Drifting
Must not have made the cut for Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.

That's a badass video :willy:
I was curious to know what people on this forum thought about drifting...it certainly is becoming popular. The problem for me is that it is completely about showmanship..there is no real competition nor assignment of metrics of any kind. I saw the drifting show at this year's Barrett Jackson in Scottsdale and it was fun to watch. |
All's it needs is the Dukes of Hazard theme song and a few "yeee haaaw"s
awesome... |

Good point, how does one "win" at drifting... It does look like fun... The only drifting I've done was unintentional.... heh heh. |
I did that stuff before it actually had a name!!

Me too. Growing up in a rural area, there was plenty of opportunities to drift and practice my Rally skills in my Dad's old F-150.
Hope he's not reading this. :_paranoid  |
We used to Drift in Dump Trucks, Golf Carts, Electra 225's, you name it. :D
|
I seen Drifting compared to figure skating, nuff said.

.... If in doubt..... add torque.

I m sorry but drifting to me is hardly a sport. Take a light weight high hp car, and go. All it is, is a controlled burnout. there was a kid in my class at school who thought he was a pro drifter in his P.O.S. nissan 240sx. He never stopped talking about it, my buddy and I as well as or instructors always gave him Sh!t about it.

Can't they drift around cones and then if you knock them over you lose points or something? Seems like some cones and timing would take the subjectivity out of it. I know nothing about drifting so if they already do this then sorry. :D

I grew up in the country Jim, we called it dirt tracking on the dirt road I lived on. Some of the things we did......reminds me of the ABB song where Gregg sings,"When I think about the old days, Lord it sends chills up and down my spine!" How we lived thru it, I just don't understand. I understand why those "old neighbors" hated me and my brother now.... |
Wouldn't a team of vintage musclecars setup to do this sort of thing really shake up the whole 'Drift' scene? The presence of the new GTO driven by Rhys Millen has been winning...but imagine a '65 GTO or '68 Road Runner clone out there doing the same.
The 'problem' is they really tear these cars up when they hit, and the easily-replaced body panels on the imports make them simple to fix. Surely, a domestic effort would have to stock replacement 'glass panels or something, and a legit crew to fix them respectably enough to look cool at all times. I think it'd work if it was done right. ~SP~ |
theres already a 69 camaro competing in "formula-d" but i dont think its doing all that well. Ideally those drift cars are supposed to be small and nimble to pull off some of the crazy stuff the really good drift drivers can do.
as far as it not being a sport.... i couldent disagree more. just because they arent going for fastest time specifically doesent mean it doesent require skill. i honestly think that the best drift drivers are some of the best drivers out there, period. and for the record, theres nothing wrong with a 240sx. heres a pic of my buddies old car: http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/7224/jerry2pm2.jpg may not be everyones taste, but i thought it was awesome |

good ol Thorax Embalmer.. hahahaha

I once saw a competition on TV that had a 70's El Camino competing. I think the dude driving called himself Bubba Drift!

I have been drifting for 30 years : up here we call it WINTER ........ I get enough of it for four months a year, I don't need anymore on TV .... cheezer |
I don't see why they just don't have racing in REVERSE. I mean looking over you sholder with your right arm on the seat balls to the wall racing. Now I'd pay to see that.

All I said is that he had a POS 240sx. I like the car and in fact almost bought one. Nothing wrong with it. All I'm saying is that anyone that can drive aggressively and be comfortable with it can do this. These guys get good at it with a little practice. Just like most of us, me and my buddy did this in fields just screwing around. Granted I'm sure those guys could kick my a$$ anyday if I were to get in it , but its not that hard to do what they do when you do it everyday or on regular occasion. If you heard this kid talk and the guys that followed him, yuo'd grow tired of hearing about it. He acted as if there are very few people who can do it. If you think its a sport go right ahead, theres nothing wrong with that. I just disagree plain and simple and I thik there are others who feel the same.
