I hate when people ask me this question. Not because it's a bad question, but because it pisses me off every time I think about it. My dad was helping me look for a car in early 1981. One car that we test drove was a 1976 Camaro with a 350 (priced at $3,200). The car was in like new condition, and was a total blast to drive (especially for a 17 year old). My dad talked me out of it on the premise that gas was going to cost $1.50 a gallon by 1982. I am not sure where he got that crap from. Anyway, I caved and bought a POS Buick Skyhawk with a V6 in it(also priced at $3,200). What's worse is that a guy I knew at school ended up buying the Camaro and driving it in front of me evry day. That is until he wrecked the sh*t out of it eight months later...

ZZ3ElCamino 11-16-2006 05:14 PM

This was my first car. My dad and I built it as a father/son project and I still own it today. I am currently in the middle of converting it to a mild pro-touring car.

76 Camaro. Blue with white interior. It was a nice car. Then I had this idea that it needed a little more power...

jonny51 11-16-2006 05:49 PM

76 400 4speed TA.

Back in 1982 my first car was a 1966 Ford Fairlane. I sure wish I had that car now.

first car

I had three first cars at fifteen I had given to me a 1968 delta 88 455 possi burner, 1974 buick century 350, 1978 ford elite 351. Dad said no to the delta and the ford had three dead cylinders so I ended up with the century put a set of keystone classics a holley carb and a glass pack. Also 18 cans gloss black krylon paint it was lots of fun. The first nice car that I got was my 1966 skylark convert and still have it today that was over 20 years ago

71Nova 11-16-2006 06:22 PM

My forst car was a 77Nova that I got from my great grandma. It was originally a 6 cyl car. I rebuilt my first engine for that car. It was a 305 out of a chevy van. I learned a lot with that car but am never going back to the gut less 305.

My first car I bought in 1984, it was a 67 Chevy two it had a big block, 12 bolt 4:88's its a wonder I didn't kill myself at 16 when I bought it....I paid $3,500.00 for it and sold a year later for $6,000.00

will69camaro 11-16-2006 08:48 PM

My first car is my 69 i'm still modding today...Not that it was all that long ago. I got the car when i was 13 for my 13th bday (we'd been looking for a 69 for quite some time). That was back in 97. Since then i've painted it and put in a 355 4spd to replace the 307 3spd, and it currently has a LT1/T56. It's soon to go back to the body shop and get a new motor.

Keith's car is very cool. My first car was a 65 Mustang, 289 and 4 speed. Lots of good memories, and it really seemed fast to me.

Ah, the good old days! :D

My first two cars

I just found this picture last week-end while going through some stuff. My first TWO cars in the same shot.

In the background is the 1977 Type LT 305 auto that I bought from the insurance proceeds from being a passenger in a violent car crash .....

The other is my first new car that I ordered from the dealership in 1984. I was already into Pro-Touring even then : I had to wait five months for GM to build me one with a 5-speed, four wheel discs and the 3.73 gears along with roll up windows........ I made the mistake of selling it when I got married. It had a Dana 44 complete rear from GM Performance and a 350 with Dart heads when I sold it.

Best memory : I happened to drive by a Chevy dealership one day when a then brand new (plastic on the seats) IROC with the 350 drove out with a slaesman and a prospective client, headed for the industrail park next door. I could not resist following. As they say, the look on the face of that salesman when a 4 year old, plain looking carb car smoked him repeatedly, was priceless.

'69 Chevelle SS396... I bought it for $1000 when I was 12, in 1994 with no engine. I've still never driven it. I've had about 3 different engines I planned on putting in it so far, but haven't done any work on it, as I've been pre-occupied with the '69 Malibu I bought when I was 15.

Musclerodz 11-16-2006 10:50 PM

'86 VW Golf  totaled it 8 months later, first hot rod was a '90 IROC with 350, no extras, never lost a race. I would prefer to have my uncle's first car, a new '66 Chevelle, 396, 4 speed. Or my mom's new '68 Camaro, 327, loaded with options.

race-rodz 11-16-2006 11:37 PM

i actually started out with a 66 chevy shortwide that i put on a shortened 76 3/4 ton 4x4 chassis, had a 383/th400/205 and 4:56's and it ran 16's the one and only time i was talked into drag racing it. the 4x4 was my only form of transportation, but i also had a 63 nova project goin on, it was mini-tubbed, mustang 2 ifs, and a full cage....it got sold as a roller to pay for a set of 40" boggers and bigger lift for the 4x4.

i shoulda kept the nova, but underage drinking and gettin stuck in mud holes tryin to impress chicks was the main past time at that point in my life....... actually...... other than the underage drinkin...my past time is still prettymuch the same

69 camaro COPO 427 4 speed

Ok....I am obviously kidding. I was just thinking about the guys who always tell me about the cars they "use" to have and all the rarity it had. Do people hear this much!??!
My first vehicle, 89 chevy LWB 3/4 ton. with 300K + miles. It was one of my dads business vehicles. Wasn't too bad, I was proud at 16.

Smack_talker 11-17-2006 07:34 AM

My first car was a 65 Mustang, 289, auto and was that funky green color. I restored that car all thru high school and sold it when I graduated and bought a brand new 82 Mustang GT, "The Boss is back"

Clockwork 11-17-2006 07:52 AM

Back in '87 to '90 I had a '75 Malibu, didn't know much about cars then, only that it had a 350 4 bbl. Probably a bit much for a 17 year old during winter, every panel had some sort of damage when I was done with it!

Still ran like a charm though the day it went to the scrapyard.

MaxHarvard 11-17-2006 07:58 AM

Oh jeez... bad memories!

My first car was a 1985 Honda civic, manual steering, no AC, manual transmission, brakes comepletely shot, bald cord showing tires and 180K on the odometer... it was a great "snow" car because if i hit a snow bank, it didnt matter :D

By about age 8, every kid around here with any ambition can make ~$6/hr for a couple months every spring helping the farmers pick up rocks in the fields (rocks can do some serious damage when run through a combine)

73 Laguna S3 white with maroon vinyl top

and stripe...swivel buckets. It was a hand me down that I drove for a year. Starting of my senior year of HS, Sept 81, my folks said they would help me get another car. We were on our way to pick up a 69 Camaro SS, 396/375, ralley green. On the way my parents said "would you rather have a corvette?"...at the time, YEA! Passed on the Camaro and got a 1978 Silver Anniv. L-82. Still wish I had gotten the Camaro. I did not find out how rare that car was until a few years later. Price for the Camaro was $1500 Price on the corvette was $8000. Working part-time making $3.35 an hour paid the $263.73 payment. Parents must have been pretty smart. I worked all of the time and weekends to make the payment...kept me out of trouble and girls pants. I made up for it in college.
