Opinion on grill
I have the car getting a new stereo and they say know one likes the grill
Making some changes for SEMA. Would like to know what u thought? http://www.competition-specialties.c...complete02.jpg http://www.competition-specialties.c...complete44.jpg http://www.competition-specialties.c...complete11.jpg |
I could go either way. I've never been a fan of billet grilles that cover the head lights. but then again, it looks good......
|
Same here, not a fan of the grille.
|
Try painting the grill black, more of a stock color and see what it looks like.
|
No offense, but I think it is butt-ugly. too much going on, looks like someone tried to hard to make the car look custom. Looks cluttered, non fuctional, and out of place. sorry :(
|
yea, no offense to who made it but imho it ruins the car.... it does the 3 things i hate most on grills, billet bars, covering the headlights, and most of all being flush mount.
The rest of the car is awesome though! |
no offense will be taking at all just want to here your thoughs.
I bet this is 1 of the most driven cars |
The grill makes me expect to hear electric razor noises as the car revs. :-\
Hardcoat that sucker black, sink her back about 1.5-2.5" Ya can probobly get away with covering the headlights, but doing so just evokes 'wierd' from all of us being so used to the stock RS stuff. |
Sorry but I don't like it at all. Even though they are pretty common I think a stock RS grill would look killer.
|
thought I'd post some pics with no grill

grill
Try cutting the grill to fit in between the two headlights inside of
the area that leads to the radiator Mike |
Paint the structure behind the grill black, and recess the grill. It will look more like a '68 grill with chrome strips. The worst part about it is the orange behind it.

something like this |
The entire car is painted Kandy Orange(tagarine)...inside out, top bottom, wheel wells engine bay core support, backs of fenders...there is no black on the entire care....black would look out of place. I know what you saying with the black behind there...it just wont work with this car.
|
but the original RS grille will look out of place in such a custom car.
if you change it.. you should modify the rs grille also.. perhaps spraying it black then paint the slats orange. or mound billet slats over orange. |
I live in Ma. and have seen it at the world of wheels and all I can say is WOW nice ride. The only thing me and three other people said their was it had a very bla grille for such an exteme ride.
|
I have seen your car and the detail and paint are killer. The grille is just too 80's looking. Maybe use the stock lamp bucket portin painted car color and keep your billet in the center only. The paint is such a stand out that you just do not need the custom grille.

We did a lot of metal work to the nose , not sure if a stock grill will fit anymore

looks great without the grill! metal work looks good. And I don't agree that it has to go cross country to make it a driver
|
The car has very extensive and beautiful work done to it. But personally the grill is the only thing that I like on the car.. I think it is the rest of the car that is too busy..
I like the idea of cutting the grill down to fit in the opening to the radiator; if you feel the need to change it. |

My car is also candy tangerine with stock grill, I was debating on making a billet grill. In the end, I probably would of powder coated it black.

This has my vote! Maybe with a billet SS emblem in the middle. Shiny Side Up! Bill '72 442 "Inamorata" |
comp-spec, if you paint the architecture behind the grille a titanium or silver color instead of body color it will help to wash out those features and not make it contrast as much. The titanium color is close to the aluminum color. Black is NOT an option.
|
I think it would look much better if everything behind it were painted satin black. I know you said there's nothing else on the car that's black, but IMHO, you should never be able to see anything behind the grille.
I would paint everything behind it black, and tint the headlights just a bit to make them less noticeable. I would also paint all of the vertical bars that hold the grille together black also. Doing all this would put the focus on the grille itself, and not all the stuff behind it. It would look pretty clean then. |
I have the pleasure of seeing this car at many events throughout the year since it's in my neck of the woods.
First, the car looks awesome, the craftsmanship is phenomenal. I know wild modification was the intent. However, I personally thought the grill has a clean but dated look to it. I actually like the shapes behind the grill better than the grill itself. (which I know you probably spent a ton of time on). I've never been a fan of body colored panels behind grills anyway. I always preferred satin black. I also think if you are keeping the grill, recess it about 2 inches and maybe leave the forward facing edges polished while the rest is satin black. ( think that was mentioned before). You weren't looking for this feedback but I also think a rectangular taillight (more stock) would fit the shape of the panel better. The Vette taillight mod is also a little dated, even if it's from a C5 Z06. Maybe do some recessed or flush rectangles and paint the tail panel satin black. (it may tie in the front/back) In the end, do what YOU want. It's a kickass car no matter what you do! :D |
I ran with Pete on Power Tour. That car hauls ass and takes a good beatin'. Maybe it's a show car, but he didn't treat it like one--rain or shine. Which is why he's UPDATING it.
Then again Pete, I never noticed all that incredible metal work behind the grille. It's time to stop hiding it. The center opening is small enough that you can take a factory 67/68 RS grille and cut it down to fit. Then build a shiny stainless or chromed perimeter frame for the new cut down grille like the surround used on a 69 RS grille. Paint the plastic grille whatever color looks right to you-titanium, charcoal, argent. Are you changing the wheels? I think the "flame" wheels are unnecessary given the paint job and body mods. Plus you can match the wheel center color to the grille color. |
grill
I have waited to respond because I cannot get over how cool the thing looks without the grill on. Man that was a ton of work and I think it is one of my favorite parts of the car.
I would leave all of that work exposed and place the grill at the very back of the opening....try it stainless, painted body color, whatever works, but please leave it exposed! |

First off all, Hat off's to you for driving such a killer car across the country!! I saw the car last year at SEMA & the workmanship is second to none. I personally did not care for the grill. It's not that it kills the car I just thin it would have looked better with something different. As said earlier, it kind of dates the car. The metal work behind the grill is beautiful. Is there a way to incooperate it to be shown & build something else? I know..ALOT of work. Some others have thrown out some good ideas. I also agree with Steve, the flamed wheels and steering wheel are a little much in my opinion. As you well know though everybody will be a critic & pick things apart. Etheir way, killer car. You guys do some nice work!!

Stock grille all the way.looks much better

Sorry I agree also! |
It would be neat to build an egg-crate style grille for the center opening with very "deep" rectangle cavities approximately 1.25" tall x 2.5" wide, painted silver/argent color...the extensive work behind the grille is really slick, I had never noticed it before!

The only way to make changes: See Kris Horton and have him do some 3 D renderings for your car with updated grilles.
I'm sure there is way toooooooo much money in this car already. It woulkd be good and wise money spent prior to making addtional changes that may or may not look correct on the car. What the heck do I know? My 2 cents. R.P. |
