Would people be interested in this?

I went to Campbell Auto Restoration today to take a few pics of my car and was able to take a few shots of Steve's 69 SEMA camaro. They have done something that I would be very interested in, and in fact asked to have this done to my car. They have a guy who does mylar coatings to body panels, and was wondering what kind of market this might have. Here is a few pictures of the mylar pre cut film. It was cut for this car, but CAR is talking to the person who did it, to do my car and a few others as well. What this coating will do is prevent chips in the paint wherever applied. It's not really dent resistant, but it will save your paint under the wheel wells and wherever you might apply this too. They will have templates made for these cars as you can see on this one. What do you guys think?

I would be interested in putting that behind my rear tires to keep the rubber from building up on the paint. Any idea how long until it cracks, peels or fades ?

I don't think it does fade. The older stuff years ago would yellow, but this new stuff is a lot better. It should not peel if applied properly.

If it's the stuff I know it's made by 3M. They have it in sheets to cut for what you want or they have pre cut for newer makes of cars. Very nice stuff. I would ck in to it yourself as I know that some guys that are doing this stuff at new car dealers are just RIPPING pepole a new a$$! The stuff does NOT cost alot and goes on fairly easy if you take your time! I will try to get the part# for it.

You're right they do make this for some newer cars like BMW and Mercedes-Benz and i'm sure quite a few others. What the deal might be is that these will be pre cut for our cars. 67-69 You won't have to cut them, just install them. I don't know, to me personally it's worth whatever they charge to save a good paint job if you drive your car hard at all.

I have XPEL like this behind the wheels of my Camaro.. it's a GREAT idea.

I would really like a kit of this that works like CLEARTASTIC where it can be removed and reapplied for the front valences (track days).

I also had stuff like this on my WRX and it really saved the paint.

Great idea and I bet there is a huge market for kits for our cars.

I think its a pretty good idea. I'd definately think about it if i get mine re-sprayed.

Does he have anything to stop birds ****ting on freshly washed vehicles...i'd be all over that!!! :P

I'm sort of testing to see if anyone would be interested in templates of this design for the camaro. I asked permission from Tom over at CAR if I can post this too see what people thought and if people would order something like this. Yeah, I think it's a super idea as well. What's the stuff you have?

I have been wanting a kit of this type for my 1st gen for a while.

A buddy on mine had a Killer Custom Paint Job done and had the removable, invisible Bra. So far it has worked great. It's been on a couple of years now and he drives the snot out of his car.

He did the Power Tour last year among other fairly long drives.

I will definately put it on my car.

It's XPEL.. it a film that is applied much like window tint. It was developed by 3M to protect the leading edges of rotor blades on helicopters (military).

I think the person that makes these available in pre-cut kits for early musclecars would make a lot of sales.

The only thing I like better is the type that can be removed and reapplied. Would be nice to slap some on for track days and such.

you can buy in sheet form but pre-cut is SO much easier.. go for it!

Here's a picture.. mine goes up to the bottom of the side marker light.. if you look close you can see the edge.

i like this stuff for wheelwells on painted cars

bigtyme1 03-21-2007 05:25 PM

I'm in too. At the track we always use armor all for the day. It would be nice to have something more permanent

Streetking 03-22-2007 07:28 PM

Everyone of my cars have clear sheild on them. Behind the wheels and on my newer cars, complete front end, mirrors ect. I will not drive a car with out it..

bigtyme1 03-22-2007 07:34 PM

where do you get it?

mazspeed 03-22-2007 10:04 PM

Ok, now that most of you agree that this is something a lot of you might do. What would you pay if you could have it installed for you from pre cut pieces? Or pre cut peices shipped to you. No, this is not something I'm doing, but something the shop may have someone do if there is enough interest in pre cut pieces. Also if anyone already makes this stuff, speak up.

mazspeed 04-29-2007 01:21 PM

Ok, the guy how was doing this type of thing is really swapped right now, and it doesn't look like it's going to happen. Does anyone know where or who I can go to, to have this done on my car?

awr68 04-29-2007 06:34 PM

I think it would be cool to wrap my harness bar in it so the harnesses wouldn't wear the paint....thoughts?

How and where is this done?

MickyT 05-01-2007 11:17 PM

A 3M part number would be great or any more info on where to get this type of product. I would really like pre cut but if not available will make my own.

You can find a local dealer/installer in your area.

Just be sure to get references. Just like window tint there are bad dealers and good dealers

I keep asking Cleartastic to make a kit and they say they are working on it. Cleartastic is nice because it comes pre-cut and you can put it on and take it off at will.
