68 firebird

I have the 400 thats been rebuilt and now pushes 420 horses at the dyno and a richmond 5 speed transmission. As of now, I'm still trying to get my gaps right on my deck lid and hood. Thanks for the reply.

jonny51 02-05-2007 12:19 AM

Welcome to the site Lenie.Very nice bird keep us posted on the progress.

B Schein 02-05-2007 05:36 AM

Is that this Car http://www.detroitspeed.com/projectp...bolin_main.htm I remeber seeing it on ebay a few months ago.

XcYZ 02-05-2007 06:22 AM

Welcome aboard. Nice looking project. I'm going to have to check on the Raptor coating, I like the looks of that on the bottom of the car.

Lenie 02-05-2007 07:31 AM

Hi Brian, yes, that is the car on DSE's webpage. I bought it in Michigan and towed it back to the Seattle area. Being a first timer, it's alot more work than I had anticipated but I'm learning and enjoying it all as I go along.

B Schein 02-05-2007 08:02 AM

It looks like you are progressing nicely when it was on ebay it looked like all the bare metal on the car had surface rust on it. I wish I could have started with a car that was already at that point.

G-Body 02-05-2007 09:22 AM

Now where talking and notice its not another red Camaro............

cykotic 02-05-2007 09:37 AM

Love the coating. Is that the same as truck bed liner?

Cool stuff Lenie.
Those DSE pics were the ones that inspired me to do my 68.
I have not heard of the Raptor coating - is it a truck bedliner ? We used ceramic based Lizard Skin.
You have a great platform to work from. Nice ride !!

907rs 02-05-2007 10:45 AM

Welcome aboard, lenie. What color are you painting it? I thought that stance/wheel tire combo looked familiar.

Steve Firebird 02-05-2007 11:44 AM

From one 68 Firebird owner to an other welcome and NICE start on what will be a killer car. The hard work is worth it in the end.

Sales@Dutchboys 02-05-2007 01:39 PM

lol
Thats just too funny! My dad and I were talking about this car a couple days ago. We were wondering if it ever was finished or not. Remember seeing it at Kyle Old Old shop. Great car really love what you have done to it.

Roger Poirier 02-05-2007 02:53 PM

Welcome,

Good move on the underside of the car. Sometimes I which that I went that route. Simple, yet still clean. Keep up the good work.

VERY nice!

waynieZ 02-05-2007 04:28 PM

Walcome and Very nice looks like you doing well with it. how long have you had it? Have you picked you colors yet? Wayne

Lenie 02-05-2007 04:34 PM

Thanks for the replies, Jonny, that is one nice 69, I'm envious.
Bruce, raptor is similar to bed liner but lighter, not as heavy a texture, not as much rubber % wise and no harmful toxins. I put it on instead of painting it the same color as the car because I plan on doing a lot of driving and I'm hoping this makes for easy clean up.
Bill, as you all know color seems to be the most difficult choice to make and it changes weekly but I'm holding steady with wanting to give it the cuda/mustang look with flat(semi) black inserts on black paint? But who knows until I actually shoot it, hopefully by the end of May.

Reckley 02-06-2007 08:50 AM

I almost bought that car when it was in Michigan! The guy was selling almost every piece. Now I feel like I'm going to cry, :( I was so close.

You are a smarter man than me.

That thing looks great! Next time I guess I'll make sure to pull the trigger.

Keep us posted. Looks like it's really coming along nicely.

Mike

Speedster 02-06-2007 08:55 AM

Lenie -

Look at SW's Mustang, the feature car this month. He is the king of black cars and red cars and did the flat black/black treatment. Looks awesome.

tones2SS 02-06-2007 04:01 PM

Looking good so far!!
Keep us posted with the build!!

awr68 02-06-2007 09:06 PM

I looked at the pics of that car many times while doing all the heavy fab work on mine a couple years ago...simply nice!! I'm glad it went to a good home!!

