Hackster's Need for Swede 😁

Some may remember the F100 he built with an LS and single turbo, followed by another F100 with a Coyote and 6spd that he tracked all over the west coast. Well, he’s gone back to his roots and is well on his way with his next track toy.

One of the last 240’s he built. It’s kinda ok I guess, if you’re into super clean, sorted drivers that get 25+ mpg and don’t scream “look at me”.

Flash68 05-07-2018 11:39 AM

Yes please! Very cool.

I was just looking at the take-off LSA blower swaps people been doing on LS1's... would be interested in how you did yours and what parts you used.

rustomatic 05-07-2018 01:14 PM

Excellent! I may have predicted this a little while ago . . .

WSSix 05-07-2018 05:28 PM

This is cool. I honestly had no idea people built these cars up until a few popped up on bring a trailer. Some of them look seriously badass. Thanks for keeping us updated, basher.

rickpaw 05-07-2018 06:46 PM

Cool.

Will be following along, as i've been wanting to do one of these.

DBasher 05-07-2018 07:08 PM

I just sent him a text letting him know I got this started for him, hopefully he’ll jump on and continue with the updates. The build plan also includes a 6spd and I’m pretty sure 315’s squared, it’s going to be a wicked little box.

SSLance 05-08-2018 08:27 AM

I like it!!

Hackster does great work and I'd be very interested to follow this build along!!

Ketzer 05-08-2018 01:51 PM

I'm a huge fan of different.
Hope he joins up and posts!

gnx7 05-08-2018 08:50 PM

I love that body style.

I have a set of CCW C10 18x10 and 18x12 rims if that runs a Ford bolt pattern. I actually have 2 fronts and 3 rears for $2200 if that is something he wants to do :)

They are my spare rims for the RX-7.

Its really a good way to go. From what I have seen so far a very stock 6.0 with a good tune is high 500's for not much $$$ invested and all OEM parts. This is what I like the most. OEM stuff is just so well made.

They are very similar to the foxbody mustang and with a little work can be made to handle very well. The 2 doors are stiffer than most unibody cars. The biggest problem at this point is that they are old and dont have much aftermarket support but as far as a good foundation, they are great. I have built 5 or 6 in the past, nothing like this will be though.

Thanks for the kind words Lance.....I hope this is faster and lighter than the F100 at least that is my goal.

Thanks Mark, they are cool cars once you ditch all the factory crappy parts =)

Ill shoot you a PM for the wheels as I am pretty interested.

Thanks all for the encouragement especially Dan......There are some awesome people on this forum but also some amazing cars, fabricators and painters. I am just a garage builder trying to learn and have fun and get faster. I didnt think that this was the right place for this turd.

I am out of town this week but I will update the thread when I am home.

jarhead 05-09-2018 09:44 PM

going to follow this for sure, out of the box!

hackster 05-10-2018 03:25 PM

Well, where to start.

I built a number of cars over the past few years, the last couple have been more go fast than look pretty and I have really enjoyed using them. I built the F100 a little over 2 years ago and have loved all of the trials and tribulations. It has taken me all over the place, introduced me to a new world and met some very cool very talented drivers.

I have also learned an immense amount about driving, I have gotten faster and upgraded the truck as I did. I am still at the bottom of the pile when compared to a Danny Popp, Chad Ryker, Lazor J or anyone with a ton of seat time, but locally I can hold my own with the pickup.

So I was getting ready to upgrade the front brakes on the pickup a few months ago as I need more of them and I just had this lingering thought about building something different. Something lower, lighter with more power and a little more leg room than what the truck.

I have some experience with the Volvos from years past, and they are solid cars, getting harder to find but a very solid foundation. My buddy Pat had this one kicking around so I made a long day out of it and headed from my house in Eugene to Angels Camp, about an hour East of Stockton and picked up this gem, she is a little rough, but all there and a non rusty, non wrecked start. Well, front fender, but that is not a big deal.

It was a solo one day trip, 1244 miles but totally fun.

