Radar Detectors which and yeh or neh

Going on a road trip soon. Which i do in both of my "touring" machines from time to time. Both particular machines tend to cruise kinda well.

I'm doing research, couldn't find this in the search forum, kinda surprised it hasn't come up before or its' just a sensitive legal topic....
currently reading this from the p-car forum https://rennlist.com/forums/off-topi...etector-2.html

(BTW, i do keep my head on a swivel to coin a hockey phrase)

thoughts?.....

My opinion is they are not worth the hassle of false alarms & your (my) constant focus on it looking for every little blip or beep from it. Not to mention if the cops have LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology, you'll get no warning.
In some states, detectors are illegal. If they see your detector, they will confiscate it & give you a hefty ticket for it. And, the cops don't like them. They view them as a method to evade the law and will treat your stop accordingly, meaning you'll get no break. I have personally experienced that. Hell, I've even talked to people that got an additional ticket for obstructed vision because it was on the dash.
Many years ago I came out from a friends house to a smashed side window and a missing Passport on a very cold January night. My wife was not amused on the long drive home with no window, sitting in glass.

I seldom see them in use because of all of this.

My Camaro came with the latest (5-6 years ago) built in Escort 9500ci with built in laser jammers, front & rear jammers/detectors, GPS, blah blah blah. The operation manual is 27 pages. Talk about complicated...
I tried to play with it, but gave up. Scared the crap out of me when I'd drive by a Home Depot because of the front doors setting it off. I finally shop the damn thing off. If it wasn't such a complicated installation, I'd pull it out & sell it.
I find the "head on a swivel" is my best bet, but then again I don't often drive "like some of you"!

This is just my $.02. YMMV.

Have a great tour. I'm very jealous. I signed up for it for the last 2 years, but haven't made the cut.

I’ve had a V1 for 20 plus years, updated when needed. It has literally saved me a ticket every day I’ve driven, but I’m that 70 in town 85-90 interstate guy. Wouldn’t go to check the mail without it.

Been using them for years and they have paid for themselves many times over. Most highway patrols use KA band and the detectors pick them up very early. Used Valentines for years but now prefer the Escort 360 max ? It has directional arrows that tell you where the signal is coming from. It also uses gps. When it goes by the same false alarm like the Home Depot mentioned above it mutes it after it has stored the signal from the same location several times.

GregWeld 08-18-2018 05:50 PM

I have an older Valentine One -- probably 'cause Charley said that's what I needed....

They all work - they all make noise.... You get a FALSE sense of security from them... The cops have squelched their radars up so tight that they got your ass by the time the things go off these days. Unless you're in a place where -- like here -- the county sheriffs just run with radar all the time so you pick them up on these two lane roads... so they can be a good REMINDER to check your speed.

I use the cruise control -- best ticket preventer ever developed -- set it at 5 or 6 over and relax. The guy that just blazed by you... yeah -- you'll pass him a few miles. That happened CONSTANTLY in my semi !! LOL

GregWeld 08-18-2018 06:20 PM

I just stay behind Charley and let him get the tickets..... best radar detector ever.

Mayhem. NV. sr50.

Head on a swivel AND a; detector, i'll ditch it in those back country roads and just hide behind you guys. Heck, who am i kidding, Ed, Mark, Charlie, G, my car ain't that fast LOL....dam 1st gens.

WILWAXU 08-18-2018 09:16 PM

I use a Valentine One and the V1 driver app on my iphone. You get the range and arrows from the V1, and the app helps filter out false hits using GPS mapping.

V1 guy myself... I’ve had mine for five years and done one update. The update nearly costed as much as the unit itself so I’d look for one that updates for free or low cost. As more sensors are put into cars for self driving they can also throw false positives.

I’ve got the v1 hardwired into the cameo with taps into rear view mirrror for power.

K band is annoying! I wish I could just turn it off all together.

GregWeld 08-19-2018 09:12 AM

Rudy and I ran the entire Hall of Fame tour last year -- using WAZE app..... plug in your route - it's not only GPS but it tells you where the cops are - the problem -- you can't drive and watch the thing on your phone - so really only worked because HE drove and I watched.

SSLance 08-19-2018 02:09 PM

I think that's what all the 1Lap guys used as well, WAZE...

That and those that got tickets would post where they got them so the rest could slow down there. :D

Its what i've heard. I'm planning on make it as discreet as possible, and its more or less just an insurance device.
Keep persistant with applying, and plenty of pics. They like new people coming in. Even though i was on the first, second, and fourth, i was on an "well review your application" status....

Did somebody local do it? i'd like to hardwire it since it wont come out (most likely)

I'll be using that as well. This year i have a buddy (tech savvy) coming so we can both drive/watch

clill 08-19-2018 05:58 PM

I’ll sell you a V1 for 150.00 and put that 150.00 toward another Escort.

glassman 08-19-2018 05:59 PM

Duley noted. LOL

shelteredV 08-19-2018 06:47 PM

I have a K-40 in my V with optional laser modules and it works pretty well, although I got pinched for 128 in a 55 last year because unknownst to me the freakin' laser shifter module wasn't working properly... That didn't turn out so well. Long story short, it is working properly now, I don't race unless I'm in Mexico, and it is deadly accurate.
I have a V1 in my truck and it drives me nuts with the falseys. I have an older Passport 9500 in another ride and it is by far the best unit I've ever had. I would put one in my new ride but they are damned expensive 3K+-
The bottom line is that they have saved me so many times that they have not only paid for themselves, but saved my license too. I don't drive 200 miles a day any more, so it's not that big a deal, but I do have a tendency to drive a bit over the posted limit so I do like the safety blanket. Waze isn't as accurate as it used to be either.

I just did it myself and I can help you once you figure out what model you want.

GregWeld 08-20-2018 07:05 AM

In my S63 AMG - I spent $1000's on a hardwired Laser jammer - front and rear - and of course radar - also front and rear.....

I got TWO tickets in one day - on one road trip. I tried for the trifecta of a ticket in each state I traveled thru but failed.

Haven't used a radar detector in five years --- haven't had a ticket in five years.

Dayum!!! the trifecta, its been eluding us all, in more waze than one. Head on a swivel=paranoia in my case....but, being an adrenaline junkie, what the heck!

clill 08-25-2018 06:47 AM

I should add that I got a ticket a couple years ago on the Goodguys tour going across Nevada. My Valentine was on but it blasts so many false alarms I just tuned it out. I'm sure someone has that pic from the Goodguys Gazette of me and the state trooper out in the desert.

I stand corrected.
What I was recalling was the illegality of laser jammers, not detectors.

This from the Google...
About the specific radar detector laws, there are ten states which have state laws banning laser jammers: Texas, Utah, Virginia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Minnesota, California, Illinois, Colorado and Tennessee. Radar detectors are actually legal in those states excluding Virginia.

Laser is regulated by the FDA!
