horse power rating on stock LT1
does anybody know the HP of an LT1, and max HP it can handle stock before hurting something.
|
N/A or forced industion? I used to run a 8# blower on my 94 LT1 making 415 rwhp and never blew it up, but I'd say that was alot for the stock bottom end. Weakest link were the stock pistons which would blow up with too much boost or N20, also opti's were a weak point. The 95+ had a vented unit which was supposed to be a better design.
93-95 F-body LT1's were 275 hp 96-97 F-body LT1's were 285 hp 96-97 Ram Air/SS LT1's were 305 hp 92-96 Vette LT1's were 300 hp 96 LT4's were 330 hp lots of info on: www.camaroz28.com |

I woudn't twin turbo the stock LT1 bottom end, it won't last very long, unless it's running low boost (6 psi) You can get good power from it NA if you install a good set of heads, cam and run a coil per cyl. setup like the LS1. Plus you'll need a good tune.
|
You don't need the coil per cylinder stuff,The new MSD opti solved all the opti problems,A stock LT1 bottemend is good to about 450/ 475 hp.There good engines,I have stroked Lt1 in my 94 Z and it makes good power.

Also visit www.impalassforum.com, they have lots of good info on getting the LT1's reliable in big, heavy cars.

Lt4
I think the LT1 can handle close to 500 hp. I know the crank and piston rods are rated for 500 hp. You can buy an LT4 kit that comes with cam, head, and intake for about$2500. It is said to put out about 425 hp. Thought about going that way myself, but I also have a 383 that is ready to go with about the same hp.

putting a twin turbo LT1 probably wouldn't be worth the 10-12K+ price tag if you just want to cruise and look good, a stock LT1 would take care of that just fine, good little motor

Having built a couple hundred LT1/LS1 engines I can give you some advice here. The LT1 packages today that we are producing make roughly 430rwhp in 383ci N/A form. To put a blower or nitrous on it to hit 600rwhp is pretty easy, but I think defeats the purpose of the project and not worth the investment into an engine that was given to you. At least as far as I understand things. IF you wanted a turbo/blower you could just build a forged 355 short block and leave top half stock with some upgraded valve train goodies and you'd easily make 500rwhp.
The stock components are weak and are a crap shoot plain and simple when you get over 350rwhp. They weren't designed for that level of abuse, and have been known to give way almost without warning. I compare it to 10 bolt rear ends, some folks have them last a few years with 500rwhp then some cat snaps his with 300rwhp. A good looking 355 or 383 with a nice cam and such on it would work out well. It would make some good power, have a nice idle note to it, and not set you back too much cabbage. Just my .02 Heres an image of an LT1 done up that looks pretty sharp in the engine bay. Them canton valve covers are nice lookin. http://victoryracingengines.com/gall...Gibbs/000_0463 |
Sure why not. LT1s are fuel injected and with twins you can have 400 rwhp on 6psi. After all you said you aren't really looking to race the car or dog it, so as long as the motor has a good safe tune then it should last at low boost.

Here are some numbers FWIW. ;)
My Impala has 177k miles on it and dyno'd (at the wheels) 286 rwhp 335 rwtq. It only has tri-y headers, cold air intake, underdrive pullies, and a tune for 92 octane. The valvetrain is all stock. That is it. Some friends have a similar setup with the GM Hot Cam and getting in the 320's. Another friend has a 383 CID with ported stock aluminum castings and a mild cam which is putting down 398 RWHP and is very driveable. The Impala's came with the iron head LT1 and a little less aggressive cam, so they were rated at 260hp (crank) by the factory. Like a lot of engines, some headwork and a decent cam will really wake these things up. It is ju$t a matter of how fa$t your ca$h i$. Randy |
I have a 96 lt1 high miles I drive hard all the time, race it evey mouth a few times at the track. It has a vortec blower and nos all stock other then that (injectors programing exhaust) puts down 480 rwhp and runs 11.90 at 120 full weight.Very imprest with the lt1 motor like i said im not easy on this car.