Headed home!!!

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8rhgkk26.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pscsjskh5a.jpg

That was the beginning....day one.

hackster 05-10-2018 03:39 PM

I recently moved away from all my friends and family of 20 years to a new town about 120 miles to the south, so all of this is done by myself, progress will be slower than past builds.

Day 2

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psstkmaque.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psdyvvfowd.jpg

Scrubbed and cleaned up. This was the point where I had to make a choice, clean it up and stuff an engine in or do the extra work and make it how it should have been.....

I am no body man.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pss6jsiq67.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psoarmajok.jpg

There were a ton of holes everywhere, as soon as you think you got them all, nope. These were all ground down and metal worked as flat as I could get them. I was pretty happy with the results considering this was done with mostly simple hand tools.

Got the welding wrapped up and got things ready for body work and primer.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psgw4zmrki.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3ajzdcof.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psxe3v181d.jpg

Ready for some primer!!!

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psydikosyz.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pswu8ulh2o.jpg

I was really happy with how the work I was doing turned out I did a lot of work on the inner shock towers to get them cleaned up and flat. I left the factory waves in the inner fenders there as they are kind of a thin with the volvos and they add some personality.

This was numerous coats of filler, sand, filler sand, filler sand, I shot some EVERCOAT high build primer on this and scuffed all that up and got rid of any imperfections. I then loaded everything up and took to a professional for them to paint it.

Turned out good. One spot on the cowl panel that I am not happy with but its done so move on!!

Oh man, I am realizing that I really have issues with cars. I love projects. A friend of mine built this thing for a "customer" of his who owned some strip clubs. It was built for mud bogging thus the 37" boggers on it. He went to ummmm well he went away for a few years and the truck just sat, for like 8 years outside. A good friend of mine bought it and cleaned it up a lot, but kind of lost interest in it because he could not get it to run at all, it started and ran really rough when we picked it up. It drove off of the trailer at my house and that was it, would not restart or run. So I did the usual, drained the fuel out of it, pulled the injectors and checked the spray pattern on them, verified they all ran like they should and put it back together. 16 new spark plugs and same problem. Hemi buddy of mine told me to pull all the coil packs and clean the connections under the springs....sure as **** fired right up. I ended up having to re tune the truck as the previous tune was horrible.

So its rowdy. 700HP 426 HEMI crate engine in it, ATLAS Transfer case, 1410 drivelines, Kingpin DANA 60 up front, King Coilovers, Thuren track bar, all DOM steering with PSC Hydro assist, AAM 11.5 in the rear, 40" Cooper STT PRO tires on Method Beadlocks, Fiberglass Fenders and bedsides.

I have a bunch of work into it redoing some of the older stuff but a lot of cleaning and working out all of the little bugs. Its been fun, drives shockingly well for 40's and only has about an inch of suspension lift.

hackster 05-24-2018 08:17 AM

Well, it took a fair bit to get it all put together to this point. I didnt realize that the VVT really needed to go in order to be reliable with the manual so I had to tear things apart again....

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psukocqlnz.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pso7yezezg.jpg

New stock oil pump going on.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psp4fak6bo.jpg

Some home built tools to get this turd back together.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psfsa6ovql.jpg

New cover, timing gear set and chain, factory gaskets and she is back in one piece now.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psi2wmldom.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps5xdkcjmk.jpg

Turning back to the car, little bodywork and paint on the booster. This is supposed to be great paint, catalyzed with a 50% flattener in it. It dried a little less gloss than this but still a little too shiny.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psjay0jor8.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3t8yefck.jpg

hackster 05-24-2018 08:26 AM

I pulled the firewall panels out and sent them in for powedrcoat and they came back really nice, they are 20% gloss and were blasted and coated with some other brackets I have.

