Project "Memory Maker" 1968 Camaro

Well... With the 55 in for paint the wife talked me into pulling out the 68 Camaro and make a family project out of it and get it running. So my oldest and I picked it up and brought it home. She ain't the purdiest thang, but she is solid. All original paint, minus the addition of the SS hood and smooth deck lid (which are both orig in their own right) which my buddy, who I bought it from, put on. He also had some rust repairs done around the back window, hence the primer. First time she has seen daylight in 9 years since I bought it on 2009. It has been off the road since 1984. This part of the project will be to simply get it running and driving. A few years ago our resident Curtis Osgood, aka Spiffav8, parted out his 67 Camaro as he was going full pro touring treatment. So I bought everything from bumper to bumper underneath which consisted of worked over 454 LS-6 (Old school) 5 speed TKO, 3.42 12 bolt posi, full hotchkis suspension including springs, shocks and sway bars, Lee steering box, disc brakes, etc... All of which ran exceptional in his car. The plan is to swap all of that into this. Interior is actually really nice. All factory deluxe and will just need a good cleaning for now. Looking forward to working on this together. Teach the kids the ins and outs of cars. Once the 55 is done the plan will be to go completely through it and make it a real nice car. In the meantime though we're gonna have some fun with it and make some memories!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3ba7f57cf7.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...dd4709eb3d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a6dd7756de.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e31df4a844.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3444f46b97.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...67eb807ab5.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...510a6a8519.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1e8ebccbd8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0573afea18.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6fd39d9850.jpg

Well... James and I have been spending the past few nights working on the Camaro. I honestly don't know who is having more fun..... Just having such a good time working side by side with this kid. We have a great game plan and so far been executing it as planned. So far we've ripped out the old exhaust and the fuel tank.. Tonight we wrapped up tearing the front end down... Will be ripping the old frame, motor and trans out this weekend... And with a little luck be sliding the new (old) one under it very soon..... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...35e5edab9c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...52215c6408.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...645e4df5da.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a34bf57d31.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c0f7e590d6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...2148e4f834.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...0fa658309d.jpg

Love the car! Everyone should have a "spare" 68 RS laying around:lol: Happy for guys that you get to make memories and pass along valuable skills...be sure take lots of pics of you guys working together. Some of the best posts on here are of people with their cars from "the old days" especially when they still have the same car! Good luck, have fun and keep the updates coming!

Great idea, Brent. Enjoy the time you spend with James and good luck on the project.

Lol!! Yeah... I literally had this car fall in my lap 9 years ago... Was not looking for one but had plans one day to build a clone (with a few upgrades) to my first car I ever had. (pics below) The one that got away that I wish I never sold back in 1997... But it helped me buy first house and start a family... So no regrets.. The plan was to wait until the 55 was done. My boys are 13 & 11, and reality is the 55 is roughly 18-24 months out. By that time who knows if the boys will want to... So the wife talked me into getting it running. So here we are, with the wife's endorsement!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...beff5d16ef.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...ad8a18b073.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...7427d79790.jpg

James and I had a very productive weekend. Pressured washed the entire car top and bottom. Yanked out the rear suspension and rolled out the old subframe, motor and trans. The underside of this car is so clean. All original paint and no undercoating. A shame to cover it up but decided to shoot the whole underside and protect it for another 50 years. Made a road trip Saturday to see Jody who graciously stored all my junk for longer than I care to admit. Picked it all up and brought it home. Now it's time to get it all ready to slide it under. Going to take it all apart and give everything a fresh coat of paint, polish up the hardware and put it back together. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...63f3204dfc.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...fac5889b94.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...62d8a7aa66.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...862a6511b3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c1c7759c25.jpg

I’m jealous. I tried to get my 10 yr old daughter to help me with my car, but no dice!
You’re gonna give your son memories and skills that will last a lifetime!
Good luck

Well.... Christmas came early for the Camaro!! What turned out to be just leave it as is and just drive it and have some have fun went out the window... somewhat.... Imagine that... Like car guys have never heard or done that before...Lol!! My Painter heard about what James and I were up to and said... Man... We have to make that thing a little easier on the eyes... So we have decided to put a quickie paint job on it. Just scuff, seal and shoot - nothing crazy. It's all original paint and the body is in great shape. Was going to with the original color butternut yellow, but the kid ain't feeling it. So we may go a light charcoal Grey or?? We shall see.. Either way, since we decided to paint it we can't put old stuff on it, right? So we went shopping..... Decided to do a few upgrades along the way as well... DSE hideaway light Kit, Dakota Digital VHX gauges, Retrosound stereo, Sniper EFI, and almost everything on the outside new...... Let the fun begin..... Love that kids smile!!! He is excited!!! https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...99bf612c3d.jpg

Show your son Jackass, Brent. Butternut looks great with good accent colors! Regardless, I'm glad this is going well for the both of you. Good luck!

Well, we got the underside wrapped up. Sanded off the surface rust, scuffed the rest with scotchbrite pads and wiped it all down with acetone. Then after that sprayed the underside with bedliner material. Hopefully this weekend get the rear suspension back together. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...8a518d8366.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...713a8cdd75.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...91462f00e7.jpg

What a great project for you guys, very cool. What did you guys use for the bedliner spray? It came out really nice.

slimjim 12-20-2018 07:13 AM

How much trouble was it to spray on your back? A rotisserie won't fit in my garage, (and adds a considerable expense) so I was considering doing this also.

Thanks! It's been a good time working side by side with this kid. The undercoating I used is made is bought through Finish master. Here is the link. It comes in Aerosol cans which makes it nice. Very durable and paintable. If I remember it was only like $15.00 a can and I used 4 cans to get this done. I plan on using on the back side of the fenders and trunk as well. I was told that SEM makes this for them and they market it.

It was a little work and the back and neck felt it a little afterwards - but not bad at all.

Ricochet 12-20-2018 08:51 AM

Here is a pic of what I bought. Great stuff. Easy to use, covers well and extremely durable. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...4250fab7c1.jpg

I suck at updates!! Lol!! But we have been still plugging away on it. Underside is all done, firewall, frame and accessories painted. Motor and trans cleaned up, painted and back in. Motor and trans had very little miles.. So just a clean up was all that was needed. Brakelines, fuel tank, fuel lines, booster. And master all done... Need to get the exhaust in it, get it on the ground and get it prepped for paint. By far the best thing in this is doing this with my son. He has lit up more than I have ever seen. #projectmemorymaker Attachment 70028Attachment 70029Attachment 70030Attachment 70031Attachment 70032Attachment 70033Attachment 70034Attachment 70035

Well... Once again lagging on the updates but we have been making some serious progress. I'll be making quite a few posts to get up to speed. This post reflects the underside. Fuel tank, fuel and brake lines, sub frame connectors, and exhaust are all done. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...dd7e04463c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...5f7424bef3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...626b8e999f.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...719e2e6644.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...8247131554.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...f7cd626ec6.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...68ecabdad4.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...84a03f1657.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...90ce9161b0.jpg