Lenie 02-06-2007 11:58 PM

Deck lid question

Thanks for all the positive responses. Got a question. My Deck lid gaps continually get wider as you go towards the back of the car. I've been told a variety of solutions but would like the opinion from those who do it daily, you guys. So if you have a solution, please fill me in. Thanks.

youthpastor 02-10-2007 10:10 AM

Nice car- I'm in the Seattle area too, can't wait to see the car in person. I've been debating on mini-tubbing my '68 Camaro, most of the cars iv'e seen the rear wheels don't sit in the wheel wells right, but this car nailed the look dead on- awesome

Lenie 02-11-2007 10:24 PM

Thanks Chris, will be looking forward to meeting you when car is finished.

Lenie 02-18-2007 12:04 PM

Car name

I'm one of those guys who'd really like to give my car a name, but would like to make it appropriate and having a hard time doing so. Need your opinions. What do you think about FOWL PLAY?

A little "cutsie" and your car seems more bad-ass than that..

How about "Phoenix Rising"

After all, it is a FIREBIRD and that conotes the ancient myth of the Phoenix being reborn from the ashes. Lots of symbolism given that your car is being brought back from the "dead".

PHX RSNG as a license plate :)

Rybar 02-18-2007 12:21 PM

Lenie that is a pretty sweet Bird. Stance and wheels look great. I also like that liner undercoat.

71Nova 02-18-2007 12:30 PM

Welcome to the site. I like the way that raptor stuff looks in the trunk. Congrats on owning a WD subframe. Hard to come by now days.

Lenie 03-19-2007 09:55 PM

Soft seal or GM

Should I stick with GM cowl to hood seal and trunk seal or is soft seal as good or better quality (fit and all). Anyone have an opinion from experience.
Thanks:question:

Here is my experience. First installed GM hood seal. The back of hood stood up 1/2 higher then fender. They were ok in there day, however, they never fit properly. Then purhased soft seal. Musch better fit. Afterwards decided what the heck do I even need a seal for. Filled the holes and painted to match smoothed out firewall.

Nice looking bird. . .I hadn't seen this post before. . .I wish I was as far along on my project 'Bird (Tomahawk) as you are, but I'm still waiting to be able to ship mine from out of my Dad's garage out to me in Cali!!!
Thanks for sharing the Raptor stuff (and the ceramic Lizard Skin stuff from Speedster). . .I'm gonna have to check both of those out. . .I wanted to coat the underside/frame of the car with a more durable finish than just paint or powdercoat but I didn't want the extra wait of a truck bed liner. . .I will definitely be looking into both of these coatings! What company produces the Raptor coating. . .I tried a google search and found a company called Extremeion that has a Carbon Raptor coating, but I'm not sure if this is the same stuff that you used? Where did you get it applied at?

'Bird looks really good and good luck on the trunk deck gaps. . .not looking forward too much to that portion of my build when I get there.

Thanks for sharing!!!

Joel

Oh by the way check out my '67 Firebird 400 coupe. . .Project: Tomahawk in here.

That will be a cool car when finished. Great stance. I used the Raptor coating on the underneath of a '69 GTO me and my brother are building. Great stuff and easy to apply. My local paint supplier had a kit with the gun for a $100 bucks. Came with 4 quart bottles. Just add the activator to a bottle and screw it on the gun and spray. Looks nice too. Did the whole underneath with 3 quarts over a black epoxy primer. Thinking about doing the inside too.
atomicjoe23 It's made by U-Pol.

awr68 03-20-2007 09:12 PM

Looks good and it's got me thinking! :)

So how do you guys go about getting a good ground for wiring when using a coating like this? Is it soft enough to cut away where needed to get back down to metal for ground wires?

Thanks for the info!!

KPC67 03-20-2007 09:41 PM

I have been meaning to ask about Lizard Skin. Speedster, you said you have use it, how is it for heat and noise? we use gator guard on our cars at work, the durability for rocks and road wear seems to be great but i think it is noisy!

iwent and took a few pics of the valence and the car on the lift yesterday, i'll try to post them up tonight