So I got those installed with all new hardware and got the booster in. Looks nice and clean. I am shooting for a clean and tidy engine bay on this thing, but not over the top custom shaved and tucked everything. This thing needs to be easy to get to stuff and work on.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psnbq5t2dv.jpg

Wilwood proportioning valve installed on OEM Volvo lines, 94 mustang GT master cylinder and lots of cleaning on those lines.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psiefcntld.jpg

I did a little bit of cleaning on the crossmember, steering rack and brake lines on the chassis. I installed the new pressure hose from the rack to the power steering pump as its a bear to get to in the car once everthing is installed.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pss1nst7x4.jpg

Trans came back from the rebuilder so I got that mated up to the engine and did the first test fit.......I knew that the trans tunnel would need some work.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pszmkcixpr.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psenvbekvy.jpg

That catches us up to current. I am waiting for some parts to show up....should be here this week. Plan is to pull out, clearance tunnel, install shifter, clutch and pressure plate, remote bleeder and hydro hose and stuff the old girl in for good this weekend.

I miss the days when I had time during the week to go home and get hours of work done. Now its just the weekends so progress is slow at best.

So neat and tidy in there, looks like it fits like a glove.

Do you have any pics of the other side of the engine, showing room around the brake booster and MC?

I take it that is the stock Volvo steering rack? What are the plans for the front suspension and geometry?

Ill snap a pic tonight around the booster, there is tons of room there though. Steering shaft will be snug to the manifolds but should be no issue there. I can get to everything in the car no problem.

Stock Volvo rack yes, they are a ZF Rack and work really well.

Front suspension is pretty dialed in.

JRZ Shortened and machined double adjustable coilovers for the front. They machine the spindle and build an entire new tube and weld to the spindle for the coilover. Will be a 250lb tender spring over a 700 lb main spring to keep tension on the shock during droop.

Kaplenkhe machined adjustable upper strut mounts, roll correction spacers, upper strut tower bar with brake brace, 28 mm sway bar and machined adjustable sway bar end links.

Front hubs have been remachined to 5x114.3 bolt pattern and have long ARP studs in them. Front brakes are Factory 13" Volvo R brakes, they are a similar caliper to the late STI caliper and should be plenty of brake to stop the little car. They worked amazing on my last LS Swapped Volvo.

The lower control arms are going to remain stock for now but upgraded with all poly bushings and new lower ball joints. If I am unable to get the alignment where I need it with the big tires, I will build a longer or adjustable lower control arm.

Totally up in the air on rear suspension. Halfway thinking about doing IRS, but also want to get some seat time this summer.....may hit the track with the Solid axle and plan on that upgrade for next winter.

Sean

hackster 06-07-2018 02:29 PM

In its final resting place, transmission tunnel clearanced for the T56, ACT Clutch, pressure plate and flywheel installed, new hydraulic throwout bearing installed, clutch line hooked up to master cylinder.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psenvbekvy.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pszmkcixpr.jpg

Got it sorted out where it should be and got to work on a tranny crossmember. Used the factory camaro trans mount and adapted it to the factory Volvo crossmember.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pstaiiuszh.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8rbx1g4c.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psnj5mwduy.jpg

Turned our pretty nice. I had the nephew down helping me out with the project so I cut him loose with the DA after welding. We shot some good paint on it, same Catalyzed 20% black stuff I shot on the booster. Looks pretty good though for shooting it outside.

Had a bunch of yardwork to do yesterday so didnt get much done.

Started mocking this up....haha. You can see it isnt close to clearing.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7akqb41u.jpg

Messed around with a few ideas and this is what I came up with. I didnt like the idea of cutting out the tube all together, so I fashioned this little bridge out of some 1/8" plate and some 5/16" round bar. I know its not going to be nearly as strong as the tube that it replaced....

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psecctqdjb.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psvzzheme5.jpg

Here is why I am doing it this way.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psdrl0d2fc.jpg

Everyone said no way is that possible, never going to fit under the hood =)

Harness should be here this week so I can start messing with that. I need to figure out a radiator situation as the engine is not as far back as I had hoped for. So Radiator is going to have to move forward a little bit to fit the heat exhchanger for the intercooler and the dual fan setup.

