched for the tubs. I Used french seams in a few locations that seem to always seperate on the stock covers. I had some old green material to "practice" on. The last pic is the final test fit in the car. |
and a little more accomplished

blasted, used 6 bags of media.
Didn't want to chance warping the quarters or roof by blasting, so I DA'd with 80 to bare metal, the E-Coat came off pretty easy. Epoxied, mixed 4 quarts of DP74 (red oxide) with 1 quart of DP90 (black) to get the correct color. Why I don't know as it is not a resto. Anyway used 2-1/2 quarts. Black Epoxy, DP90, shot black only on the frame rails and the rockers as its hard to paint up to the bedliner without seeing the undercoat in places. and I taped off where bolts go and wanted black there. Bedliner, Used U-Pol Raptor 1 gallon kit. wished I had another 1/2 gallon, but it covered well, 2 coats overall and 3 in the rear wheel wells. And last but not least been playing with the color match. I want to be as close to the original Lucerne blue as I can get. the left is Axaltas mix, the center is the original on my cowl side and the right is PPG. This is gonna take some work. Stan |
This is great work and I've enjoyed catching up on this thread. Looking forward to more updates!

This thread doesn't disappoint :Tomcat:!

More progress....
Body work has begun yuck I HATE sanding. on a positive note I finally nailed down the color. OCD says has to be a great match to original, other side says LT4!!!! who cares. Anyway after several rounds of what the books say and what the camera says, I bought some of the toners and tinted the PPG code #26 Lucerne Blue. I kept track of the amounts with my scale. My PPG store was able to take my formula and mix it. I did a spray out and I like it. Here are a few pics... The one next to my cowl shows my mix compared to a small spot I left of the original paint. The pics with the spoiler welting molded in color is from James (wizard61 on PY forum) And now, back to sanding!!!!! |
The quality of your build is very impressive. Keep at it!
|
Look forward to watching your progress.
|
Love that shade of blue!!
|
cool project
|
Very cool project! I had a 1977 Bandit TA when it was a couple years old. Brother had a Silver '78 and paint was shot before it was 3 yrs old. Got to really like those cars.
|
Lucy blue is a nice color choice
