Camaro X

I want to thank Mark for letting Jody, Jeff, Brent and I stop by his house and check out Camaro X in person this weekend. It's fantastic and everything I expected it to be. I have a ton of pics and video of it that I'll get online in the next few days.

Scott...I didn't get a chance to say goodbye at the Pfaff Design party but I just wanted to say it was a pleasure to finally meet you and Jody and Brent. I hope Woodward met your expectations and you can make it out again next year. :)

awr68 08-20-2006 08:39 PM

Thanks Scott!! I've been waiting weeks to see the wheels...the car looks GREAT and I look forward to seeing the rest of the pics!!

Pfaff's was rockin, that's for sure! It was great to finally get to meet you as well.

WDC was a blast. I can see where this might become an annual event.

Steve68 08-21-2006 08:02 AM

Tony-

It was great to finally meet you in person. It's funny we all build these friendships on line and then to finally meet the people in person is great. I believe WDC be a annual thing for sure. Having Jeff chauffeur us around being our personal tour guide really made the trip also.

As far as Marks car. Pics do it no justice. It is so understated. So simple and to the point. Typical Stielow workmanship. Well thought out and excecuted perfectly.

To Scott or Jody,
How was the ride in the X? Can you guys give us an explaination?

The X is sitting just right!

XcYZ 08-21-2006 11:34 AM

The ride is something that I was very interested in since it has the quadra-link rear suspension and DSE coilover/control arm setup in the front. However, Mark is running Bilstein shocks that he's had custom valved, and I'm not sure how the dynamics of those compare to the Koni shocks that come with the DSE kit. Mark also opted for 175 lb/in rear springs with a rear sway bar.

We only drove a small 5 or 6 mile loop so it's hard to get a real feel for it, especially with the horrendous Michigan roads. There were a lot of (what I would call) square edge bumps. We didn't take any corners, it was primarily a cruise with some WOT action.

I have a lot more time in the Mule and that thing rides awesome. It's sorted out, has a firm and tight ride that wasn't harsh. It's very balanced. It would be interesting to have Mark compare the two, Mule vs. Camaro X.

Derek69SS 08-21-2006 11:43 AM

I must say I really like Steilow's build style... they all seem to have a nice stance and a clean look with tasteful wheels. He's one of the few well-known builders that doesn't try to go "over the top" with the looks, and keeps function over form

Rybar 08-21-2006 11:49 AM

Hats off to Mark, I love it :hail: As I have with all of Mark's builds. He does top notch work and his taste is perfect in his builds. I can't wait to see the performance of the LS7.

Can't wait to see what this one can do :D . Have always loved Mark's builds :D .

That is a nice ride.

Do any one know when there going to be a full feature in Hot Rod mag about the car?

XcYZ 08-21-2006 05:37 PM

Ok, here are a couple of short videos. Nothing spectacular, but you'll get a good idea how bitchin the stance is and how it sounds.

More pics coming soon.

I'm curious on how long the build time was?

BC69 08-21-2006 06:35 PM

WOW! Those videos were cool, I am normally not a fan of digit gauges, but I liked that! Loved the blacked out wheels!! Jealous!

Thanks
Tim

I believe Mark told me it was about one year. A lot of time gets used up on the body/paint.

Scott,
Great vids!

Another amazing Mark Stielow build

What needs to be done to the front sub-frame to get these bilstein shocks to fit? Is this information that can be shared? :_paranoid

Datsbad 08-21-2006 08:35 PM

COOL CAR !!
I love it , white was my other color I was going to use. Everyone said NO WHITE IS TO PLAIN !!! Boy where they wrong.

But damn everyone has black wheels now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

fatlife 08-21-2006 08:42 PM

looks really nice in that second video, the previous pictures really didn't do it justice. Like I said before looks like a car that can actually be used so for that I give it a

awr68 08-21-2006 09:04 PM

I love the Stielow built cars and how they all are just enough different to take on their own identity. You can see how he tries different things with each build...I like that!! I'm a less is more kinda guy so the clean look of his cars just does it for me!!

Great job Mark...you are by far my favorite builder!!

I agree, Thats why I stayed simple on mine! I like to simple look , no major body mods , just enough to set it apart but not all smoothed over . Got to keep the classic lines. Some people get out of touch with this aspect when doing a complete car .

I absolutely cant stand a car with smoothed door handles, no mirrors(all Foose cars) , no locks , flush glass, shaved drip rails , etc...... you get the point. I am referring to stock bodied Muscle, there are some exceptions in my book depending on the car . But hey what do I know, This is just my opinion !

awr68 08-21-2006 09:37 PM

Jason, Fuel is one of my favorites as well, and if I had $99k more in the bank it would be mine!! Got any work around the house that needs done!?! :D

I think the hardest part of customizing a car is knowing how to pay respect to the car for what it is and not loose the lines and feel of the car that got us interested in the body style in the first place....it way too easy to go to far!!! Right now I'm doing some changes to my dash, but I dont think I'm loosing the factory look (too much)...this takes crazy planning!!

Stuart Adams 08-21-2006 09:38 PM

Cool car. Like the color. Mark did you dyno the motor, or do any internal engine changes.

Thanks

Streetking 08-21-2006 09:46 PM

Sweet car! I really like the white with the blk rims.

I'm so disappointed in you.... You didn't take any detail shots at all. :P

I'm afraid to ask what that big block in the garage goes into though.

Damn True 08-22-2006 01:32 AM

Simplicity perfectly excecuted.

Tough to beat.

Steve68 08-22-2006 06:33 AM

Anybody got a ideas on the mufflers????

What was done to the motor, ie cam specs??

trapin 08-22-2006 06:48 AM

He left the motor stock.

Payton King 08-22-2006 08:17 AM

I have a few questions

Did he use a stock harness for the LS7. If so, did the race pak intergrate with the stock harness?

what are the 3 ports for on the right side of the dash? and finanlly what is the digital gauge in the lower center of the dash that is red and what are the ports for next to it.

Any insight would help

I believe he used the MEFI4 computer with a custom harness. That is popular in the marine engines and more of a universal setup, plus he had data on tuning to start with from engineers at his work. The harness was likely custom, but not positive.

The digital gauge is an a/f meter, and the two round ports are 12V taps for a laptop or other accessory (I believe). The three ports on the right of the dash look like the a/c controller if I remember correctly; they're knobs not holes.

Jody

Payton King 08-22-2006 08:45 AM

Thanks Jody!

Did you like the race pak set up?

rwhite692 08-22-2006 09:00 AM

It really has a very sanitary, unemotional, "clinical" feel to it. The blacked-out tail panel looks nice, really sets the rear of car off well and I like the wheels. I'm not too keen on the black painted headlight surrounds, but that's about the only criticism I have...An endura bumper up front would be a big improvement over the painted steel one, IMHO. Great looking car, Mark!

The big block is for Red Witch. That car has been on the back burner while getting this car together. He plans on getting back on it soon...

I asked Mark this exact question. He said he used a computer from UMI and it came with it's own harness which connects to the racepak nicely. He may have cusomtized some, but I'm not sure. I do know that it looks really cool inside the car while at idle.

Mike