Sean

hackster 06-07-2018 02:36 PM

With it in place I kept motoring on.

Buddy builds some killer parts, but they didnt quite fit with my application =)

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3ku5y15u.jpg

Bulkhead Connectors for all engine harness, AEM Wideband, Intercooler pump all factory senders and aftermarket senders run through these two connectors.

Also you can see the windshield wiper motor in these. Should be about all the wiring that is present on this side of the engine bay.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps282x62o3.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pswqujip0o.jpg

Under dash, like it was all meant to be there.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pszjujyayz.jpg

hackster 06-07-2018 02:41 PM

Only had a few hours to mess with it but started hacking to get a radiator in there. If you are not familiar with it, they usually mount behind this upper radiator panel, not below it. Going to keep working on the upper rad panel to get it cleaned up and rid it of some of the factory leftovers.

I am no sheetmetal guy, but learning. I am also teaching myself how to TIG weld with zero instructions, so pardon a few of my ****ty looking TIG joints. They are getting better.

Nice work Sean!! I love that you incorporated a support for the brake booster into the strut tower brace.

Are you going to tape off and keep the OEM labels on the radiator support when you repaint it? #Please

The problem is the Brakes wont clear the wheels and I dont want to get it together just to take it back apart. I do have to say that you make me thing twice about that =) Would be so fun to take to cars and coffee running and driving looking like this on the outside but engine swap completed.

Thanks man, its amazing the difference it makes in pedal firmness and brake feel. Its the little things that most people will never notice that I enjoy spending obscene amounts of time on.

Unfortunately I just couldnt keep them, one of them got burned up in metal work and I am too OCD to keep the big ass tag, but I do have a plan for it somewhere else on the car, so it will be back.

Thanks man, most new cars I see are all plastic though

Managed to get all of the bodywork done on that front panel and shoot it with some high build, then sand, sand sand....and more sanding. Stuff is awesome though. Super Build 4:1.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...pswwuajpsw.jpg

Looking a little like Dexter in the shop =)

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psahoej90x.jpg

Then this happened..

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psaervebqs.jpg

All caused by a flat tire on the air compressor. Had no idea that it would kill the old girl to be honest. Note to self, they are very sensitive to being level. Took out Crank and Rod. Got a good 10+ years out of my $500.00 compressor and this little guy has cranked out some work.

Pat had the idea of trying some colors out on the strut bar. I shot half of it in rattle can Almond which is shockingly close to the engine bay paint and the other half Rustoleom Oil Rubbed Bronze. I love the color and finish of it, but it just seems like an afterthought with all of the Black and Silver going on in there already. I am going to shoot it Black afterall.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psxhugilad.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...ps9pypnzri.jpg

I had a little time on Sunday to tinker and got the battery in the final place, built a plate for the battery mount to attach it to the car, got the starter in and built all of the positive, negative and alternator leads for the car, just need to sort out the actual battery terminals, the ones I wanted are no longer available.

Intake parts finally showed up last night so I got busy fitting all of that together. Came together really well in my opinion.

I still have to install and weld up the bung, will be running LS7 card style MAF.

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psih6ohrwl.jpg

http://i1133.photobucket.com/albums/...psxl4pxxt9.jpg

I am very new to the TIG game, but pretty happy with how this turned out, it will be powdercoated so not polished or anything. Something to be said about learning a new skill, I love learning new things.

Should have upper rad panel back from Painter today or tomorrow, fans and shroud should be here tomorrow, gotta pick up upper and lower radiator stuff to get that on the old turd too.

Progress is horribly slow with how much I am working and traveling. I need to take a week off and bust out some big stuff.

Sean

hackster 06-18-2018 08:27 AM

Finally had a break in the work schedule to get something done on the car. Ran around a little bit on friday and picked up some parts, you would be amazed the difference in parts places between "Big City" Portland and Eugene. Nothing here is open on the weekends for parts like nuts and bolts, fittings or anything like that. There is one good parts place in town M-F and they are hot rod stuff only. I am realizing how huge having Baxters within 10 minutes of my old place was in completing these projects in such a quick manner. 90% of the parts I have to mail order and wait.

