Stielow's LS7 install tech article

Here's is Mark's tech article on installing an LS7 into Camaro X. It's a great resource for those working on their own LS7 install.

Thanks Mark!

Thank you Mark for great feature and Scott for putting it up here!!

Ummgawa 02-19-2007 06:12 PM

Awesome Scott and thanks. Looks like alot of my old school stuff is going up for sale, and I'm going with an LS motor.

3 questions.

1. Would it be easier to notch the frame for the A/C pump clearance. (Just me-Mark does everything the way I would if he was my best buddy and lived two doors down and I had the same type fabricating skills he does.) And, along the same lines, can we get the balancer with the reversed pullies from ATI (put the part number in at The ATI site-nothing came up-maybe special order)and the bracket Mark made for the A/C, does he have a template?

2. Headers- Those are very nice items from ATS, but 2 grand with shipping is steep. What, in the opinion of the learned folk here, is a less expensive alternative. The LS-7 is sweet, but this would apply to any LS swap.

3. MEFI4 ECM by MSD..Looked every where and can't find it on MSD's web site. Any help on where to locate this part?

Thanks Mark for all the pix and instruction.

The article was a informative read. Thanks

I also tried to find this part on the msd website, but I came up with nothing...help

camcojb 02-21-2007 02:18 PM

I'm thinking that was a misprint, unless he was speaking of this unit which may be based on the GM unit.

The MEFI 4 is a GM computer as far as I know. You can get them from the dealer or online places like Scoggin-Dickey, etc.

Yup... its a true Delphi/GM MEFI-4... but its from UMI.

The InGenius software, the MEFI-4 and the cable throttle body are from UMI's product line. MSD may pick the line up and be putting their own color and name to it in the future... but it is still UMI's product.

Is the dry sump tank "stock" unit ? Can same piece bought from ATS or Petersen? How about mounting?

I would be intrested of that balanced with ac pulley too!!!

Great info!!

XcYZ 02-23-2007 06:33 AM

Peterson can make you any size tank you want in 6", 7" and 9" diameter, and they will weld on any size AN fittings that you want as well. For instance, one option for one of their 2 gallon tanks would be 7" diameter and 20" tall. So it's a matter of measuring what space you have and getting the packaging you want. ATS is a dealer for Peterson, so you may want to talk to Tyler about what he can do once you know what you need.

As for mounting, it uses straps that you can secure to the core support or where ever you want to mount it.

Hello Scott!

Thank you for clearing this. Since there are now few LS7 projects going on i will see if others will use same set up and the order one. I will needed it quite soon so we can build place for it. I will ask it from Tyler. I need to double check what AN fitting those adapters are wich mount to stock pan.

Isn't the MEFI-4 the GM "Marine" computer? If so I though the problem was it's lack of flexabily (limited functions, no OBD port, etc.)

XcYZ 02-24-2007 08:20 AM

I'm not sure, Steve. I went with the E38 ECM.

So did I. I almost went with Turn Key's harness since they were on of the few that supported 58x. Then I found (as I remember) that they used the MEFI4 unit and that it's capabilities were far less than the E38. It's not a huge deal if you don't care about those functions but I wanted the OBD port for easy diagnostics and tuning. I don't think the MEFI4 does anything with the trans either. I will have to research this a bit today.

I that Speartech?

XcYZ 02-24-2007 08:10 PM

Jim, the E38 is the factory ECM. Speartech offers a solution, very knowledgeable guy.

In my case yes, they simply have the best, most flexable, product and John is GREAT to work with.

Can anyone confirm whether the custom balancer and A/C pulley that ATI did for the LS7 would fit/work on an LS1?

thanks

Good Question.Better yet can us commoners get one also. Hey Mark, how about a heads up on the bracket that you used/fabricated to mount the A/C compressor. Great article.

Yes we commoners can get one, I've been talking with ATI, very helpful. They have sent me drawing for approval, I just need to confirm LS7 & LS1 use same balancer.

They don't share the same balancer.

Link not working right now :( .

cowboybob 04-18-2007 09:34 PM

Does anyone know why the link isn't working or when it will be? I read the magazine article regarding Mark's install but I wanted to read this tech article as well.

Thanks!

XcYZ 04-19-2007 07:07 AM

I took it down, it may be back up at a later date.

It's similar to the Hot Rod article, but with more images and references.

Please do and could you make those images copyable. Those are valuable reference for us who are trying to build similar projects.

XcYZ 04-19-2007 07:15 AM

We could start our own LS7 swap resource page/thread, there's a bunch of us doing it.

Steve Chryssos 05-04-2007 08:12 AM

Scott,
The article link no longer works. Can you please fix it.

XcYZ 05-04-2007 08:19 AM

I can't, not until I get permission.

va72mlibu 05-04-2007 10:53 AM

Any idea when that might be? That was several issues ago in the magazine.
