Dish or no dish...that is the question..
 

I stole these pictures from the bozewheels/danica patrick thread. I asked the same question in there, but thought it might merit its own thread.

I know its personal opinion, but how do you guys feel about offest on the rear wheels that results in the "dish" look? As I plan my rear-end, the type of wheel that I want (offset) is going to determine the length of my rear end - mainly to avoid spacers if I decide to go with the no-dish look.

What do you guys think? I've included a couple of pics. One of late model wheels on a 67 Mustang and 2 of Danicas car with and without dish.

My vote is for as much DISH as you can go. :yes:

Dish. I've had both, prefer the deeper dish look.

Dish, or at least no offset.

Dished just implys hard core performance. It's always struck a chord with me.
Which is why a testarossa always looked "weak" to me.

...And I'm not nuts about the look of front wheels with very little dish (a lot of positive offset) as is normally required when running the C5 stuff up front.

While I like the look of dished wheels, my practicality and engineering viewpoint takes priority. Think structural reasons.... have the spokes centered in the hoop. And up front for geometry reasons (scrub radius) you usually have hardly any dish at all with a well designed front suspension.

Function over looks IMO, although sometimes it's hard to give up the looks for better function.

Lips on the rims...you want them as large as you can...sorta like a woman's...think Angelina Jolie... :D

I like both styles. And like blown353, I feel that too much dish is a detriment. It also says "old school".

IMO I like the dish look. As with everything though within reason. The look of a 10" wheel doesn't look good with 8" of backspace (negative offset) as does a 10" wheel with 3" of positve offset. From the functional standpoint, I understand the wider the track the better handling. But you asked about what looks better in which you will get opinions all across the board.

Just my opinion, but if I wanted strictly function over looks, I wouldn't be pouring $$ into a first-gen Camaro, I'd buy an 06 Z06 and just be done with it. Wheels with a lot of positive offset on 60's body styles just don't do it for me. Again, just my preference.

The dish ones just look better.

I like the dish look, but when I was talking to Tyler last time I was in vegas he mentioned the aerodynamic advantages to having little to no dish. He kind of made me question what I thought about deep dished wheels. I think I will still go with a dish but nothing extreme. I think they just look better and I most likely wouldn't notice the difference.

Just look at the pictures, the Mustang looks lame and you can't tell at a glance if the rears are 7s or 12s. Up front is ok with minimal dish but in back you need dish on a musclecar! Leave the late model style wheels for the late model cars and a lot of the new RWD cars would even look better with a little dish.

So you are saying that if no one could see that a car had 12" wide rear wheels it would be "lame" to have them?

but I can understand that the dish look, looks good too. :yes: I do like a nice dish, however I think a huge dish on the rear with only a little dish on the front looks weird

Great thread... I was having the same debate in my head. I like the non dish wheels on modern cars but I do think the dish completes the look on a muscle car.

On that example, I definately prefer the dish. Maybe it's on a wheel to wheel basis?

I agree - and that car looks great. Just a slight difference between the front and rear - I likes.

I've been into FOX bodied mustangs for years and the typical goal there was 17x9s all the way around with 275-40-17s all the way around. The wheels were identical, front and rear. I actually like the wheels in these pics of my old 93..and I have considered using them on my 67. Too many choices..

A dish makes the tire look wider. Kind of alerts you as to what is underneath. We actually went to great pains, narrowing the frame, to get dish on the 12 wide front tires on Prodigy, otherwise as low as it is you would never notice all that tire.

Ya that looks alright but it would look better with more dish. That's what I'm saying....