So rounded up some parts, picked up the painted upper radiator panel from Metalworks and got to work early afternoon on Friday.

Managed to get the fans mounted up to the radiator, rubber isolators installed and the radiator trimmed to fit. Its nice and snug in there. Also installed the weather pack connector and got the upper and lower radiator hoses figured out. They were pretty easy but I did end up doing a 30 degree swivel style for the water pump to get things lined up better.

Figured out the intercooler setup and built a nice little bracket to hold the reservoir behind the strut, out of harms way and up high.

With that mounted up I got to work on more plumbing. I had to figure out how to mount the heat exchanger, keep the factory hood latch and the upper radiator panel support piece, it was a tight fit.

This is the factory Volvo piece, before it got chopped up.

Starting to get the hang with the TIG torch...

So I built a tray for the bottom of the heat exchanger to sit in, its got rubber on the bottom, sides and back so its not metal on metal anywhere, this holds it in position and should keep the bottom of it well protected.

I had to section out the front support and add a couple of tabs to it to attach so it can all be removed and installed from the car, this was more challenging that it sounds as the angles up front are a bitch to work around. Hood latch has plenty of room to function but its a bitch to get in and out as you can tell by the fins on the heat exchanger.......I was not very happy a few times on Saturday messing with this.

I got the intercooler pump mounted up to the inside of the framerail where it will have good feed from the tank and out to the heat exchanger and got to work figuring out the hoses and such for the system. I ditched all screw style hose clamps and opted for the factory style hose clamps. its a much cleaner installation.

Still working on a clamp/heat shield setup that I like for the heater/intercooler hoses.

Spent waaaay too much time on this over the weekend and its functional but I dont like it at all. I need to come up with a better solution but that isnt going to stop the build.

I got the MAF bung welded in, re ran that wiring onto the engine and shortened it up, got the intercooler pump wiring all terminated and buttoned up. The only thing remaining on the aftermarket side is the fans, I need to get some loom and get that wiring out to them and terminate for the weather pack connector. I also built a small support stand for the air filter to keep it from moving all over the place.

Then tore it all apart and loaded all the parts up for Powder Coat this week.

Battery terminals should be here this week sometime, powdercoat should be done by the end of the week. Coilovers should be here this week so I will be able to install and measure for wheel clearances.

I am going to call in some help for next weekend and see if we can make a big dent.

Very nice progress, I like the stock exterior look.

I only started TIG welding a few years ago and I find myself using that process much more often than I do MIG if the parts will be seen. MIG works really well for mock up or quick stuff though.

What did you use for the heat exchanger reservoir? Do you have a part number for it? That just might fit my LSA swapped Impala.

I’m not available next weekend....😉

It’s looking really good, as usual. I’m pretty interested to see the brake upgrade so if you could pick up the pace a bit, that’d be great.

They both have their places. Big chassis work I would never consider Tig, it would take far too long. Detailed stuff like this though its nice and its clean. I have found myself using it more and more on this project.

I ordered the entire LSA from Lance Draeger from one of the facebook pages. He has been amazing when it comes to the swap and a wealth of information. It is an edelbrock tank, but Ill be damned if I can find one online. If you need info on it hit him up. Awesome guy.

Bummer, you are always welcome at my place, we have lots of room to house you when you are freed up.

Sorry, you know the 12 to 15 hour work days don't leave much time for shop time anymore. Brakes are super easy, you just bolt the **** on and hook up some hoses. I am probably going to go with the 8.8 in the rear so Ill have the rear brackets and rotors available shortly.

Dropped all the crap off at the powdercoaters yesterday, should have it back at the end of the week. Most 20% gloss black, the intake tube and upper strut bracket are light textured black. Hope it looks good.
