1978 Blazer

1 Attachment(s)
Starting a new project. The goal is a very reliable vehicle for Goodguys Hall of Fame Tour.

I found a nice 2wd Blazer with good patina and little to no rust. It looked like some one found it and threw a hillbilly slam job on it and some wheels.

My plan is to raise it a bit and install a 2018 Tahoe L83 (5.3L) and 6 speed in it. I found one on EBay with 3 miles on it from a train derailment.

I purchased the following off that totaled truck: engine, trans, ecm, wiring harness, radiator, fans, induction, fuel pump and controller, under hood fuse block, wiring harnesses, exhaust and evaporation system.

It should run like a 2018 Tahoe.

Laying out the harnesses

Modifying the new 31 gallon tank to accept the Tahoe fuel pump and fuel tank level sensor

Awesome! What kind of chassis are you thinking?

(also, thats not a Camaro...thats a funny looking Camaro...is that a Camaro station wagon...) :lmao:

Stielow 03-28-2019 07:22 AM

Mostly stock chassis with some Ridetech stuff on it. I’m attempting to keep it simple.

The truck drives good.

Had a chance to buy a K5 Blazer years ago...still kicking myself on why I didn't and the price was right too. :bang::bang:

This is going to be awesome!

WILWAXU 03-28-2019 08:55 AM

Great project!

I have Ridetech's StreetGrip setup in my 1990 Silverado, it drives and rides great.

Did anyone else reading this chuckle just a bit and get excited about what this project morphs into? :D

Good luck with the build Mark, can't wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for sharing it with us...

Wonder if Charlie is the market for a Blazer someday... Can’t wait to see what you do with it.

It all fits fairly well. No cutting required so far.

Fix the hillbilly job lowering job & let it be?
Ride Tech C/O conversion kit??
No Limit Wide Ride/Fat Bar swap???
DSE X GEN 595????

Choices, choices....

shelteredV 03-28-2019 02:26 PM

Maybe a simple IRS?

jeff71 03-28-2019 03:08 PM

Gonna have AC, cruise, ABS? Looks like the factory oil pan cleared the crossmember and trans tunnel required no mods. Mind if I ask where you found a 3 mike take out?

31 gallon tank? Nice. With a 600+ mile range, I imagine you’ll be the 1st one at all the HOF stops!

rustomatic 03-28-2019 06:26 PM

Sweet--you win the left-field weird award! I feel safe in saying that many here will be happy to see a build within the realm of the average guy looking for cheap crap on eBay, like the L83. There is a lot of interest in seeing how little friction you can get away with in using that engine. I do wonder how the dimensions and weight differ from the LS--the Blazer platform definitely makes the sizing restrictions less of a thing . . .

WSSix 03-28-2019 06:50 PM

Sounds like a fun project. Good luck keeping it simple, Mark!

gofastwclass 03-28-2019 07:52 PM

Nice and simple. :D

Nice to see an out-of-the ordinary build here.

And looking forward to hearing how this thing rides and drives.

The start of the scope creep. We powder coated or painted all the sheet metal under the hood.

Anyone surprised?........nobody?

Fun to see different projects every once in a while. Especially when they are executed at a high level.

Nice project Mark

Awaiting - “the truck handles good and the L83 is a nice motor but the K5 is heavy so we bored out an LT block to a 427 and put the LT5 lid back on and added abs”... pic

(thinks... no way Greg is blowin by me in a ford pick up...)

It will be emissions legal. We kept the stock catalytic converters. The rest of the exhaust is left over stuff from Camaro projects.

Who makes that gas tank flange that you welded to the stock tank? I need it.

Btw, got 26.5 mpg from Reno to SLC to Kindig's shop at 80mph with 420rwhp, last tour.

Good luck, cheers, mike
